JDs 86' 4Runner DLX Restoration/Build
I bought an 86' DLX 4Runner a few years back because my car build got out of hand and took away its daily driver reliability. I remember these truck as a kid, and after about 3-4 months of searching, I found one I couldn't pass up. Very clean, typical rear end sag but no body rust and a very well kept interior. The original plan was to "keep it stock"...yeah given my gear head mentality, and the true potential of these trucks, that didn't happen. So here is the progression so far:
Engine (first thing modded)
LCE Throttle body
LCE TB spacer
LCE Header
LCE ProTorquer cam
TG CAI
Billet flex fan
Polished intake manifold
Flowmaster exhaust
Suspension
SkyJacker Soft Ride rear leafs (0-2")
SkyJacker M95 Monotube shocks
Wheels
Level8 Motorsports Tracker Pro 15x8.5 -27offset
General Grabber 33x12.5
Braking
LCE drilled/slotted rotors
Stainless lines
Exterior
TG RD low profile bumper (modded)
TG RD rear bumper
TG rock sliders
TG indicators
LED lights (20" bar, 50" curved bar, 6" pods, Rigid A-Series exterior)
Interior
Restored SR5 front seats
SR5 Altimeter
Rockford Custom 8" Sub enclosure
JL Audio 6" 2ways
Custom kick panel speaker mount w/ Apline 8" 2way
Alpine 4" 2way (stock dash location)
Sony Deck
Photos
Started here
Wanted more lights
Then went ocd on the engine bay
Added TG bumpers to prevent morons on the AZ hwys from ruining my truck in traffic, oh and added new rubber
TG all coated
Test fitting LEDs

I got around to installing the roof light bar last night and this morning. Ended up using some steel rivets and made my own custom brackets for the 50" radius bar.
Here are the rivets and brackets
Installed it fits snug by the door weather stripping but the doors close just fine. Going to run a water proof plug to the roof for this and will give me options for other lights...not that I think I will need them haha.

Great looking truck!! Wow talk about a clean engine bay! All you need now is some led front turn signals with little brackets so you don't need those zip ties. As far as suspension do you only have ball joint spacers up front? Also I see in your signature that you have an 84 4runner as well. Was that the gray one that was on ebay not too long ago?

For fun, I dyno'd the runner yesterday. Putting down 89hp and 120tq isnt too bad for an engine thats about 30 years old and rocking 230K miles haha. Had the gearing been better, im sure my torque numbers would be higher.

Nice truck man.. your engine bay is hilariously clean, I love it!
How are those light racks? What kind of actual light does it give? I'd love to see some real world use pics.. I've been trying to decide what kind of lights I want.. but I don't want anything to massive.

Thanks Gevo! I have an obsession with engine bays haha. The curved 50" is rated to 19k lumens, the pods at 800, and the 20" bar 6k iirc. I'm still wrapping up the wiring but when done I will take some photos from both inside and outside the truck out here in the desert. The plus side to LEDs is they draw very little

Good to hear about those front blinkers! haha
Such a great transformation with the entire truck. Lights look so badass. What percentage tint on those windows? 5%? And can't wait to see some interior shots

Thanks! I can't wait to have all of them wired up haha. I will post some pics for everyone so they can have an idea of the LED output. The window tint was on the truck when I got it but it's pretty darn dark. I can't see well out the back on a dark night hence the rigid LEDs in the back haha. My interior is tore apart a little right now. I'm taking the dashpad, altimeter hood and split back seat from the 84. My sr5 seats are being recovered with vinyl and suede so right now I have one crap eBay seat.

Yeah, looks like limo tint! And can't wait to see the progress on the interior, really love the stance on this rig. You ever think about a SAS?

I removed the dash pad and cluster cover from the 84 yesterday. The struggle I have right now is removing the passenger dash vent without breaking it (in the '86). The dash pad is so hardened that its near impossible to get behind the lip of the vent to push down on the metal clips. I have a horrible feeling I will end up breaking it :/ The one in the 84 is toast. I destroyed it trying to get to those clips. Not pleased about that. Last thing I want to do is ruin both of them.

I desperately need to re-gear the axles as well. This is my dilemma right now. I want 488 gears for the 33s. Adjust the rear axle is simple. Now the question is what to do up front. Do I waste ~$3-400 on re-gearing the IFS 7.5" or do go all out and convert the front axle and get gears for that 8"? The latter will cost me a lot more and Ive just dropped 1500 on new wheels/tires. Im trying to find this happy medium for a little while. 410s definitely do not cut it.

Here are a few pics of the interior as of two weeks ago. You can see the baller ebay seat and then next to it the beat up SR5 seat. My dash is cracked which I'm in the process of swapping. The rear bench seat is in amazing condition, I just dont want a bench seat. The buckets are way more comfortable for passengers, not to mention the fact I can drop just half of the seat for large cargo. I will grab some of the custom storage and sub cabinet later today.
