@Jason

I hear you on the time thing. Its funny, I wanted to work on one of these trucks for years, took me forever to start, and now that I've started it kills me when I can only find 2hrs in a night to spare for the truck. Either way, glad you posted with me cause it brought me to your thread, you seem to have a really good patience for details, I should learn from this

"FORWARD HO!!!!!!!!!!!" LOL. I hear ya..... Worked this morning, ....then sped off to Japanese Truck Dismantlers, grabbed the block and a new set of timing cover bolts off a motor in the back while I waited.... 20-min later, sped back and pulled the block out and dropped it in the garage, .... prepped and served late lunch, ...came back out and spent 1 hour gutting the block, ..... came back in prepped and served dinner, cleaned up, ..............here I sit, too tired to screw with the thing any more! lol.

You'll get it, Jason, and I KNOW, FOR SURE, I will be one of many saying, "HOLY CRAPOLI, ...that thing is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet~!" .....ok, maybe it's just me who says 'holy crapoli', ...but you know what i mean! lol.

Best wishes, and know you and your wife are in my prayers!

Mark

had an unexspected day at home today didnt get anywork done so to speak but I did spend some time in the shop. as long as this thing has been apart things have gotten kinda scatered around, parts in this shed and that box, so I spent awhile just gathering things back upand sort of taking inventory. I found just about everything ther are a few things missing that are going to take more digging.

I do have a few ??
after looking at my motor mounts Im sure they need replaced my ? is are the mounts from the parts store adiquit or sould I look somplace else?
does anyone have a rough idea what the factory radiator in these weighs? I picked mine up and I was shocked how heavy it felt. what if anything could make a radiator gain weight? I dont think its been eating donuts haha.
does anyone have or know of a sorce to get the original style hose clamps?
Ive got more but its been a long day and I cant remember, thanks for checking in.

hey man glad to hear your at the part when you start thinking of parts going back on good deal
um if i remember correctly your wanting to wheel this thing mostly so i would look into some after market motor mounts in my experience the auto parts replacement motor mounts just don't like abuse at all a friend of mine broke 2 from one of the national chain stores motor mounts before we ended up making him a set because there was not a big after market for his truck any way just my .2

was there a lot of rust in the coolant when you drained it could be rust or stop leak or what not i would use compressed air on it use some rags and plug around a air nozzle and blow it out

I believe blueyfab.com or allprooffroad.com have solid motor mounts for 1st 4runners and trucks. They're very strong mounts, but they also add a lot of vibration, cause they're solid and don't have the huge hunk of rubber like the factory mounts do. I plan on gettin solid mounts just because the abuse my rig will be taking, but if you want comfort, then factory mounts won't transfer the vibration of the motor through the chassis.

Thanks for the input NV, moze. I remember reading in somebody's thread that they reworked factory mounts somehow, drilled thru the rubber and put a bolt thru it something like that like I said don't remember who or how, but they had been running solid mounts didn't like them and wanted something in-between, I will have to search for it some more.
As far as the Rad I'm sure I remember there being rust in the coolent but not real bad. I'm going to try and flush it and see what I get, then go from there.

Another idea, which is one I'll be pursuing due to increasing weight in the front end, is getting an aluminum radiator. My buddy has one in his Samurai and it does alright, but since hes running 35" tires on a 1.3lt motor, he had to make the switch to an electric fan. Though I've never had over heating issues with my current radiator (aside from tearing a belt once) Something a little lighter and more adequte for running all day during triple digit temps would be good for me. Just an idea if you want to save on weight

If mine has to be replaced I will definitely be looking at aluminum but I'm really hoping to be able to use what I've got. I was running an electric fan before and will be reuseing it however it will be wired properly this time.

Tried to flush the Rad with just water and got nothing. Any suggestions? This thing only over heated once and I was working it really hard so I'm kinda wondering if this is just in my head.

Hello Jason, On your raditor, every one of them I have ever messed with is really corroded. What I do is pull it and take it to a radiator shop. Here in town it runs $25 to flush it and $10 to usually solder the brackets back on.

These are going on nearly 25 years so it is the thing I just started doing. I have tried the home flush kits and you just cant get enough pressure to knock it all loose.

I had flushed one and it looked good from inside the cap. It still overheated and when I saw the pressure flush it looked like mud coming out. I have had 5 done and all have had the same results. 4 of them had broken brackets. It drops the temperture way down.

As far as clamps, I get them at the salvage yard. Same thing with an loose bolts or what tools I have available, I grab everyone of them. Got a Preston jug full of bolts and clamps. One of these days I will get them seperated and organized. The bone yard doesnt charge for them. Dont know how may times my Preston jug as saved my butt.

25$ is pretty good, lol. Sup Terry?

Personally, I've done it both ways, "all the way", ....

1. Re-rod and complete re-do, (usually around 80$ to get my stock one back to like new)

2. Just bought a new Hand made in Carson, CA, rated "OEM Quality", .....168$ with Warranty.

It's funny... the second I replaced my water pump, the thing started actually pumping and VOILA, 2 days later, the radiator started pzzzzzzzzing and just gave up the ghost all together on day 2. The place I bought mine from took it apart for me and let me look...... it was COMPLETELY eaten away in there, ..not just build up, etc. They could have re-rod'd it, ..but I figured, ...24 years...... can't be a bad plan to buy new.

I've had this Trailer Package 2 row in these for 18 years, .....NEVER had one not do it's job if it's in good shape and clean. Nothing wrong with a 3 row, aluminum, .....etc. Either way you go, you'll get a good'n goin, ..I'm sure!

on the radiator i think i would go with the power flush thing for 25 but the ultimate option without buying a new one is like chef said getting it re-rod-ed that way you know your good

I'm gonna have to check around home and find a shop. Dirtco made the motor mounts I mentioned before I'm going to do some research on them and maybe save a few bucks and still have good mounts. Make a decision on that after I look into it some. Anyway thanks for checking in and for the advice.
