DeRoo's '88 4Runner build.

Hello every body, just picked up the new to me yota. I think I am already in love with this thing. Motor runs a little rough, put a new cap rotor plugs and wires in it, runs better but still seems a little off to me. Waiting for the room mate to get back and I'm going to seafoam it. Hopefully all this helps, will update as I get things done. Sorry my sentences are a little fragmented, typing this on the iPad. Hoping to set this thing up for camp/over landing. Will be spending a lot of time on the Eglin range.

Great looking little runner. What are your plans for it? I reposted the pic for you. If you hit the quote button on my post you will see the picture in text form and that will give you a better picture. May want to set you pic settings for a larger picture. Looking forward to your build

I plan to build it to camp / overland in it. Hoping within the next 6 months to lift it a couple of inches, make it descently capable off road, while not ruining the rid quality on road. Between now and then I am trying to get it running 100% which is proving to be a challenge already. The front end has a little bit of slop, seems to me to be about 5 to 10 degrees, will be looking into that soon. I am thinking about June, July time frame, if I can get the leave time, me and a friend might be driving from pensacola to denver in the 4runner, plan to stop in st. louis and a few other places on the way. Going to camp the whole trip. Will definetely take picure and post them when it happens.

Back to the build/restoration. Well it always amases me how the simplest job turn into the biggest pain in the ass. Going to include a little anecdote to maybe make what I was thinking make sense.

So I went with the room mate to pick up his new bike, on the return trip home I had to drive the interstate at 45 mph in 3rd gear. If i put it in 4th or 5th, I could not sustain speed, and quickly begain slowing down. Arrived home, and quickly ran to the part store.

I picked up a fuel filter in the hope of that fixin it. I will explain my thought processes if need be. Got home and quickly began what I expected to be the simple task of changing the filter. Got it off no problem, started to install the new filter, and everything was going well till the fittings that screw into the filter started to round off. I got creative and made my own little fiting wrench and cut a section out of a box end wrench. Worked great untill again the fitting started to round. So, being the optimist I am, I said f it and tried cranking the truck and hope it was good enough. Didn't work and ended up getting a pretty good fuel bath.

Stared at it, made a couple noises at it, nothing changed so I am calling it quits for the night. I am hoping to wake up tomorrow and worse case splice in a little bit of the hard line. Maybe make it easier for the next person to change the filter.

Feel like that was rather long winded, my bad yo!

Nah you'd hear a nice loud rattle if that was it but they also used a 22r head gasket onmy 22re and used waaay to much liquid gasket in places they shouldent, does it get hot fast?
If you wanna know what's really going on a master rebuild kit is ~200 ish dollars, plus another couple hundred for new bolts and oils and unforseen circumstances but by the end of it you'll know exactly what's going on with that motor

Well I am please to report Fran is up and running well, finally got the pressure regulator in, among a whole list of other things, adjusted the timing the idel, then drove it to the gas station, and she runs like a champion now.

I spoke to soon, I took her around the block today, and she is not happy about life right now. I can't keep her running, and she won't rev over 3500 unless in 4lo. I am at my wits end, and need some help!! Anyone want a semi running 4runner??

Try adjusting your TPS. That little bugger will cause you many problems like you are describing.

Beautiful runner!!

There really isn't enough adjustment available on the TPS for it to still think it is idling with the throttle mashed to the floor.

However unplugging it does the trick sometimes.

If that solves the power issue, Do the TPS and VAFM inspections. You want to watch the Ohm or voltage while moving them over the full range and it should have a nice smooth curve, eg no dead spots. If you have dead spots or spikes it'll be due to wear(printed conductive strips) or gunk(oil, dirt, or loose conductive material).

You never posted the compression test results, did you check those yet?

Did you blow out the fuel lines when you put in the new tank?
