Nahhhh, ...you can either rebuild the one you have, or just bite the bullet and buy one from Carsontoyota or something like that. One of those will give you like 40% off and it still comes straight from the dealer. However, there is a guy Rob is using for a GM alternator swap, plug right in model. Just visit Rob's thread(you'll see it in "chef's recent posts" or something like that. I think he posted the link. Personally, the stock stuff, most often, works SO WELL and for SO LONG...I just stick with OEM, but THERE ARE options, no doubt.

Just leave this on here for a couple days, ...it's the weekend, weak response action, ya know? hahaha. You'll get some good advice(which I know, sometimes, only makes it more confusing, hahaha). They make a 70amp one that goes right in ours. Ours are factory 60amp I believe. I don't run tons of stuff on mine and I have a spare from a yard for when I go on deep trail camping trips(nothing crazy, but often deeper water, etc., ya know?)

You might want a HighJack, too, and possibly a come-along, if you don't want to spend TONS of money on a wench, etc., right off the bat, hahaha. I've used my come-along(4000lb) PLENTY of times and it's done me well. nothing like a wench...but yeah, I just can't afford that front ARB...or wench, either! lol.

Out of curiosity, ....why are you upgrading the alternator?

 

How much do you think im looking at for a new OEM alternator? Ok and call me a newb but what is a HighJack and come-along? I think id just rather get a winch. And id upgrade the alternator for if i ever run anything that needed more power, speakers, compressor, winch, etc.

a come-a-long.....it's kinda a hand powered winch thing....we used them in the rescue business

swimmer, I ran an oem alternator (60 amp) from autozone with kc's, a stereo with a 600 watt amp and a winch no prob on my '86. they're like $85 bucks with a $50/core. I mean, if i tried to run all three at the same time, i might have run into probs, but with the kc's and the stereo on, or the kc's and the winch (only needed to do that once, lol) i never ran outta juice. good luck with whatever you decide, tho

No it wasn't an aisin, it was a no-name reman, and it ran the '86 for four years 'til I swapped it into the '88 last year when I junked the '86 body. It ran the '88 'til a short in the pigtail melted the harness to the plug input on the back and fried it. Had to replace both. But 60amp should be enough for most applictions, unless you plan to run a mobile garage out of your truck, lol. And I agree with ozzy, if you can get a denso, they're worth the little extra. Really tho, if the one you have works for now, just leave it, they're not particularly difficult to replace or rebuild. Just sayin....

Actually, I mention the Come-along, because they're a practical and VERY useful tool that you can OFTEN find on sale. A wench? SURE, GREAT, ....just remember, it's wise to build up your bumper, brackets, etc., accordingly, Brian. Once you get into Wench, ARB, etc., ...IT AINT CHEAP, haha. Plus, you're wanting to get on some trails, soon, right? Wellllllll, then get a come-along for about 60$ for a good one(30$ at Harbor Freight for a decent one, 4Ton).....or spend, what? ...6-900$ for a decent wench, 800$ for an ARB or WARN bumper, ....you get my point, haha. Just trying to save you some cash for now, Brian, lol. Remember, you can use those come-alongs for MANY different applications, including, as I do, for yanking BIG rocks out of my way on the trail, ....big logs,...... pulling myself out sideways in the snow as I have, FROM the side, without damaging my bumper, valance, fender, ..... Heck, I have an eyelet in mine that I can lock and so I've even used it to LOCK MY FRAME to the ground, via log, when heading out on 6mile hikes and all day 'LEAVING MY RIG IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE TREKS, ....WHERE I CAN'T SEE IT, .....AND TWEEKER THIEVES CAN' type things, hahaha. This kept said tweekers, once, from jacking up my truck and trying to steel my Outlaw 2's with 33's, brand new!

The HighLift? CRUCIAL in off road situations, ...and around 120$ for their better one. DO NOT get the Harbor Freight models, ....go with the HighLift Brand.

They're just REALLY good tools to have when out and about in the woods, etc., ya know?

Far as the alternator....See what I was saying, and how the general consensus is "Go OEM, ...they'll last a LONG TIME and give you all the power you need, unless you're running air compressors and a fridge!" lol.

Edit: I had a Kragen Alternator, which I believe uses NDenso Regulator and brushes, etc. .....which was 89$ and lifetime warranty, in my 86 Pick up with 4" lift and 33's, and it ran with no issue for 5 years and 120K miles... When I sold it, it was still working, fine. And, yet, I fully agree with "OZZY"..... since I know you're not worried about 60$ or so extra....just get the OEM. By the time you get into needing the Mean Green or something, 140amp....you'll be a few grand into this thing, ya know? I have used my Napa Alternators, with a Duralast Gold Battery, for pushing my radio hooked to my Laptop/amp/lights, to have "movie time" and then play music all night and NEVER once, yet, been stranded.

 

hey rynamite99, so do you have the original springs on the back? with the BJ's, and shackles you still have a little saggy butt......LOL

I was planning on doing the exact set up you got to the 2in body lift and was hopeing the shackle extra height it would fix the fatass......

 

I guess i'll just hit up AutoZone today and order up an alternator.

I work with this janitor his name is Benny, real nice guy.
Well turns out word got around that im good with cars, and other things with engines.
So i guess he had an atv that didnt work.
And he said its mine if i take it out of his garage.
Its a 2001 and it clicks but wont start (prob an easy fix).
AND he said if i fix his snowmobile he would sell that to me for like $100!
