Yeahhhhhhh, finallyyyyyy I can say something about this! ! ! Hahahahaa!

Wow, nice work on the mirrors!

My pleasure, JB! Excited to see this come together!

I wish I knew then what I know now, spilt milk, hindsight is 20/20. ... Yada yada yada, hahahaha. But, seriously, if I'd known then that I could put in 3RZ or 1UZ, I definitely would have. Fortunately, my little 22 RE runs like a raped ape compared to some, so I can't complain.... such is life and life is such, you know what I mean? I hope you really enjoy all the work you're putting into it, and I'm fairly positive that you will! Nice work!

Haha, I know, a little weird of me to keep something like this quiet for so long, but even though I had the axle back in April, I still wasn't 100% sure I'd do an SAS. I got the axle so cheap, and was kinda still debating Total Chaos, but decided that most of the places I'm applying for jobs I would get more out of an SAS than LT.

By the way Mark, you get my pm?

The higher rpm's would be nice to have but you would be going through a lot of rear ends. A stock 302 would be great in there still would break stuff... but to much power would be to tempting to do something dumb that you would have to replace later...

But the extra power will be nice and that way your foot does not have to be glued to the floor all the time. Just when you wanna break stuff with the v8.

Help

Hey Johnnyboy I got a 93 runner and thinking of putting in 3.4 like you did does everything line up and bolt up or is it a complete modification process I'm new to the Toyota life so I'm trying to learn

626, depends on the engine you have in there now. If you have the 3.0 v6, then the 3.4 is the same block, but if your 93 is a 22re, you'll have to source another trans or something and relocate the motor mounts. My best advice is do lots of research before you buy anything, and try as much as you can to get everything from 1 donor vehicle.
There's a whole section on here devoted to 3.4 swaps
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160/

Mine is detailed there
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...eknraj-161816/

And even though ORS, who I got my conversion harness made by, is out of business now, they still have a lot of information up on their site. Their instructions and a list of parts needed are probably the most important stuff they still have up.

My parts truck which I'll be grabbing the frame from is a 22re. I guess it opens engine choice for me.

I want to do a swap just don't know what yet. A 3.4 would be great. With the age are people doing newer engine swaps into 2nd and 1st gen yotas? What are the new engines and are they price comparable to a 3.4?

What do you like/dislike about your 3.4? Is it night and day to your old 3.0? Mine runs well so i really want to make a good choice.

Smokejumper, it depends on what aspect of performance you're referring to on whether it's a night and day difference. Acceleration, not so much. It's still a 4,000+ lb car with now 190 hp instead of 150. Holding speed up hills, though, that's a night and day difference. Acceleration could be a different story with a supercharger and headers, though.

If you want to swap, but don't know with what, you need to evaluate your goals. Do you need a torque monster? Better mileage? High rpm horsepower? Ultimate in reliability for backcountry exploring? Then set your mind and your budget towards it.

Well, in the cold here it took forever for the mirrors to dry, but here's the driver side

And now both

So the only chrome left now is the license plate area on the tailgate, the badges in the back, and the trim around the windshield. And the radio antenna, but I don't think I'll be painting that black.

PS, those mirrors were really nice with the chrome as well, but again you did a really good job, so I wouldn't say what a shame or anything like that, it's just odd to some part of my brain to paint over Chrome? Not odd as in I don't think it should be done , lol. Really looks great!

They definitely were, and the motors work perfect...found the switch doesn't, though. Guess the motors in my old mirrors are good still, too, but I have to remove the switch and hold it together real hard to get it to activate the mirrors. Might try and take it apart to clean/rebend contacts or see if it's just plain shot.

Take a look on 4 crawlers site for a window switch repair tutorial. I know this isn't a window switch, but some of it might apply and help you towards getting it cleaned up ?

Good thought, better than just pulling them apart and hoping no springs go flying!

Good advise.

I want power AND reliability. My 4Runner will end up being the epitome of compromise. With all that glass it will never really be a true rock crawler but will hold it's own with care. Still be nice on the highway etc as a great all around exploring and camping rig.

Awesome in mud bogs though, I LOVE mud.

Been following your build, too, and given your talking about taking your rig with you to Oz, maybe think about what's there as far as engines, too. Reliability can sometimes be determined by what parts are available, as well.
If the trip to Oz wasn't in the mix as far as considerations, with your goals, I would say 3.4, possibly supercharged, or 7mgte for decent low end torque and some high end turbo power, or 1uz. This is also considering power output not being so high that it compromises the reliability of the rest of the drivetrain.

I thought about too much power as well. The drivetrain was not designed with 400hp in mind.

My next move to Australia is in a few years. When I do go I expect I'll be there for at least a decade. When we have a family she will want to be near her mum....

Its so hot there.

Love the hood cut out to clear the 3.4, waaaay more bad arse than a body lift.

Get that solid axle in so I can see how you did it and copy! Haha!

Haha, just posted in your build Rattle. Mine may end up higher than yours, dunno, but I'm gonna try a progressive 3 leaf overload like the Deaver mini pack. Hopefully doesn't end up sky high, but a firm ride I can deal with, so hopefully I can get away with just a few inches uptravel.

Smoke, if you're gonna be there for 10 years, you better swap in something that's available there so maintenance parts don't end up costing you an arm and a leg. At least if you stick with a Toyota engine, some vsv's and relays and whatnot else that may be somewhat interchangeable so you can use stuff commonly available there.

Yeah I plan on using as much stock Toyota stuff as possible. I'm not a big fan of replacing the heart of a yota with something domestic. I'm a shameless Toyota fanboi.

Living in Australia for 5 years will do that. I've seen what kind of workhorse they can be in harsh terrain. They get beat on down there. You don't see many on big tires though. The vast majority have tires less than 33's. Mine will look huge down under.
