Let this be a lesson to anyone reading. Never let someone drive a manual tranny if you have any doubt. Long story short, I let my friend's 21 year old son back my truck out of the driveway and pull it back in the garage. Were talking a 100 feet max. Now my clutch is toast. When he was done, he asked me what the smell was...turned out he didn't release the parking brake and rode the clutch the entire time.
Truck is an 01 Tacoma, 4x4 with a supercharger. Which brings me to my question, is this more or less difficult than replacing the timing belt?

 

Well......

On an '88 its a ten hour job. two driveshafts, Xfer & tranny dropped; then flywheel cut & pilot & throwout bearing, disk & pressure plate replaced. Then you get to put it all back in.

 

Probably no more difficult, just difficult in a different way.

From an access standpoint, I'd rather replace a clutch than a timing belt.

did you ask the guy if he could drive a stick?

+ the speedo cable, TC & shift lever, console/surround/rubber boot, 4x4 & reverse light switch disconnect.

pick up a transmission jack from harbor freight...i use mine a lot...

I had my trans out in less than 3 hrs using only 2 ratchet straps, a bottle jack and the basic tools I carry in my tool bag (sockets, ratchets, extensions, wrenches). Replacing a clutch isn't hard, just make sure the alignment tool slides in and out easily once you have the pressure plate torqued on.

 

This is step #1

 

If your truck's clutch went out in that little of distance, it was on it's way out anyway. There is no way he smoked a good clutch in your driveway.

Thanks for the advice...i agree that the clutch was probably weak to begin with. A local garage quoted $600.00 for clutch disc, pressure plate, throw-out bearing. Funny, NAPA sells the same kit for $300. The garage will only warrantee the work if they buy the parts...but they are ordering from the same NAPA. They double the price of parts so they can provide a "warantee". Needless to say, I decided to take the truck back. I will do it myself when the weather warms up in the spring. This is not a daily driver so I can nurse it along.

 

the clutch may be Glazed. But you will most likely need to have the fly wheel resurfaced. It will be a full day project by the time you pull it apart, get the flywheel resurfaced, throw it all back together.

I 'smoked' by clutch pulling a jeep out years ago. stinky smoke poured into and out of everywhere. i'm still using the same clutch in a different truck now. when it was pulled, it along with everything else was fine and well within spec. ymmv. its a centerforce if that matters

 

Don't forget to replace the rear main seal while you're in there.
