ToyoTech559's 1988 4Runner Build-Up Thread

Nice! Thanks, once again, for doing all the research for me!!!! hahaha. Seriously, looks great, man... hope you LOVE the sounds. I want those up front and my Pioneer 4-way 6x9's in the back seat area.... But alas, I'm happy with the stock 4''rs up front and the 6x9's in boxes/moveable in the rear seat area on the floor, facing upward.... It sounds GREAT! But, I would like to have my amp and a removable sub in the rear(I don't need it on trips)..... Or just the 8"rs in the rear most panels.
Sorry, just that you got me thinking out loud again, bud! lol.

wasnt hard to install. on the 4runner you have to cut two tabs off and if you email arb they will send you pictures of what needs to come off. to install it helps to have a friend or two. i did it with a floor jack and my cousin. i only have a low pro floor jack because of my lowered cars but anyways i had to let all the air out of the front tire and i was able to it on. i do have a winch as well so the overall weight was around 150 to no more than 200lbs i think. the front end came down a little but i can crank the torsion a bit to level it back out
they are prototypes so you can get them yet haha

great i just went and smog my accord a few days ago. i would have gone to you. pm your place. i have several cars and could use a new place to smog all my cars lol
#250
will explain more later lol. a trick i used on my accord to fix an issue. gonna wait to see if it works before i explain more. should help out a few folks. while i was at it i been wanting to replace my PCV so i got that done. gonna take my plenum to work to clean out the caked up oil in the runners
#251
i had atleast 2mm of oil/carbon/sludge in the walls of the plenum. took a long screwdriver to it and scraped way a nice pile of it that build up inside the bottom of it. so i brake cleaned as much as i could and it just turned to mud lol. took it to work filled the entire thing up with degreaser (weaker than purple power) let it sit for an hour. helped alittle. next i used a heated pressure washer and steamed cleaned it for a while. it came out almost like new. wish i would have taken a before pix but in the pix you can not tell how thick it really was. hope i get some HP back haha

working on adjusting my valves as well. need to get 5 shims tomorrow.

Wow, great work!
I had a couple clogged ports in my plenum.... one of them the Steering port(that bigger one)... It was like an ice cream cone of carbon, sticking out the end into the plenum and COMPLETELY clogged! I pulled the ones that could be and completely reamed them out/Cleaned out the rest, and it made a big difference in power.
Best wishes on the rest, Toyo!

very common and almost on all cars. its best to have a induction service done every 15k. i do my own with a product call seafoam. i know i will be doing this service often now that its all cleaned lol
elocker got put on hold because i wanted to do this 1st lol. once this is done. ill be back to the locker

HIGH IDLE issue and sometimes idle would hunt/jump solution that worked for me with testing to determine if this applies to you. 3VZ V6 engine
so lately i have been having a hard time getting my runner to idle correctly. it would stay around 1100-1500 most of the time. cold start up it would high idle and slowly work its way down to 1000 which is the lowest it would go at operating temp. if i go for a drive it would slowly climb back up. since i have an auto the stall speed makes it so i dont notice it on the RPM gauge unless i put it in N or P. anyways i have been doing alot of testing and determine something. once its at operating temp and it idles down a little. i turn the runner off and let it sit for a few minutes. when an engine is stopped the temperature actually goes up before cooling off. now after a nice hot soak. i would start the runner back up and BAM 800RPM idle. again driving would bring this back up. this has led to me thinking that the coolant hoses must be a clogged causing the coolant not to flow thru fast enough to keep the IACV hot or that the IACV is weak. after removing the throttle body and checking the hoses i dont see any clogging so that leaves a weak IACV.
the plate i removed next to the TPS shows the the inner workings of the Idle Air Control Valve. it works very much like a t-stat and thanks to toyota i cant just replace it as its all part of the throttle body (which is discontinued at least per my vin) anyways the trick i did similar to what i did to my accord was to turn the ring with two slots using a screwdriver in till it stops. this will pretty much disable my IACV. now i could turn it in a few turns if i know for sure i have a weak IACV but with all that work i rather not lol. i pretty much loose my high idle during cold start up. the cold start injector still functions. will get more info later on weather i need to hold the throttle open a little (manually choke it) till the cold start injector turns off.

- fixed my high idle by disabling my IACV
- replaced my PCV (original one (metal) was still installed at 230k and still worked)
- adjusted my valves. three exhaust out of specs with one being really out (again 230k and not one valve adjust has been done) good job toyota
i also had two on the tighter side so i did those two as well.
- replaced valve cover gasket even tho it was done not even a year ago
same with the plenum gasket and throttle body gasket
- along the way i replaced any hoses that was no good such as one of the coolant hose to the throttle body. a few vacuum hoses as well.
- replaced the rubber intake tube that goes right to the throttle body ( i ripped mine) $100 for a small rubber tube
- replaced with a used working egr diaphragm valve thingy because i broke mine
- adjust/reset TPS
- cleaned out the best i could the entire intake plenum of carbon build up (was ALOT)
- reset timing to 10 used to be at 15. might change it back to like 13 tomorrow when i do an oil change
all this because of a stupid high idle issue lol i wanted fixed before i go up this sunday for some snow wheeling if weather permits. whew alot of typing thanks for reading.

Nice write up....... If I ever grab a 'steal' on a 3.0.... I'll bounce back to this, bookmark #395! lol. No kidding... I have to clean up my bookmark list, but I have MANY good ones. Time to organize, eh?
lol.
Again, nice write up on that, I'm sure it'll help many, Toyo
