Akwheeler's 95 4runner SAS

I took the safari rack off the top, but otherwise this is my starting point

95 V-6 automatic (I don't want to be shifting gears in the mud)

couldn't find any body cancer on this one. had some hacked up wiring though.

So, last year I sold off my 1980 regular cab that my buddy and I built for a moose hunting rig. it was just too small for both of us with our many guns and gear that we didn't want in the bed. there was no room for lunch! I bought this 95 4 runner to be our next hunting buggy so we'd have plenty of room. This one came from Nevada originally, so not much rust at all. the former owner didn't like the larger tires that were on it so he went small. It has a 1 or 2 inch body lift and I'm putting 3 inch trail gear leaf spring kits front and rear with 5.29 gears and zip lockers.

flat black paint and mud make for great camouflage!

we often had people following us wanting to buy Chucky. (perverted homicidal toy)

it was amazing where this truck would go with open diffs and a little 22R under the hood!

here is Chucky, the hunting truck I built with my best friend. we invested more in the 35 inch tires than we did in the whole rest of the truck, built our own front end lift and slapped some lift blocks on the back.

I'm going to have to fab up some new mounts for the ARB bumper

I might be able to stuff some 38.5 boggers on it, but I think I'll get some 35 inch to start with and see what room I have. I can always sell them later

here is the new "Bride of Chucky" moose buggy part way through the build

Does anyone have any tips on removing the rear wheel bearings from the axle shaft?
I've been searching the forum for a couple of hours and not coming up with anything. a link would be nice if you have one. I have the keeper and the press-on collar off, is the bearing pressed on the shaft as well?

Get the bigger tires... you know you want to. Sas looks good. Any plans on gearing/lockers/ etc?

As for the bearing, I made a tool like this one. Works mint.

Thanks Rattlewagon! I have a spare axle I could work with, but no press. I might have a bottle jack I could use though. From my first post I am going with 5.29 gears and zip lockers. high pinion front is already in.

here is what I built, I was planning to build a hoop over the top and use a bottle jack, but it turned out to be heavy enough to slam the axle against my chopping block and remove the bearing.

bearing installation tool

A little cut with the die grinder and a couple of hits on a chisel and the lock ring snaps

this didn't work with the lock ring in place, but with it gone I flipped it over and smacked the axle end down on my chopping block and it worked great

axles are ready with new bearings and seals.

my biggest problem yet, anyone else run into this?

this is really pissing me off! I got the old pinion bearings out in one piece, ground out the center to make them slip off for setting up the new gears and locker. put the new races in the housing, old bearings slipped on the new pinion in the housing. new ring gear and side bearings on the Zip locker and found out they will not fit in the housing. You can see in the picture that the 5.29 gears sit almost 1/2 inch taller! All my parts were from Trail-gear as well as the assembled front hi pinion Zip locker with 5.29s. I rechecked all the part numbers to make sure I got what I ordered and that they were listed for my 1995 v-6 rear end.

Does anyone know what the punch line is to this joke? do I need a different locker or a different gear set?

What I have found from Trail-gear is that my stock gear ratio of 4.88 is very rare in north America and that the pinion is offset with a thinner ring gear. They are willing to cut me a deal on a new housing, but I bought parts planning to build it myself and save a few bucks. That savings is gone and I should have bought it pre-assembled with a warrantee. I sure wish their website had mentioned that not all 8 inch v-6 housings are created equal and none of their 5.29 ring and pinion sets will work in the 4.88 housing. So, heads up people, if you have the 4.88 gears in your stock Toyota and want to re-gear you should just buy a pre-built drop-in pumpkin!
I'm ready to eat nails and s#!t cadillacs!

New update, I got the used differential housing and started to set up the locker and gears. It's only been 20 years since I did a differential rebuild. I ground down the inside of the old pinion bearings so I could use them as setup bearings trying multiple combinations of pinion shims and remind myself what a good pattern is supposed to look like. here is what I settled on. Any thoughts?

a couple of holes and a half moon cut out and I have a multi purpose special tool.

I also modified my axle bearing removal tool to use for a pinion flange holder.

I'm working on a tranny cooler and wondering which line is the output from the tranny and which is the input. Am I correct in assuming that the line nearest the front of the tranny is the input feeding the pump at the front and the one at the rear is the output?

Now that I think about it, part of that is a stupid question. the pump pickup is though the filter in the pan.

But, I still need to know which is the output to the cooler and which is the return.

Anyone? A340H

time for an update

New brake lines, creeper breather

welded tabs and hand bent lines

got some 37 inch boggers on new wheels from a friend, only about a 400 mile round trip but a good price.

I thought this showed up well in primer, and no, I'm not the greatest welder. should hold though

sadly, the automatic requires even more modification, front t-case flange.

modified t-case flange and new (to me) hi angle front driveshaft.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!! I got the majority of the work done, tank is back in and it still runs after 4 months! another day or two and I should be ready for a test drive.

The first pics of the Solid axle installed with the small tires is hysterical!

Sucks about your differential issue :/

Otherwise looking good!

What was rational for running brake lines over housing and spring plates? I'm rerunning mine soon.

had to reach the center of the rear axle, I wasn't going to run it underneath anything, I run through brush and mud when I'm hunting. I went around the back of the spring plates so I can still set up bump stops.

Gevo, loud? no, LOUD! I'm going to need a new stereo to compete with the HOWL from those cut down boggers.

I don't have any fresh action pics, but this baby wheels great! I'm looking at a T-100 with the 3.4 that I might pick up soon for a swap! I'll keep you posted
