Seems like family is getting spread out across the country more and more these days and it does make it tough to stay in touch with them at times. Unfortunately it seems like it takes a funeral to bring everybody together anymore. Time moves alot faster then we think.

Just checking in and seeing if you are having any luck with the injector issue.

Figured out the miss issue finally. I knew it was on the fuel side and was convinced it was a wiring issue but I had checked everything every way I knew to check. So this time I dug deeper and pulled the fuel rail and injectors I wasn't sure what I was looking for but when I looked at number 2 and 3 injectors I knew something wasn't rite. They were plugged solid with crud I assume rust. I cleaned them out as best I could with carb cleaner and put it all back together and fired it up, it ran like a top for about 30 minutes and then slowly started to miss again. I had cleaned the tank before but I guess its time to drop the tank and give everything thing a good cleaning and flush the lines some how suggestions are appreciated.
I also picked up a rear bumper off CL, its in great shape but getting it mounted was a bit of a challenge. I figured the factory bolts were broke off on my runner I never really looked but to my surprise all the holes were clear however when I tried to thread a bolt in them it was a no go, the threads were so rusted I couldn't even start a bolt. I thought about several ways to remedy the problem but everything I came up with seemed to complicated so I decided I would just redrill them and retap them to 3/8 thread, was still a pain to do but it work. Now I just need to figure out how to mount the side filler pieces because some dumb butt cut the factory mounts off, yet another ill thought out plan.

Right on in the gremlin hunt! Makes sense. I had that with a rust free tank. .....I had forgotten to flush out the rail really well. Filter should grab lots of that rust, but if it's just liquefied sludge rust, then that would explain the screens and such building up quickly with said sludge. That really sucks that you might have to drop to tank again, but may I make a suggestion while you're there...? I would take a good look at moving the tank over , if in fact you think it might be an issue with clearing the straps or strap bolts, like I'm dealing with another words?

I know you're a BA DIY'er.... But how much would it be to have your fuel tank professionally flushed? Maybe be treated as well?

I'm not sure mark I'm sure it would be pricy but I'm also not sure how much work its going to be to completely drop the tank. Talking to terry he says oh its no big deal but for him pulling one out of a river that had previously been burnt to the frame that had before that been flipped end over end and rebuilding it to awesome condition is "no big deal" lol.

Dropping the tank onthe first gen 4runner is cake, just gotta empty it.

I have to drop mine to mod for the new leaf spring straps. It's either that or bend the lip, which im not sure would be enough, alone, at full/angled stuff of the tank side leaf.

I thought i did full directions on this, IIRC, when beginning my build. It was in the first 20pgs IIRC. Not sure, maybe I didnt get pics. Was early on. But I nearly did so simply because I didn't know that you only have to lift up the rump portion of the rear passenger seat on the passenger side in order to access the fuel pump! Dohhhhh! Lol. Like I said, it was early on. Hahahahaha

hey jason
easy let the truck help ya put a filter on the fuel line an hose to a can big enough to hold the gas an let the pump empty the tank filters out any suspect crud as it does so (not wasting the gas)
drop tank clean it
carb cleaner profusely in the fuel lines while they are off blow them out while the tank is out
the rail an lines from the filter to injectors same thing

once your sure that your getting clean fuel i just did the injector screens an seals on mine took pictures its easy (just dont get the kid to help spray ya in the face with carb cleaner..)

Hate to waste gas, but isn't it possible to get plumes of liquefied rust back in there if u reuse the fuel?

Either way, sounds thorough, William!

thats why use an inline filter that you just toss in the can the stuff wont be under pressure like the fuel rail so you can use any good disposable filter an pump it right into a can

IF it is rusty after that then use the gas for lawn mowers an such but only if it goes through the filter with rusty look an if its left to settle the rust will settle to the bottom of the can where ya can pour off the good on top

about all I got done was soaking the tank bolts with PB blaster, I dont want to do my normal rush into this and wind up with a bunch of broken bolts. Im so not looking forward to haveing to do this but it is what it is. Ive also noticed my throw out bearing is rattling more and more all the time so I guess I get to pull the tranny but thats gonna have to wait. my shop is still tied up with the 3rd gen but hopfully I will have that rapped up soon.

wanted to thro up a pic of the new to me rear bumper

You've got a nice group of kids, I'm very sorry for the circumstances that brought you all together but I'm glad you had their support and they, yours.

Your new bumper looks good. Glad to hear about the crud infested injectors. Even if you do have to pull the tank and do a lot to deal with them it's nice to know what it is. Nothing's more annoying than trying to figure some elusive thing out.

Thanks for checking in Hab, it was nice to see all my kids like I said it doesn't happen often enough.

It nice to have a diagnosis for the miss issue. Now I can atleast have a plan of attack.

The rear bumper really helped the looks out alot. The dent is almost in the center, are you sure that isnt a factory body mod?? lol.. Those hydrants can be a little viscious. It could of been worse and that might be something you could work out at a slow steady pace. Truck is looking better each time you work on it.

On both of my runner builds, I had to do some gas tank repair on them. It is something that is often neglected and I have seen some bad ones here in the midwest. I try to mention it in my threads and when I see questions that come up on the home page about how bad these tanks can get and the fuel lines.

I am soaking the bed bolts on my 85 and I can tell from a PO that I already am going to have some tank issues and will try and post some tips and tricks on that build as well. I would suggest that if you are going to pull the tank, while we have some cool days still coming our way that I would do it as soon as possible. Working on gas tanks when it is warm enough to get fumes really scares me. Once I get it flushed and coated, I dont worry so much. It is just when pulling it and working with it at first and fumes can be seen.

got out and tinkered a little today. pulled the cover under the seat and started trying to get the pump assembly out, the small bolts the hold the assembly in the tank came out fine no issues at all, however the main fuel line would not budge so I soaked it down and will try it again next time Im home. another project Ive been wanting to get to is swaping dash pads with the one in the 84 pu, its not perfect but much better than the one in mine. Not nearly as big a project as I thought it might be managed to do it with out breking the a/c vent on either truck yeah me LOL.got the one put back in the pu but want to paint the one going back in the runner so it will have to wait. another thing that since I noticed the last time I was at terrys I noticed something differant about the dash in both his runners, the bezel around the gauge cluster was diferant than mine. more rounded edges and just a softer look, I really wanted that for mine. well the salvage yard across the road from my house is going to crush out a close up so I wanted to just see what they had and low and behold they had one of the bezels I was looking for. the old man that used to own the place past away a few months ago and his son took over and he doesnt want the salvage part he just wants the wrecker bussiness anyway he told me if it wasnt engine or metal parts just take it so score for me.
