space-junk's 1990 4Runner Build-Up Thread

I guess its about time that i made one of these for the my runner...

Specs:
1990 4Runner
Bought 2/22/07 for $2,300
223K Miles
3.0L 3VZ-E

When i bought her, i originally paid $2,700 for her, but the clutch let loose on her 5 miles from the guy's house, so i went back to him and he refunded me 400 bucks...

the day i brought her home...

she looked a little frumpy... but i was in love!

well, after getting her home from having the clutch replaced, i just drove the heck out of her... for a couple months, i was driving almost 1K miles a week in her towing trailers...
went to get smog certification for CA req's and failed because the cat was shot... so i went ahead and replaced that with a custom bent 2 1/2" exhaust, a cat from a 1/2ton chevy, and a magnaflow muffler...

not much happened between then and christmas 07... did a little backyard wheeling and drove over some parking curbs... yeehaw...
but i ended up getting my ProComp ProRunner light bar from santa... went ahead and purchased some lights to go along with it... 2 5.5" ProComp slimline lights and a set of kragens fog lamps... the lights are wired through my high beams which is very useful out in the middle of nowhere where i live...

pics of her all washed and waxed in March '08...

Decent flex for a bone stock 4runner with a saggy ass...

sadly tho, this is where i found out that time had sheared the passenger side lower link mount off the axle housing AND subsequently rubbed a hole into the rear brake line...
woooo... more money...

Ive seen that thing in person and your build thread is kind of out of date man. I did not see any mention of the 33's or the 4.88's.

Around October early october '08 i hadnt done much more to it... i had gone on a couple solo jaunts with 4wheeling, but between work and school, i didnt have a lot of time for wheeling...

unfortunately, around this time i started hearing a whining coming from the rear end... wanting to find out what was wrong, i went ahead and decided to change the rear dif fluid... i though it was low... didnt know it was THIS low...

All that came out...

it looked like black syrup... and smelled like burnt gear oil...

that rise on the plug is all metal shavings from the dif...

unfortunately, i didnt have enough money to replace the dif, so i just refilled it with some heavier weight oil to quiet down the noise... which worked... (for a while)

looking ahead to winter and knowing that the Yokohama Geolandar H/Ts while great on road, sucked in the mud, i decided to pull some tires and rims off my old '78 GMC and slap em on...

Before:

During:

Finished:

I absolutely loved that they sat about 1/2" outside the wheel wells and the fact that they were so much more capable offroad...

great mod and great tire... i would recommend them to anyone who loves to play in the mud...
the only downside is that i didnt know what the offset was on the rim, so at full lock it would rub on the front mud flaps and actually caused them to rip at the bolt... about 2 inches... not noticable to anyone but me...

mid october rolled around and i thought id do my first body mod...
well, actually, some punk kid with a pellet gun who was shooting at cars did the mod...

shot me in my passenger side door! luckily it didnt go thru the window which was rolled down AND im lucky because i caught them right as they were leaving and got their license plate...

pretty good size damage for a 22 caliber pellet gun...
after all was said and done and i got my estimates for $1200 bucks, the kid ended up paying me everything he had which was a thousand...
which was good, because i had other plans for that money...
so with a little bit of nail polish to prevent rusting, my body mod was complete...

another christmas present popped up... before christmas... Downey IFS Brace...
a little used, but still okay to use and with a little cleanup, it even looks respectable...

a little grinding and some priming...

then some paint...

think it looks pretty snazzy...

Christmas came and went, but fortunately it left me what i was hoping for...
OME 901HD springs...
probably my favorite mod thusfar...
ended up giving me a little over 4 inches of lift on the rear end... which is about 2 inches over factory...

absolutely fantastic! she rides a lot smoother now without feeling like your on a magic carpet ride... plus ive loaded the whole back of her up with oak wood, from the front seats all the way to the ceiling abd to the tail gate, and she was squatting about 3 inches... not bad for 200 bucks!

somewhere along the line the rear dif blew up... i believe around march '09...
a call to ZUK and a transfer of funds and he shipped me out a set of OEM 4.88 gears...
sorry i have no pics of the install, but i did it in a few hours on my driveway... i followed Matt116's writeup and everything went real smooth...

by far THE BEST mod that i have done... its amazing how much power i have gotten back after doing this... the 32's dont seem like much, but oh man, she felt like she was brand new skating on the 4.88s...

pics of the OEM 4.56s that went kablooie...

Shrapnel found in the bottom of my dif...

mid march i fot sick of looking at the chipped up paint on the grill...
so i went ahead and refurbished it... i think it looked good...
also added in some ebay "projector" H4 headlights... more like magnifying glass headlights, but wow, they work excellent! especially coupled with Sylvania Silverstar bulbs...
