225/70/15 to 265/75/16 - regear?

quick question for the board. i have been a long time reader, but haven't yet posted. i tried searching but didn't come up with anything, hence my first post. forgive me if this has already been discussed.

i have a 2000 SR5 4Runner 3.4V6 4x4. the sticker on the door panel says that my correct tire size is 225/70/15, but when i bought the truck it had 265/70/16 deuler h/ts - which is what i thought were standard on the 3rd gen 4Runners. i recently bumped up the tires to destination a/ts 265/75/16.

my question is, does anyone know what my gear ratio likely is? i thought 4:10 was standard. and if indeed my truck did come factory with 225/70/15s, how big of a problem is it that i bumped up to 265/75/16s? do i HAVE to regear up to 4:33 or even 4:56 to not cause permanent damage to the tranny?

any help the board can provide would be much, much appreciated.

I would not worry about the step-up to 265/75/16's, I can't remember any member on here who has regeared following that jump. It is recommended for the jump to 285/75/16's, but most members don't regear after that either. It's not to the point of damaging your tranny.

IMO you wont damage your tranny based on a gear ratio being off. If anything you stay in lower gears longer, which are stronger.

If thats the correct sticker, seems really small, then you jumped from a 27 to a 31.5, that 4" is 12%.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. It will not damage your tranny in any way shape or form, and since thats only a few % bigger than what it had when you bought it you will not notice a difference. 265/70/16 is an OEM size for that year runner and those had 4.10's in them. I would worry more about your speedo being 12% off. If you have a GPS thats the best way to tell. Since 265/70/16 was a OEM option I bet you can buy a gear from toyota for your speedo sensor that will make you very close to acurate. If your speedo is accurate I would guess your rig got switched to 265/70/16 when it came off the boat by the dealer or toyota USA, hence the accurate speedo.. and then you have nothing to worry about.

Look and see what size your spare is, that should tell you what came size from the dealership...

I did!

OK, the reason I did it was to get the e-locker, not necessarily go from 4.10 to 4.30 because my tire size went from 265/70/16 to 265/75/16. But hey, why not kill two birds with one stone? I did feel the difference (but I also have 5 cogs). Like these guys said, it isn't really about preventing damage to the tranny in a case like this, it's more about restoring lost acceleration.

You will be just fine with 4.10's and that tire size.

I have 265/75/16's with aggressive tread on my '99. You don't have to re-gear or lift your 4runner to run these. Maybe for 285's but not sure. As far as the door panel goes mine says 225/70/16 but bought it from toyota with 255's. My buddies 4runner's panel says 225/70/15. I don't know why but I'm sure some one her does. You will probably notice a little power loss off the line but nothing too major. It's not like the 3rd gens are speed demons anyway! My 2cents

225/70/15 to 265/75/16 - regear?

awesome. thanks, guys! just debadged it this weekend. now trying to get all that excess glue off. you can see where the badges were slightly, but i think a couple washes/waxes and maybe some fading on those spots and the ride will be looking fine.

265/70's might have been factory on your vehicle (my door label also refers to 225s yet mine came with 265s). 265/75s would represent only a 1.6% change from a 265/70.

My door panel sticker says 225/70/15

I just put 265/70/16 BFG All-Terrian T/A's

The only time I ever noticed a diffrence is when I hit speeds around 70-75

It would take just a bit longer to switch into the next gear to go any faster...

(So I have a lead foot.....)

And even though the Runner may not be a speed demon

It does get up and go!!!

When I went from 265/70/R16 to 265/75/R16 I felt it in acceleration and my gas mileage dropped by about 1.5 miles per gallon (I have 1996 4Runner 3.4L 4x4 Auto. 4.10 rear).
It was about 3 years ago and may be situation has changed since and now you have more tires choices. However, back in that time if you would get 265/75 R16 you will get tire with a lot higher roll resistance than 265/70. And that what will affect your acceleration and gas mileage –not the size difference because it is negligible in that case.
It was not worth it to me so I went back to the original size.

I'm running 255/85/r16's with my stock 4.10 gears. Have been for about 15k miles. No problems as of yet. I do plan on regearing once I'm making actual money, jumping to 4.88's possibly 5.29's

I would not regear in your case, not worth the money.
