This evening I finally got to work on my motor again. WOO!

I ended up cleaning out the threads where the head bolts down to. What a tedious and time consuming job. I just used a head bolt with a notch cut in it and kept threading it in and out. I guess I could have used a tap, but I have no experience with one and I felt like I could mess up too much if my first time was on the head bolt so I did it the hard way. The good news is now all 10 of my head bolts thread easily until the point where they snug up by hand and prior to that only 4 of them would.

I noticed in the bottom of 2 of my head bolt holes there was rust, is there really anything I can do about that or is jus something that happens in these bolt holes?

In the near future, I plan on cleaning up the threads for the crankshaft pulley and possibly putting on the timing cover, but before that, lots of rereading and double checking!

Shockingly I got a day off today and got to work on my motor some more, I worked on putting the timing chain guides and tensioner on today. I was reading what engnbldr gave me and they said to make sure the oil pump bolt doesn't protrude through the back of the timing cover. I tightened it up to the reccommended torque in my haynes and it just barely sticks through(forgot to snap a pic)

My guy at toyota said he didn't know if he could get the studs for my timing cover but he is looking. Unfortunately I also learned today that one of my timing cover bolts has decided to grow legs and walk away, been looking around the garage with no such luck, does any one know where I can get a replacement?

Anybody see anything that looks wrong?
Also does 12 inch lbs equal 1 foot lb, I read on the internet that it did but I would like to make sure.

I can't say there are any updates, November 9th I got into an accident and I ended up beating myself up pretty good. I broke my femur and a few ribs and well beyond totaled the 90 truck in my sig. Lets just say I rearranged the driver side IFS with an oak tree. Anyways I have lots of downtime in the recovery process, so I plan on being on here a whole bunch over the next few weeks, just reading and educating myself. Unfortunately not being able to walk on my own will power or pick up things somewhat limits me, but I should at least be able to have the downtime to get the motor together and possibly get it in the truck in the spring.

@nmtoy
Thanks man, I get a little better everyday.

@cyber
I personally haven't got to look at the motor, but I don't know how anything can be any good motor wise, oak trees don't budge even at high speeds...I know the tires are still good and some of the marker lights and brake light lens and maybe some of the stuff inside, we will see in the next few weeks when I get on my feet.

@terry
Yeah I broke it haha, I actually broke the lower leg bone back when I was like 6 too haha. Its okay tho, I should be up and at it in no time.

@kornhusker
Thanks for the kind words on the build, hopefully I'll have this thing up and running spring time. Also thanks for the words on healing, I'll get there

@gizler
Thanks man, always enjoy our little conversations and the advice you give.

I start therapy this coming wednesday, everyone tells me that's gonna be a blast lol. Currently I can get my knee to go about 80 degrees, slowly but surely I'll get there

I agree with Cyberhorn, the motor will probably be ok. May need to change some front end parts. I would strip the truck down to every nut and bolt I can get. You will be surprised what all you will need for your next project. Even things I was wondering about keeping has paid off several times over.

Well a little bit has changed here in the past few weeks. I finally went and saw my mangled truck, It appears that the block is still in good shape some how, it's like msot of you said, I destroyed the water pump and timing cover, knocked the distributor off, destroyed the alternator and well a lot of carnage.

My buddy and I planned on yanking it this week, but we got about 4 inches of snow so it's not looking promising this week. We plan on just cutting the front clip off beings its nothing really good.

The big change is the vehicle I have now, I ended up getting a 99 4Runner with 116k miles for 3200$. It had a rear axle seal leak and wouldn't pass inspection. Between making it pass inspection and doing cheap and minor upgrades, I have around 4000 in it. I think I got a good deal for around here. Definitely a lot more get up and go than the 22r.

My rebuild is in the garage all organized up and should commence here in the next few weeks.

I have a 01 but think the 99 is the best year of the 3rd gens. You have the best of the both worlds in the 3rd gens. The early 3rd gens had the rear diff lock and the later 3rd gens had the center console.

Hope you are well and walking again.

Well, it's been a long time since I have posted, there's a lot of changes, still have this truck...the runner is gone... got a 2wd 87 4 speed 22r and a 96 taco 4wd 5 speed 2.7 3rz

recently got doors with vent windows and a hood and an intermittent wiper relay so my intermittent wipers will work...
Hopefully within the next 6 months I plan on swapping my new body parts and prepping for paint
also got some stock chrome wheels im thinking about putting on it

someday I wanna do BJ spacers and 63 chevys in the back
Thinking long and hard about whether i want to flat bed or get an original for it(have a 2wd bed that has a little cancer)

new to the club

Howdy all from Northern Nevada. I just picked up a '87 toy pickup 4x4 for my son... truck I dreamed of as a teen back in the day... I am leaking from the oil pan. I am going to change the oil, change manual tranny fluid and rear bell housing oil. How do I get the darned oil pan off to replace the gasket??? Last old truck I worked on was a scout as a kid... Many years ago (other than military amtracks).. Advice and maybe pics needed. Thanks all!
