I saw what big a difference lockers make today while wheeling, and I am THOROUGHLY impressed. I am getting those before I get my lift. My question, what would be a good setup for my stock '86 4Runner rear end, and my front diff.? Remember, I still have the stock IFS up front. Thanks.

 

i assume u have manual hubs in the front. detroit are good lockers if they make em for yotas im not sure. go with an arb air locker.

 

I really like my LockRight in the rearend of my '85. It makes a huge difference, is about the cheapest to buy, is easy to install and I feel has great manners on all surfaces. I usually forget it's there on the street.

I chose it for the price and because you don't have to reset the gears afterwards, like a Detroit. No complaints whatsoever.

I've stayed away from a front locker because I don't have power steering and I also want to reduce the chances of breaking birfields. I find the locked rear/open front to be a great combination. With my 4:1 T-case gears and rear LockRight, I can get up about anything I want with a little brake squeezing on the tough stuff.

BEFORE you do lockers, decide on what your ultimate gearing will be and do it all in one step. If you're talking about lifts and likely bigger tires, there's a good chance that you'll want to change your gear ratios as well.

If you're having the work done, you'll not want to pay to have the diff torn apart twice.

Have a look at the Detroit E locker. This is the best of all worlds. It runs as a limited slip until it's engaged, flip a switch and you've got a fully spooled locker. If I'd not already gone ARBs front and rear, I'd be choosing that locker.

 

I got a Toyota OEM electric locker from a junkyard '97 4Runner for $300 and did some modification to my axle housing to make it fit in my '87.

I pretty much followed these instructions.

Many YotaTech members have done this or are doing it. Its pretty well documented so I didn't do my own writeup.

The posts are 20 years old, so yeah, not likely to still be working.

And they were certainly talking about a rear 3rd gen locker.

 

ITs too bad 4x4wire isnt around. SO MUCH info was on that site.
