Question 2 Button or 3 Button Keyless Remotes for 1998??

Hey all,

I just bought a 1998 4Runner Limited, but the dealer did not have any of the keyless remotes for it.

My problem is I've seen two types of factory remote key fobs, one has 2 buttons on the face and other has 3 (the third button being for rear window up/down control I think).

I called the dealership and they said the remote with FCC ID: HYQ1512Y on the back is the correct one.

So I bought one of the 3 buttons ones off of eBay for like $15. But I just read in another post that the 2 button remote is the correct one for a 1998. Did I buy the wrong remote? Can the 3 button remote still be used? When did they switch remote styles?? I have the "brain" unit under my seat and have seen the various posts on how to program it, but the remote hasn't shown up yet to test it out.

Thanks,

Heebz

It depends on what alarm you have.
If you have the RS3000, then it is the 2 button

If you have the RS3200, it is the 3 button. (usually in 1999+)

I don't think they offered a remote rear window until 1999...

Heebz,

I'm almost certain your Runner takes the two button remote. The brain is under the seat and you push the little green button to program it, right? If so, the three button remote will not work. I have a friend with a '98 and hers has the two button also. You might take the remote you get to a dealer and see if there are any techs there that would trade you. I work at a dealer (we're not all thieves) and personally have half a dozen of them in my tool box. Good luck!

Heebz,

My guess is that you have a RS3000 as very few late 98s came equipped with the RS3200. As the guys said, the 3000 has two buttons and the 3200 has three buttons.

Try ebay and make sure you buy a BLACK RS3000 remote and not the dark grey one. I know for a fact that the dark grey ones do not work. Ive received numerous emails to the same effect from my write up: http://www.4runners.org/articles/rs3000

Look for this on the back for the black 2 button remote.

From what i know Toyata did not install factory alarms untill 99. The remote/alarm for your Runner should be a TDS that is dealer installed. It has three buttons, is kind of bananna shapped, and saysTDS on it. The dealer sells them for about $60. I got a instuction manual from the dealer for free. one of the three buttons can be used to remote start the car or roll the back window down depending how it was hooked up. Here is a link when I first asked this question with a link to buy the remote https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...ghlight=remote .
The link in that thread is not direct anymore. put TDS in the search box and its the TDS 3 remote.

Bob is right on

I gotta agree with Bob on this one - it is likely an RS3000 system, requiring the BLACK 2-BUTTON remote. Mine is a 98 SR5, and I just bought one of these remotes off of e-bay - works like a charm. I don't know about the whole TDS vs. factory issue, but I do know that my '98 has the standard RS3000 system and uses a 2-button remote.

For what its worth....

Hey Guys ,I recently purchased a 98' limited like the author of the thread. I too did not get any keyless entry remote. I have been too busy to look into it. Did the 98' limited come with factory keyless (whether or not you had the factory alarm?). I do not have the Toyota security light on the dash so I assumed it didn't have the alarm. If it has keyless I want to go out and get a two button remote. Thanks!!!

Hey mixmaster,

If you find a place selling the BLACK 2-button remotes for a good price, will you post the seller's info on this forum. I've scoured eBay and all I've seen are the 3 button remotes (although I did see the GREY 2-button remote, but I understand that is NOT the one should looking for).

Thanks!!

Rs30000 vs. Rs32000 BRAIN UNITS

A follow up question....

Can anyone tell me how to identify the RS3000 "brain unit" versus the RS3200?? I've got a black box under my seat but I don't know which model (and hence, which remote to buy for it) it is. Are there any distinguishing marks, inputs, stamped letters, etc. on either one??

Thanks again everyone

Absolutely Heebz. If I find anything I will give you the website. I got a great deal on my 98' but I am ticked that I didn't get the remote. I was thinking of checking the local "reputable" dealership too.

It should have a keyless entry unit on it. If my dad's 96 SR5 has the keyless (but no alarm) they yours "should".

When I bought my 4Runner I had to tell them that I needed a remote. They were going to sell it to me without one!!

The remotes are the same for the keyless and the RS3000. I actually programmed my dad's remote to open mine (with the 2nd button).

Keyless Remote

Hey guys if you have a question on your vehicle send me your VIN. If it was sold in the Gulf States Region originally I can pull up every option on your vehicle including your keyless entry or vehicle intrusion package.

Window Sticker?

Clarify window sticker for me, are you wanting the sticker that goes on the vehicle with the VIN # on it?

No, the sales price sticker, that says how much my rig was new and how much the additional options are...

TOR. Check your PM, I have another unrelated question.

Thanks for the offer on the VIN gents!! I looked under the seat and I didn't have the RS3000/3200 box. I also talked to the dealer and they said that it was an option in 98 (even on the limited) I was like WTF?? Why would you buy a 33K rig without keyless?
