You know I do as well. However I got a buddy that bought a LC performance 22re and he's highly disappointed with it. It's really noisy no difference in power and LC has yet to bother. I for one have visually witnessed this. He also has well over 5,000 grand in just the engine. LC's not bothering because the engine wasn't installed by a lincensed professional. I don't know if he just got a bad potato or what. But it really sounds like a 30 year old engine.

I made a set of plates or mine and one of my students runners. Definitely a cleaner look. I didn't really notice any power difference.

Truck sounds great in the vid.

Yeah I don't believe block off plates do much for performance. They do increase the appearance alot tho. One good thing about block offs is it cuts down on the carbon buildup in the intake.

Update.

11:15AM Friday April 26 2013

Setting on side of interstate. BROKEN TIMING CHAIN.......... I have 1,633.4 miles on a brand new timing chain that failed.

Guess I'm back at step 2 again.

How tolerable are these engine. Will valves smack piston upon chain breakage. I shoved in the clutch almost immediately although I was running about 75-80 mph when it broke. So just curious if I have a junked engine or just need a new timing kit.

That stinks man. As far as it being an Interference engine, some say yes and some say no. I believe that there could be a possibility that the valves could smack the pistons under certain circumstances. But You might be ok. I would just pull the head an dsee whats going on and if any valves got hit. Then go from there.

Yeah I've cranked it over thinking I blew a fuse then I noticed it didn't sound right so I pulled cap off and noticed button wasn't turning. I did notice that my cam is almost perfect on TDC. I can't hear anything that sounds as if piston is in contact with something. So I'm hoping I just need a new timing kit. And gasket kit this really sucks. I took alot of time in assembling my engine only to tear it apart and do it again. Owell.

Update:

Got my truck fixed today. I tore it down and everything looked great except the plunger and bottom gear. The plunger was wore completely through the rubber bushing and the bottom gear was missing a couple teeth. I put a brand new timing kit in it today and it fired right up. Filled my fluids back up and drove it. It seems fine. There's no hesitation or any strange noises. Thank god no bent valves. I will take a couple pics of the old timing kit tomorrow to show you guys. Yet to this day I have no clue what caused this malfunction but its fixed now

Do remember that I have no tailpipes. So if your planning on tailpipes then the sound will be quiet abut different. I dunno if it would loose the throaty noise or not

Maybe I'll do something similarly to you but place the muffler back where spare tire would be, might be better if the exhaust has no restriction until the very end, I'll ask around.

I wouldn't really recommend that. These little R engines rely on back pressure. I'd keep the muffler close to the stock position

Ok, that does make sense, thank you. I'll go with my original plan, btw your throttle seems very smooth and responsive!

Yeah when I did this engine I had my intake and stuff steam cleaned by a friend. By the looks of the gunk that came out I'd say it should run pretty decent. I also did away with the EGR junk so I shouldn't get to much buildup like before. I'm also running Denso platinum plugs along with performance wires, cap, and button. The airbox a bed stuff is still factory however I have a k/n filter in there.

Once my frame is straightened I'm going to buy a new header, and maybe a really nice cam.

What benefit is taking the EGR off? How much are headers for these engines and are they really worth the money? I too have stock air box and k&n filter. I'm sure a cam would give it a nice lope, maye a ill more torque, from what I read these engines really don't see much gains, ill probably just keep engine stock except a snorkel intake and exhaust, I want to put my money into the rest of the truck, restoring it and upgrading suspension and other parts for articulation, comfort, and functionality.

There's several different headers out there. I've ran a header on all of mine. They really give a good torquey boost depending on header. I have a Tri Y header on my 87 and I love it. They range from 100 to 500.

Cams also give alot of power depending on cam. I'm wanting like a 268 crawler can or something in that range.

People may say that these engine don't give much power but I for one will disagree. I grew up around these 22r engines my whole life. As a teen a raced a 22r toyota celica on dirt tracks. I was pushing well over 200 HP on pump gas. If our engine is built right it can push some good ponies. Now I for one have never built one however my dad use to be really good. He didn't get around to teaching me his skills and telling me his secrets.

Flywheels also make a difference. Little things here and there can show alot of improvement. Feel free to ask me whatever you may. You can also google 22re mods and there's several listings that will pop up showing all sorts of things.

Mine may have aftermarket clutch/flywheel, it hits hard into gear, not sure though. Cam idea sounds cool, I'm anxious to see how you like it. And what about the EGR removal, what's the point?

X2 on the power gains. My 22re has a header and egt block off and feels pretty peppy considering its got some miles on it. The egr delete definitely made way of the carbon build up in the intakes.

When I first got my truck I was doing some simple maintenance and looked into the intake when the throttle body was off. And I couldn't believe how bad the carbon build up was in there. I had to scrub and soak it with engine degreaser then use a hotsy at 220degree just to get it semi decent.

I feel that with a new head, decent cam (engnbldr) , clean intakes, clean fuel injectors, etc.. These motors will run really well and have enough power to do what you want.

I'm where you're at finish. I'm trying to put money into the truck where I need it the most. Rebuilt engine, new springs, etc..

I really like the look of your truck man

Hey thanks for the comments.. Like I have said, mines a DD so building is slow lol....

EGR block off.......
Power gain - no nothing noticeable
Cleaner engine - yeah way cleaner
Pass smog - nope

Blocking off the EGR and other smog equipment doesn't really do much for performance. Although it really cleans up the engine bay and gets rid of in needed junk. Your EGR builds up alot of carbon deposits that go directly into the upper plenum. From there it gets really sticky when mixing with fuel. In return it builds up and restricts air and fuel flow resulting in loss of performance. I'd recommend it to anyone that doesn't require a smog test.

Hope that answered your question.

Thanks brother, and thanks for the info. Pace setter looks like a good header, as long as you paint it or have it coated. I'm gonna look at my intake tube tomorrow, I'll let you know how it looks, it does seem like the engine is being held back by something, maybe intake or exhaust possibly. BTW my uncle is gonna be welding on a nice custom bumper next weekend, can't wait to share some pics for you and others to see, it's a 2 1/2 or 3" round well pipe, he works in a welding shop and is gonna get all brackets and mounts for lights for free, also gonna mount some anchor points for towing. I can't wait. I'm gonna sand it down and paint it, any suggestion on an extremely durable paint, maybe bed liner paint (I like to run over small trees and bushes, lol)?
