Hey everyone this is my first Toyota project. I must confess I'm a prior jeep owner, an I'm so over that ha. So first off I've got a couple questions. One is fj60 for SAS pros cons? I've search ih8mub an here also pirate4x4, with very little results. From what I've seen it seems like they would be stronger with the bigger diff, an also I wouldn't need wheel spacers. It's a free axle I've got at the shop.

 

Motor pulled out might just rebuild the 3.0l depending on the damage. Might do 3.4 if I can find one for the right price. Truck is stock lift in the picture. I'm still gathering parts for the SAS. I'm going with TG front hanger kit.

 

Nice looking truck, Sounds like a cool project! I don't know to much about the FJ60 front axels, I've heard that they're the same width as your IFS rear end, as you've mentioned so you wouldn't need wheel spacers, also I believe that they come in the spring under configuration so you'd have to relocate your spring perches on top of the axel. As far as crossover steering goes, I don't know if the steering arms are the same as a mini-truck, or if anyone make a high steer kit for the FJ60... have you searched in the Solid Axel Swap forum section on here? here's a link if you need it, hope you find some info, I'm kinda interested to see how this swap goes for you!

**EDIT** found this site after doing a quick search, they make high steer kit for the FJ60 axel, sounds like it can be used in both a spring over and a spring under configuration if you have at least 3.5" of lift...

Hey thanks an thx for the link most helpful. Yeah I've got a hole fj60 at the shop. Ill be gettin the axle out soon to do just that, got to have the spring over! I'm finally gettin the motor torn mostly apart. It's funny when I was setting the motor to tdc all the compression is passing the rings going into the oil pan... Lol back yard mechanic job.

 

So I found the problem with the motor. It turns out the rod bearing were shot.. I also have the fj front end ready fro clean up and the block and crank and rods ready to go to the machine shop.

 

Thefj60 is way beefy.ask kelvinb on here. He just picked one up for a swap. I personally picked it up and its way beefier than my 85 axle

 

Ya it is the 85 is a 8" an my fj60 is almost 9" it's a 8.8". And there is no need for spacers its the same length as my v6 rear end. Does anyone know of anything about 3.0l problems or what causes the head gasket problem?

 

so ive found a set of 5" lift springs for a taco for 200 new. will the fit on my truck? was goin 2 use chev 63s so the fab is not a prob

 

You can make them work, you'll probably still need to relocate your front spring mount and rear shackle mounts (assuming that the 5" lift springs are longer than your stock rear leaf springs) but you would have to do that anyway if you were going to use Chevy 63's.

If I remember correctly, I think the front spring mount for Chevy 63s are moved forward 11" from stock. If you measure those taco 5" lift spring from eye to eye to see how long they are you should be able to figure out how much you need to move your spring mounts.

 

Yeah it should be an easy lil fab job. I'm about to buy tg 3" lift spring for the front instead of the ruf. An I'm wondering what the stance would be like with the taco 5" rear lift spring. I really don't want any rake... would ya the 63's be better or closer to the same hight? It just seems that everyone's 63's are all different hight when it comes to lift

 

Seems like most people get at least 3" of lift with the 63s. If you didn't you could run a longer shackle. Or get the 5" rear springs and pull a couple leaves out if they're to tall. What's your goal with your truck, are you trying to keep the center of gravity as low as possible?

 

Seems to me from the several SAS threads I've read that the tg 3" lift springs will actually lift the front end 4" due to the new front spring hanger. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. So they may be a pretty decent match to the taco lift springs in the rear.

 

Any one know what kind of rear spring hangers I should use? I ended up having to cut one due to a seized bolt.
