03 4runner vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee

So my dad's looking at either a new 4runner or a Jeep Grand Cherokee....I'm trying to get him to get the Runner, but I don't know too much about the new ones.

Any reasons why he should get the new 4runner over a Grand Cherokee would be appreciated...he said something about the Grand Cherokee being more solid (ie not coming apart at the bolts), but I don't know where he got that info from.

Thanks in advance!

I've got just the thing for you:

03 4Runner / JGC Comparison Page

Well, it's more spec comparison, really. But it might help a little.

I bought a 2000 JGC in December, it's a piece of crap. If the circumstances were different, I'd have gotten a third gen. As soon as I can swing it, I'm dumping the JGC and getting another Runner. My JGC has 47K miles and it sounds like it's got 150K.

Why don't try to get rid of it, while its still worth something?

4runner rides so much better
better warranty
toyota has a much better rep
4runner has the one of the highest resale value of all suv's
toyota seats are much more comfortable
more area in drivers area just overall more comfortable
jeeps have one of the worst resale values

I just bought a 4Runner w/ 150k miles on the clock. It's got another 150k in it. For a Toyota, that's just getting properly broken in. For a Jeep, 150k on the original engine is probably a record of some sort!

I read an article in Truck Trend when the JGC got the big redesign for it's current form and the V8 engine, the 4.7L in it or whatever size V8 is in the current JGC, has a life of 150k.

Trust me I reread the article over and over and even had others look at it and they all said the same thing, good for 150k is what their saying.

Yeah isn't it.

My doctor leases JGC for 36 months, truck has all the maintaince done to it and what a POS, at 30k with you eyes closed if he started it up and backed out of the parking lot you would swear the truck had no less than 200k and was over 10 years old, thats when I realized my 2000 Pathfinder at the time with the same mileage was like a new car.

My fathers knows the salesman at Jeep and he said, he does not know how people buy this ˟˟˟˟ the head tech says the crap don't hold up.

The V6 models are even worse, turn the AC off anytime you want power

It is scary how these things are made, did you know that Chrysler uses 3 different size pistons on the V6 blocks, their machines are so inaccurate that after the block is poured and drilled out and polished it then has to be rechecked and redrilled if the pistons don't fit in it, hence the 3 different size ones.

The AWD JGC have a loud ringing sound that is normal and can not be fixed, the AWD system designed for dry road use binds like it is 4lo.

The Jeeps have so many recalls on them it is nuts, one was the diffs front and rear where 2 different sizes causing the diffs to blow out.

My friends father bought a brand new 2002 V8 GJC, car had everything attached to the engine replaced then the engine was pulled all this before 5k, on Edmunds some guy bought another car cause when it rains his Jeeps will not start, heard that from more than a few people.

I seriously don't know how people drop 40k on these things, their nt the cheapest things out their, cheap but not cheap

Maybe when the JGC becomes a Mercedes ML in 2005 things will change but I still would not buy one.

I might qualify to answer this. I just traded in my JGC on an 03 4Runner several months ago. Best decision I ever made. Granted, mine was first model year (99), but it was crap. I liked it a lot at first, but my enthusiasm was short lived. Let me begin...on a 6 hour trip, it killed my back and legs no matter what position I put the seat in. It had 43k miles when I traded it, and I had...transmission problems, transfer case problems, power door lock problems, power window motor went south, AC worked until it froze up and poured water all over the passenger side floor, and sometimes she just didn't want to start. On the bright side, it went good in the snow.

So far, I absolutely LOVE the 4runner. IMO, there is NO comparison between it and the JGC. It's way smoother, feels way more solid, and much more refined. It doesn't hurt my back or legs on long trips. The V8 is great (although I can't compare that to the JGC as mine was a 4.0 I6). I could go on forever about how much I love this thing, and basically, I can't think of anything that I liked better about the Jeep. I am extremely satisfied, and don't regret my decision at all. My only regret is not buying a Toyota to begin with.

Apples and Oranges would be like a Murano and 4Runner, this is more like Watermellons and dried apricots
