03 4Runner AVG MPG Computer Display - Is it accurate?

Has anyone had the opportunity to test how accurate the computer information display is on the 03 4runner? Especially the average miles per gallon portion?

Thanks,
Dave

I doubt it, they never are. It's more of an eye candy thing.

Not Accurate

I have had my 2003 4Runner for 3 weeks and keep meticulous gas mileage figures.
Here in Canada the computer puts the mileage out as the number of litres per 100 kilometers.
On average I have found the computer is registering approx 15% low for the number of litres used per 100 kilometers. In U.S. terminology it says my gas mileage is approx 15% better than the actural mileage. I wish it was right, would love to get the mileage it says.
That is what I have found.
Anyone else figure out what % theirs is out?

The best solution I have is the built-in calculator in my cell phone.

Dave:

Good News! It'll make ya think you're getting better MPG that you're really getting! hehe

Bad News! Unfortunately, that computer is off by atleast 2-4 mpg so if you really need to know how many MPG you're getting, do the old fashion way by totaling the miles and then dividing by the # of gallons consumed.

Not only no, but hell no.

The "range" readings seem to be coming around though.

I liked to believe it was correct, but I went on a long trip this past weekend and kept track of the consumption. Mostly freeway driving and the computer said 17.3 MPG when in reality it was about 15 MPG. I drive it a bit hard too, love that V8. Maybe if I drove more gentle it would be more accurate.

Even if you drove it gently so that you don't hear the roar from your v8 it's still inaccurate

It's not accurate at all -- here is a thread that talks about it, too: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showth...=&threadid=273

Coming down from Mt Pinos in Los Padres I reset the computer and free-wheeled/braked for about 5 - 10 miles. The computer showed 99.9!

Kinda goofy!

no its way off but i did some calculations of my own on my trip last week. I was getting 20-21 miles per gallon. Which is pretty damn good i think.

Yeah. I log all my miles vs vendor etc, and find that Shell is no better than Arco in terms of range (some colleagues say their car goes 10 miles more on a Shell fill).

After doing just over 8000 miles with about 26 fill-ups I am averaging about 17-18mpg.

Still pretty good for the type of vehicle.
