2.4L oil level question
Guys I changed the oil on my (new to me) 2004 2.4L Tacoma for the first time about 2,000 miles ago.
The manual called for 5.8 qts and thats what I added.
I checked the oil a few days ago before a long road trip. It was well above the full mark. I thought.... well I know I put in the right amount.
The oil had about 1,000 miles on it at that time and the road trip was about 1,000 miles in 1 day. I checked the oil today and it was still a good bit over the full mark.
So, drained some out and now its at the full mark.
Does anyone else experience this? Did I hurt anything by running with to much oil for the 2,000 miles? It appears it was about a quart or so to full.
This is the first vehicle I've had that the manual wasn't correct on the oil change capacity....
I let it drain really good to... does a lot of the old oil just not come out?

I used to work at a Toyota dealer and one of the mechanics doing oil changes wasn't paying attention once and filled up a Camry with oil twice! He put 11 quarts in it. The customer came back because it was smoking
If it gets to the point where it is blowing smoke out the exhaust it is bad because it can ruin the Cat and other sensors. Even if it is just a few quarts over full it will whip up air bubbles in the oil which is not good for your engine. Air in the oil can allow engine parts to touch. Their isn't much you can do about it now. Just don't do it again and the engine will probably see 200k miles no problem

The amount that you overfilled it did not cause damage. Nothing to worry about. I agree with you erring on the safe side and draining it down to the full mark.
Edit: Also, the amount specified in the owners manual is the amount you need to put in when you drain all the oil AND change the oil filter to a new one. If you don't change the filter, then it will of course be 1/4 - 1/3 of a quart overfilled (which is not ideal, but wouldn't cause damage).
