Question 1st Gen wiring help

I just got a 86 SR5 4runner. It has a the 22re, 5pd, auto hubs ,air conditioning, later gen combo cd player-tape deck.

Anyway my problem of the week is that I have a wiring problem in the dash. Sometimes the lights for the heater controls and the lights for the radio dont come on and the horn also sometimes doesnt work. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've found that trying to re-use any of the factory radio power and light wires can cause problems. PO installed a radio in my '85 and I changed it out, re-using his hacked up factory wires. I had all sorts of strange problems, like no brake lights at night (but fine in the day), etc. I re-wired the radio with new power and ground wires and all was fine. I think the main problem is the dimming lights, you can't wire that circuit into a common ground radio for example, because the radio light will be bypassing the dimming resistor to ground.

Mine barley works at all (wheel has to be turned to certain angle) but I know why its not working but cant figure how to fix it...(although I rarely use it at all, it would be handy sometimes...)
It could be the contact in the steering wheel, over time, the contact made up of a screw with a spring pushing it against a circular metal plate wears out (or the metal plate wears out). You can pop the the steering pillar covers off to see if the contacts are clean...

It's the horn contact. not much from dealer. It's a spring loaded contact that wears over time. You have to pull the steering wheel to replace. Put a dab of white lithium grease on it during reinstall to slow the wear.
