2000 4runner chirps like a bird.. (noise,help)
Seriously, that is the only way I know how to describe the noise.
It only makes the noise under deceleration. If I apply throttle it goes away. When I let off it comes back. I can duplicate the problem at low speeds 25-40mph. Not sure if i can hear it at high speeds because of wind noise.
Braking makes no difference. Still squeeks, chirps or whatever.
Sitting at idle, rev the engine, let the rpms come back down...does not duplicate the problem.
The vehicle MUST be moving to hear it. Could it posssibly be a transmission/driveshaft issue?
Vehicle is a 2000 4runner ltd. 4x4 3.4L
Thanks to anyone that can help. It's driving me nuts.

You might have to use a chassis microphone if you can't pinpoint what area the squeak is actually coming from.
If you know the general area then it would be of great help to us for diagnosis (front near engine, rear left wheelwell, etc).

yea, buy some belt dressing and spray them down.. see if your problem still exists. if it goes away, then check the belts and find the one that needs to be changed.

Hopefully mine is the same problem, i plan to do a mild lift within the next month.
At first I thought it was belts too but wouldn't it do it at idle with some revving? It only does it while moving and not under acelleration. If I speed up to 40mph, let off the gas and coast it starts chirping.
I just hope it's not driveline related. It doesn't sound detrimental at all...just really annoying.

Had the same problem and also thought it came from the engine bay. I had somebody ride with me and determined it was coming from the middle of the 4Runner.
The driveshaft/u-joint/etc. had to be lubed. Chirp gone after they were all lubed.
Hope this will help solve your problem.

I had chirps. 2 kinds. First I moved up the rummer stopper for the hood. It made a firmer hold on the hood. Stopped one chirp. Then I had my whole front end suspension changed and the second stopped. Sooo happy now.

I had chirping only during deceleration...usually when I was coasting down hills.
I tried everything...
It ended up being my u-joints and driveshafts. Make sure you have them all lubed . There is a ton
Check out www.4runners.org and look for the driveshaft lube writeup.

Had the same problem, would start "chirping" about 35mph and then drown out by wind noise around 50-55mph.
It ended up being a stripped bolt making a skid plate "chirp" on vibration. Stealer fixed it for free just today.
Hope this helps.

Just wanted to chime back in with an update. Turns out that I missed one of the zerks when I originally lubed the driveshafts/U-Joints. Found the missing zerk today and greased it up. I'm happy to report that the noise is gone! Amazing. Thanks for the link...i ended up printing that out and using the pictures as a guide to make sure I found all of the zerks.

I am relieved to find this thread, as I have the exact same symptoms. Has been a PITA trying to figure out. I am definately going down under and lubing the hell out of the driveshafts/U-joints.
The link to www.4runners.org appears to not have that topic anymore. Anyone point me in the right direction here?
I have located this write up, is the other one any better?

Thanks in advance.

for mine, I also had chirping, whenever I had my oil changed, I asked for a belt change(suprisingly) the mechanic told me my belts were in perfect shape even after have 30k miles on them. He put belt dressing(ask for ranch, hahaha), and it now sounds fine. I am not familiar with belt dressing, btu I'm guessing it was some sort of lube. Hope this helps!

Belt dressing was done all the time before the 100k tune up from toyota (northridge) this sound came just two months after the tune up. Just got a qoute to get all the Zerks regreased @ $78 will be dropping this off on Monday.
