Hope you can get it out, wrapped up quick and back in and on the road in no time, buddy

Has yer pop's listened to it? What's his thoughts? Seemed like a pretty apt Yotadude, haha.

Yeah, you know..... when I had to drive my buddies rig out when he BROKE his CV up front on a mine road in the Sierras... he drove mine, and unfortunately knocked the bolt housing good and JUST PERFECTLY with a rock... This backed the screw out just enough to where it rattled close to OUT on this trail down... Didn't notice til getting home, and when I checked, it was VERY low.... The reason I checked is because it was making the STRANGEST SOUND... Lil bit of it was a whine, but more so a sound like..... a bunch of ball bearings in a bag, bouncing around on each other... Or like it would sound if you had a bunch of BB's in your mouth and were sloshing them around... Filled it up and NOT A PEEP since.. BUT, ... lots 4th Synchro in the process, hahaa. Odd thing was.. Before this, it was POPPING OUT OF 4th... After refilling, etc., ....it was NOT GOING INTO 4th,....with the clutch at least, without grinding all the time. Now I just dry shift into 4th every time... not a single grind! hahaha. I tell ya... I'd LOVE to have a brand new TOYOTA BUILT ORIGINAL/OLD-NEW STOCK Trans......... But I just don't think I'm willing to sign over both my children and their children as collateral! hahaha. Gotta be in the 2-3 THOUSAND range, right?

Best wishes, Blake... Sorry man... I hope it doesn't worsen, but at least you have the right job in order to deal with it expeditiously, RIGHT?

That would make me just slightly passive aggressive :p

It's true though, luckily I have tools and knowledge at my disposal.
I just need some time and experience to really make it a fun ordeal

heres a vid to help show the sound... 5th gear you can hear it the best. but if you really listen you here the whine quietly behind the exhaust noise 1,2 and 3rd gear.

yea had a hard time describing the sound so i figured I'd just share.

if you turn the volume up you can hear noise in the earlier gears, but yea 5th is the most obvious.

My dad always had a saying, drive it when breaks you're know what to fix.....
Do not think that would help, but it's tried and true....

That sounds just like mine did when it kicked the bucket - the "grinding" noise under load, and the lack of noise in 4th (1:1 drive ratio is likely why).

The danger is that, with play in the bearings, your gears are left to their own devices, phsyics, torque, etc - it's a recipe for disaster for the whole transmission.

I drove mine in 4th as long as I could, thinking that would prolong the life (while I shopped for a used tranny), and eventually, 4th would start popping out and I couldn't drive it anymore till the swap.

I replaced mine, then took apart the old broken one to inspect it. The main input shaft bearing was toast - had a TON of play in it.

When shopping for a new (used) tranny, I would hand turn the shaft, in all gears, and listen for a "dragging" noise - that indicated to me bad bearings - the one I found and replaced with had no noise.

I recommend you shop for a used one and replace it soon, then take apart your current one and inspect bearings - your gears may be OK and you could get away with replacing just the bearing?

Or, if Marlin fixes it you're good!

Good luck!

Well, mine was the "broken" spare, disassebled in several pieces, in my backyard/garage....not that cool, but glad I finally got it to a good home.

I agree, would be great to have space/time/money for a trove of spare Yota parts for when the need arises

Yes, do the rear main and clutch while you're in there - cheap insurance! I did the TG TC mount upgrade too (I have the OEM one if anyone wants to buy it).

Hint: Whatever used tranny you get, make DAMN sure it's sealed right. Mine wasn't, and leaked. I had to remove it again, take apart, and re-seal it with FIPG red (don't use black!).

Good luck bud!

Update, Blake? Any decision on whether you're just gonna head in there and swap one in? Etc.? Curious. Best wishes either way.. Hope you can get more out of it. But if not, I hope you catch it in time
