Cool Backup Camera/Reverse Light Interior Wire Location 1995 Toyota Pickup 3VZE

Just to preface: this is my first time posting to YotaTech, but I've been reading the forums for quite some time since I was in high school, fixing up my '95 V6 Pickup to have a "reliable" form of transportation. I'm sorry in advance if this is not the right place to post this.

I'm making this post since multiple people have been asking on Reddit, Facebook, and even here on YotaTech about the location of the reverse light wires in the interior cabin of 89'-'95 Pickups, and their questions have been unanswered or ignored.

To start, if you take off the rear light assemblies, you can see that the power for the reverse light comes from a wire that is primarily red with both black stripes running along the length of the wire and purple (or blue? I'm slightly colorblind) blotches of color periodically appearing on it. Here's a picture of the wire in question:

This wire runs along the passenger side, is kept close to the chassis, and enters the cabin via a rubber grommet right under the front passenger seat. So, yes, you will have to take off the passenger seat for ease. That's easy, however, since it's just four bolts on the corners of the seat tracks. After you remove the passenger side seat, you have to take the four screws out that keep the little plastic trim piece (that holds the carpet down) attached to the edge of the floor (where the bottom of the door meets the floor of the cabin). The result of this process will look like this:

Now, if you look under the carpet carefully enough, there'll be a wire harness and male/female connector setup. There's a plastic clip holding the harness to the metal frame; use a long flathead to gently pry under the tab so that you can pull the wires closer to you (for easy access). This will look like:

Here's the fun part: find out which pin/port the reverse light wire from the exterior goes into, and figure out which wire from the interior of the cabin comes out from that same port (if that even makes sense). My point is, the wire coming from the outside of the cabin does NOT look the same as the wire coming from INSIDE the cabin. Find that wire and either trace it further into the cabin or splice the wire there for whatever purposes you need, and run the spliced wire wherever you need. This is where the instructional part of the post regarding the location of the reverse light wire inside the interior is finished.

Now, I'll transition to my main part of the project: adding a backup camera. Of course, you'll need to make sure you have a digital headunit installed and have a backup camera on hand that is compatible with the headunit. Also, as a quick note (as maybe I'm just stupid) but at this point make sure you've kept the wiring exposed and the carpet slightly peeled back still. You still need to run the signal wire for the backup camera from inside the cabin to the rear. Other than this, everything is mainly preference. A quick bit of wire loom and some metal wire to help feed your wire loom and signal wire combo along the chassis to the rear and you're golden; you can just wire a cheap little backup camera that attaches to the license plate OR you can be a masochist and wire one directly into your tailgate handle like I did to get a "stock" look that comes with the modern Tacomas and Tundras. The end result will look something like this:

If you have any questions regarding the logistics of installing this specific backup camera (and what the link for the backup camera is) then please do reach out. Otherwise, hopefully this post helped.
