It wont be a road queen, I have never had that intention for it. Im just trying to get rid of the rust before it gets too far gone. My dad also recently purchased an 86 singlecab that is going to need more work than this one by far. Its bed is nothing but holes. How come you aren't working on yours anymore?

What type of welder would you recommend getting for doing this bodywork?

I'm not working on mine because I can't afford much at the moment. Just driving it for a while. You'll pretty much need a MIG welder. Flux core will just burn holes everywhere. I have a 110V MIG welder by Lincoln Electric. There are much better options but if you're just getting started and doing it as a hobbyist it's perfectly decent.

ok, that's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure. Yeah I know the feeling. They aren't cheap to get right, especially when you keep running into issues with the transmission. That's what keeps putting me in the hole.

Yep. I've done all the small stuff the past few years. I started out just getting it reliable. I got the interior all cleaned up and fixed the air conditioning. I just redid the body so the only things I have left are pretty expensive. I want to SAS it, lock it front and rear, and install a winch bumper and winch. Lots of money on that short list so I'm just going to sit tight for a while.

I'd honestly just get a transmission out of the junkyard. Much cheaper. Just look for a truck with lower miles or one that was wrecked.

when I bought the truck it came with a spare transmission and a spare 22re out of a truck the guy parted out. This is the spare transmission the first one was shot when I got it, or close to it, because it wasn't three months and I had to put the second one in it. I still haven't messed with the spare 22re though

Well the 87 has been gone for some time but a buddy of mine called me two weeks ago and asked if I knew anybody looking for an old 4runner..... uh yeah.... me! He told me he wanted 1000$ for this 86 4runner. It’s a 22re automatic but I still couldn’t pass it up. Needless to say it needs a lot of work on the body side but the motor runs like a top. This one won’t be leaving as I now have a job where I have some money to undertake such things. It still won’t be a fast build but hey I’m just glad to be back in a 1st gen. It will save miles on my dd 08 tacoma

Good to see you back although I see by your Tacoma you never really left. The white one for $2500 was a smoking deal. I paid $2400 in 2010 and have replaced the clutch, head gasket, rear main seal. and timing chain kit. Maybe it was you I got the idea for a Walker exhaust from. Thanks. It was really cheap by going to the Walker catalog site and copying/pasting part numbers into Amazon. Never trust their parts search. I always have free shipping. I think all the gaskets, donuts, hangers, bolts and cat back ended up about $125. The fiberglass repairs I did in 2010-2012 are holding strong in 2019 and I had it painted in 2016.

My younger son drove it through high school and bought a 1st gen Tacoma last summer that is amazing. The hardtop has not been back on in over three years. I bought a new Tacoma in 2016 and enjoy it but it's too new to mess with.

Your new 1st gen is an amazing deal. Usually when I see farm tags there's a lot to do to get it to pass inspection. You can put antique plates on it though. Keep us updated. It's good to see there are still deals out there. I'm in VA too.

Nervo,
where at in va? Yeah I was kind of worried about the inspection part myself but actually all it needs is tires. Everything else works, and it has a brand new exhaust on it.... even if it is one of those cherry bombs. A little loud for my liking but I haven’t had it but three days. First order of business is some cheap 31s just to get it to pass inspection

Yeah we definitely do, but I have some work to do before I’d be ready for that... maybe a day trip to Corolla hang out on the 4x4 beach or something for one
