Hello guys.. I dont really see anything to be worried about. That one picture of the cylinder still has crosshatch marks in it. Did the PO say this motor was rebuilt before you got it?
Might work on getting the water jackets cleaned out.
Doesnt look like it has a bunch of sludge built up in the camshaft area. I have seen alot worse.
I think I remember you taking compression checks, but cant recall your compression numbers. I would be tempted to have the heads checked, clean it up, and put it back together.
Looking good.

water jackets are already cleaned.....was a little micro surgery with joe running the big vacuum and me picking at the stuff with a hex key. puled the ??lifters?? out ....the shape of a big bottle cap with a quarter in the middle. weird. labeled and bagged them and it looks like the rest of the valve assembly is the same as my 22re.
we know VERY LITTLE about the history of this truck. PO said "new shocks, cat-back exhaust and fuel pump" and honestly, he was a VERY SCARY guy and I was more concerned for our safety and getting out of there than anything else.

oh while I am thinking about it and the fact your not tearing down the bottom end, get some wd-40 (not pb blaster) or a light coat of oil (wd-40 preferred) onto those cyl walls asap. spray, turn crank and spray again. Do this with both heads off so you don't have to worry too much about TDC #1 compression stroke. You don't want even the slightest about of surface rust to form on them.

DANG, woooot! Those cams look really good, .....at least what I can tell from THOSE pix!
hehe.
Yeah, .....I hope you don't have any bottom end issues.... I'm sure you'll be testing/verifying everything you can before slapping the heads back on, right? Looks great, man, ....excited for you guys, ...really getting close, eh?

a bit more progress. definitely will be happy when we are done degreasing stuff. what a mess we make.
1st pic......NEVER saw anything like this...(in my limited experience that is)....this is the sealer that was doing any sealing....it's like hard plastic.....and see-through.

here's our cleaning station to steam the head. tedious work, but with repetition and scrubbing with orange goop the steamer did the job very well.

while Joe was doing that, my helper Jeff turned over the crank after I oiled the piston walls and the I cleaned them....and covered it in saran wrap

action shot

and the finished product

and for reference, this was the driver's side head we were working on. wanted to do the worst one 1st, makes doing the 2nd one a bit easier. so here's the BEFORE pic

and we've made enough mess for the day. more importantly we've made substantial progress. work for the next 2...so maybe Joe will do some on his own

have come to the realization that we are going to need a different valve spring compressor. the one i have is NOT going to work because those springs are buried and not on top like on the 22re. BRANDON......could you do some sniffing around for me on that one.....point me in the right direction...AUTO ZONE is preferred......since there is one in Berwick too. my day to get one would be wednesday or the weekend.....wednesday is preferred.
plans are.....disassemble the heads (i have bags ready) clean the valve areas / lap the valves, reassemble the heads, install the heads, install the clutch and timing belt and clean up and paint what needs to be painted in the engine bay and put the motor back in. I have to figure out a small order from the dealer ....a few things i can think of is i ordered the wrong part # for either the nuts or the bolts for the motor mounts,,,,there's also some little rubber grommets that cushion the fuel rails and some bigger rubber things that the injectors sit in.....and belts....and i'm sure other stuff.
ideas or suggestions please post up guys.
