You would need a 3 stage switch. Depending on your price, I might just buy your crawl box setup.

So I subscribed to this thread a month ago and haven't had time to read through it till today. I just bought pretty much the same vehicle you have. While I'm still waiting on my t3 turbo to get rebuilt this has given me tons of ideas! I am really interested in the transmission controller. I too want to stay with the auto but it sure would be nice to control the damn thing every once and a while. Keep up the good work!!!

Thanks guys! When I first started building the last truck I spend a bunch of time on the Internet and looked through dozens of build threads. I really learned a lot and after years of wrenching, wheeling and researching, I figured that I would return the favor.

86Toyrunna, your 4Runner is looking sweet! I love snow wheeling .

I'm going to try to document the transmission controller and gear drive transfer case adapter the best I can. Sometimes it's hard when you get in a hurry and you have to drive the thing home that night.

Work has been super busy and my Internet has been down for a few days, so I thought I would give a quick update.

Along with all the other stuff I ordered up the other day, I also ordered up a bunch of electrical supplies so I can finnish wiring up all of my lights, transmission controller, etc. I found this place called Del City (delcity.net), they have a huge selection and cheap pricing. Everything I wanted was in stock and the package arrived today.

The transmission controller should have been here by now, but there was a mix up in the shipping address (my fault). I thought it was going to be sent UPS, but he sent it USPS. My mail does not get delivered to a physical address, so it's been a huge PITA dealing with the Post Office. Rory at Radesigns has been awesome and has done everything he can to get me the shifter as soon as possible (he say's before this weekend I should have it).

I also got my shocks and tie rod ends from TG today.

Everything is not completly good though

I've been dealing with a few issues that have been driving me crazy.

First, I had a huge oil leak that came out of nowhere. I cleaned up the engine a little and had a guy I work with look at it with me. After looking at it for a while, we thought it was leaking between the head and timing cover. After work I removed the turbo ducting, valve cover, etc and found that the small bolt at the front of the head (under the dist. gear) was missing. I was lucky and the GF's dad (who is also building a 4Runner) had an extra 22R around and I was able to steal the bolt that I needed.

I got everything re-installed and cleaned the crap out of the engine. I started it up and guess what... the oil leak was still there. It was leaking from the front oil pump housing / crank shaft pully seal. The oil was leaking into the back side of the pulley and then was getting thrown everywhere. While I don't think it was leaking from the head / timing cover, it was still good that I installed that missing bolt, so I guess it worked out.

Good thing you found both of those problems. I had the same leak behind the pump and the dang oil slinging everywhere killed my alt at the 175,000 mile mark and was so bad it killed the replacement less than 500 miles later since I had no idea where it was leaking from, there was a groove worn in there by the original seal and a speedy sleeve and new seal fixed it. It's an easy fix though and only took about an hour and a half.

Friday, before I had a chance to fix the oil leak I ran into another issue. I was driving to work (about 25 mph) and the 4Runner died on me. I tried to start it back up and it would only run for about 2 seconds and then die (I know, there are two more threads about this right now). After about ten minutes it started up and I drove for about a 1/2 mile and then the same thing happened again, after another 5 minutes it started again and I made it to work.

First I tore down the front of the engine and replaced the seal that was leaking. Here's how much oil there was after only a day or two.

While I was there I replaced all the belts and radiator hoses. I also noticed the radiator had a small leak, so I installed the newer one that was in the green 4Runner (it was only a couple months old, and I bought the turbo version in case I ever needed a spare )

I also replaced my fuel filter thinking that could have been part of the reason it was running wierd.

While I was under the hood I took care of a couple other things.

It had an old K&N filter that had seen better days. The filter also had a stupid lip on the insde of the flange, it would never want to set right on the AFM. I had my True Flow filter that was also in the green 4Runner, so I installed that replace the K&N. It was a bit bigger so I moved the coolant overflow tank a couple inches toward the radiator. It's a tight fit but it works and the True Flow filter does a better job of filtering than the K&N.

Old

New (It looks like it is touching the overflow tank but it is not, just really close)

Is that the factory AFM? If so then I recommend the Supra MAF upgrade. It'll let that turbo breathe a little better.

While I was changing the air filter and moving the AFM, I noticed that the AFM cover was not sealed right. I popped the cover off (without any cutting or trimming) and found a bunch of dust inside. It seems that someone before me adjusted the gear wheel inside (without marking the stock set up ) and never sealed the cover. I cleaned it up the best I could and resealed the cover. It now seems to idle better and have a better throttle response.

Sunday it ran great, but Monday morning I ran into the same issue, this time in my driveway. I went out to start it and let it warm up before the drive to work (it was super cold, 15-20 below 0'), it died shortly after starting it and would not run for more than 2 seconds, after about five minutes it started up and it ran great (after warming up). It also ran good today with no issues.

I thought it was the factory Turbo AFM, but after looking at yours I think it might be a Supra AFM. The little tabs off to the side look the same as the one you have. When you get time would you mind posting the part numbers on your AFM cover, mine has two sets of Toyota part numbers (one above the other). Thanks!
