Well it was rebuilt...and bored out. Thus it has a little more get up and go.

I'm thinking I might try to do a compression test on the head just to check everything and go from there. I feel my head is in good shape. Not sure what made my guide crap out, possibly wasn't replaced.

If I get bad compression this might become a bigger project...still up in the air about yanking the motor....Is it that much more to remove, I mean I feel you take a lot out just to have access to the timing cover....I'm a 22r so no confusing vaccums and big ole efi.

Email sent to engnbldr. Asked a few questions I had, haha he probably gets asked these same questions all the time.

Hoping to get a compression test sometime soon, we have a MAC compression tester, one of the mechanic like tools that we got from my step dads uncle's passing, he was always tinkering with cars, go karts, anything with wheels! He had a 2000ish corvette, man that thing was a beaut!

Selling off a few of my junk things laying around my house to raise some funds for this repair....not that I don't have the money, just have a lot of junk laying around that I been meaning to get rid of and this repair gives me a reason to sell.

Pulling the engine is honestly your best bet ole buddy. If you check out my build thread you will see that I to just went through this. I just replaced my timing kit two days ago because the one I just installed failed. I left the pan and head on when I replaced and I've now sprung a minor oil leak on the passenger side were the cover and head meet the block.

Pulling the engine is really easy if you got a cherry picker. You ain't got but a hand full of bolts to remove and just a few lines. Once its out throw it on a engine stand. Drop the pan and let it drain over nite. Then start disassembling. It's so much easier. If ya do it that way and use proper sealants and gaskets you will be fine. You can buy a complete gasket kit for around 100.00 it will include every gasket that you need along with a few extras. Take your time and do it right. If not you will regret it in the long run.

I pulled my engine in less then 2.5 hrs with the help of my wife. Mines a 22re. Once pulled I spent a entire day replacing all gaskets and such and swapping my donor 22r over to a 22re. The following day my wife and I had it back in my truck and driving it within 3 hours of starting.

Good luck and feel free to ask me anything. I will answer all to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks ToyotaBoy

Do you have a homemade cherry picker or a legit one made by a big company.

The more and more I think about it, the more I feel I wanna yank it...only problem with yanking it is the tools
A. Need a hoist/cherry picker
B. Engine stand
C. Torch or something to help get the crankshaft bolt off(Can I break it loose using the starter method, before I take the motor out of truck)

If i do it this way, I will be removing the head most definitely. Any links/deals on engine stands, hoists, and cherry pickers would be much appreciated...I'll look too just have so many links up it's not even funny.

Hmm email from Ted, man is that fellow prompt! I had a email back quicker than the time it took me to write it haha.

Hmmm if i yank the motor I could fix my oil leak on the driver side....not sure what is leaking but could gunk it down and find out....know it's near the manifold kinda(driver side) nothing major just a leak.....

Thinking aloud....

Found out we have a harbor freight within a hour and half's distance....

I have done timing chain or head gasket in the truck, but it does seem to be "Well since I am at this point, I may as well do this and this". Where do you stop at. If you have several leaks, I say pull it. HF engine stands are about $40 if I recall right. Cherry Pickers arent cheap. I need one myself. I keep hoping one will pop up on Craigslist.

Sounds like you are going to pull it and your back will Thank you in the long run.

DO the Starter method before starting anything on the truck if you are going to pull it. It royally sucks having to use a cheater bar and everything else that can come along with a stuck crankshaft bolt. Been down that road before. If you have access to a great air compressor that can help to take the bolt out, but I have had to take a motor to a shop with a 1/2 inch air hose before to break that bolt loose.

@Terry Well when I got the truck it had oil absolutely everywhere....my motor was a oily/grimy mess. Since then I have gunk'd it down and cleaned it up....It cleaned up really nicely, kinda shocked me haha. Since the gunk down I have put 3k miles on the truck and the passenger side is still spotless. I guess the leak was getting on the belts and getting slung everywhere. I have the leak right at the manifold..Also maybe at the oil pan, honestly haven't looked there.

Might be going to look at a 86 22r 4wd on monday. The guy says it needs a fuel pump..Do 22r's have fuel pumps, there carb'd? Anyways he says he can get it started for me to hear it run and that I can pop the valve cover to check out the timing chain guides. Anyways he's wanting 700 obo and I'm kinda hoping I find something to get him down from 7....Haven't seen it in person so it might be worth the 700 I guess time will tell. In the words of my mom(HAHA), at least your looking at one that will run.(last one had blew up motor and bad frame)

Hmmmm now this would be helpful if someone were to....idk take there motor out. What you guys think? (If he would email me back)
http://charlottesville.craigslist.or...773657808.html

Last but not least, it's looking like I'm going to pull the motor, it just seems like the all around better way to do it. Upon doing this I was wanting to clean up my engine bay(It was on my list of things to do this summer) Anybody ever painted or seen where someone has painted the fenders where all the motor stuff bolts to. I was thinking of por 15'ing like 6 inches up, but the more I think about it, the more I don't think it will hold up to the heat of the engine bay.

Off to do some studying on what people are running for head gaskets....Wanna do it right the first time, love this ole girl!

well i did it in the driveway on my 79 which wouldnt start unless ya put gas in the carb changed that out an it runs good

she went through years as a fishing platform in corpus christy tx they backed her out on the beach an left her to get splashed by the waves an then went through a field fire which burned off the tires an other rubber bits... it wasnt impossible if he's wanting only that much for her its worth the price

That's pretty cool that you know some of the history of your truck! Man I would die to know the history on mine, I mean you can do carfaxes on them and see where there from and accidents/maintenance/other things but man I bet these ole toyotas could really tell some stories if they could talk....I mean to hear my step dad say what he did with his....just sounds ridiculous!

the reason i know about her is i traded a 79 chevy with a cracked frame an performance engine (street sleeper i used to race) he wanted it for the engine to put in his boat i was skeptical at the time when he told me what she'd been through an it would still run great

poured some gas in her out in a field in S central tx the battery from my chevy an vrrooom! dust an ect i drove her out on rims to where we could work on her 5 hrs later of repairs an some parts she was n my driveway which i was losing the house so it'd be what i could pack in the yota an move... thats her on the far right an my runner on the left (ignore the datsun diesel ranch truck in the middle)

That's pretty cool, man I keep trying to stumble on these old abandoned field trucks but man I can never find them. We have a few older pics of my truck, kinda pains me to see how she's aged so badly but I'm here to help her

Did some reading on fuel pump....hmmmm if it's the one up on the motor the guy would be dumb to not replace it? 2 bolts 3 lines? Might buy one and try and install real quick while there....that and the outer fuel filter....I have a set of good gas lines that are practically new, come off my rusted out cab(were a pain to uninstall...) but even the one in tank as long as the truck isn't too rusty shouldn't be too bad....700 and easily running isn't sounding too bad(As long as it will start, all the quirks could be worked on) whole spare block with all the plugs and what not on it....If I did get it running I would prob turn around and sell it...too many projects right now!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the compliment. The 86 22r will have a filter in the tank. Every time on the main page about something coming up on filters in the tank, I show a picture of what it looks like and someone is always surprised that ithere is one in the tank.

Then there is another one that is just on the outside of the tank and I am not able to find a picture of one of them. The one on the outside of the tank is usually the one that gets clogged and should be replaced on a regular schedule.

Then you have a mechanical fuel pump on the front of the motor on the passenger side. I can get a picture of the fuel pump for you tomorrow. I do have an 86 truck out in the shop right now and maybe I can get a picture of the fuel filter just outside of the tank if all goes well.

I just got home from bring my brothers 88 22r home. Its fuel filter is getting clogged and wont rev over 2000 rpm. He doenst know anything about mechanics and was afraid of it breaking down on him. I was able to get it home for him and it will be next week before I can help him fix it. He doesnt have someone else to do it for him, I will do it and get some good pics for a reference.

I suggest pulling the bed instead of dropping the tank. There isnt a whole lot of slack in the fuel lines, but bed bolts can be a pain if they are really rusted. Been soaking my 85s bed bolts for a week now and still having a tough time.

I did find 2 trucks setting out in different fields today and wasnt able to get ahold of anyone. I am hoping to score one of them. I was working on Toyotas before I found Yotatech and knowing the ins and outs on these it is possible to make a dollar or two. But like you said, trying to get someone to sell them is getting harder everyday.

Copied from another build, this is what the Intank filter looks like. You can still get it from Toyota. You probably need to replace the filter on the outside to get that 86 running.

Copied
Part number for a new intank filter is #77023-12050. On ebay it is called a TOYOTA FACTORY NIB FUEL FILTER SUCTION TUBE DIESEL. It was selling for $4.50 when I finally found it. I paid $15 at Toyota.
