I heard it from a teacher I had in tech school, he worked for Chrysler doing PR stuff, he said he saw all the stuff 1st hand in the factory and said it was kinda like watching monkeys jams square pegs into the circle holes.
I also had a friend who worked in a Jeep dealer and he was the head tech and when he pulled the heads you could notice the difference, not all them have it but alot do.
He told us tons of freaky stuff, did you know that 1 in 10 cars that come off the line don't start, did you know that the Chrysler minivans where coming off the line and would not shift, the answer to that problem was have the techs at the dealer swap the trannys out when the minvans come in.
Seriously I don't know how people buy the things or buy another one.

OK, OK, I admit it. I owned a JGC. It was a 97' that I bought in 98' with 23k miles. I was young and stupid. I couldn't resist the temptation to buy a truck then dump hundreds of dollars into it for just repairs. Who the hell offers a 30k warranty anyway. What is that?!
This should be the first alarm that something isnt right, when the warranty runs out before the motor is broken in. Ok, back to the repairs, where should I start. Axels, hubs, rotors, water pump, battery, anti-sway bar linkage, transmission, door hinges, speakers, and dare I mention how many different leaks the thing had. Everything that held oil leaked it, ALL THE TIME. All this and I haven't even mentioned the recalls that I didn't have to pay for. So where am I at now you ask, proudly driving a reliable, non-leaking 2000 runner that I bought a year ago with 60k on it and I haven't had to touch a thing. I just feel sorry for the next poor sap the bloodsucking salesman worms into buying the piece of garbage. It's not just Jeep though, look at Ford, Chevy, and Dodge. None of these companies can build a completely reliable vehicle outside of a diesel. Im a proud American that can say he is turning Japanese, I really think so. (sing with me).

I had a Grand Cherokee for about 6 months and I had problems also. Power windows breaking, coolant leak, 4x4 wouldn't engage when I needed it (left me stuck), and the engine was pretty whipped at about 40k. What a piece of ˟˟˟˟˟. I am so glad someone stole it before I had to put too much money into it. The cops said sometimes they export stolen 4x4's to places like Costa Rica. I wonder if it still runs...

My 2001 JGC is running great. The only major problem that I had was the calipers and rotors needed to be replaced at 40k, which I did myself.
It's almost completely stock and I kicked a 4runner's a$$ when I went wheeling. Don't get me wrong, i'm sure that there are many 4runners that can do better that the one that I went with. But the fact remains, I beat a lifted 4runner running bfg all-terrians with my stock GC. The quadra-drive is great. No complaints here.
As far as overall reliability and cost, I would stay with 4runner. But unfortunately since it is the GF's truck she is get what she wants. Hopefully I will be wearing the pants next time we go car shopping.
Please be gentle....
