That's odd... Maybe your guide hadn't broken all the way off and is holding on enough that sometimes the chain is held away from the cover. That sure is the only drawback besides the noisy SOHC head to the ole 22r series of motors. I do like it. Small, simple design, even the EFI system is simple in it. They're just slow. Which is why I wanna take the "slow" engine from a NA Supra (7m if anyone didn't know) and put it in. Hopefully I could get a MK3 out of the deal, which is great because I'm looking into getting one as a dd anyway to retire my old truck from the daily beatings. I like Toyotas, I'm poor, and choo-choo of course leads me to a mk3 supra. And I quoted slow back there because 200 horses is enough for an old 4x4 if you ask me...

Let me start this by saying my timing chain guides are good from all I can see. But, my crank pukey is very warped. Not sure it's my culprit, but it's not even in line with where the belts run so it's an issue.

Anyway, started with this.

And this looked extremely promising.

Slack side is good too.

So I put this on and put it back together.

As far as torque on the valve cover, I just hand tightened them and then did 3 turns with a wrench to where they started kind of getting tight. No big deal.

And if anything was wrong with my timing chain I missed it wouldn't be too big if a deal as I have a spare head just waiting for some valves and a torkr profile cam.

As far as my satisfaction with the 22r-e goes, I'm still thinking that depending on how the next couple of months go, I may go ahead and look into finding a 7m or 3rz if it's affordable. As much I'd like to put the fuel injected Ford 302 I have put in it, the v8 isn't good for a w56 or under hood room. Or my 4cyl diffs and blah blah blah. And sure I can upgrade that stuff, but like I said, it all depends on finances. But it looks like this truck is going to be used to pull a horse trailer with a horse (obviously) in it on 40 mile one way 80 mile round trip trips. Wow, gotta read that sentence slowly. But I know the 302 or a 1uz would be great for those situations. since the trailer is around 2500 or so for the smaller ones and then add 1000 for each horse you put in it and it gets heavy quickly. Weight wise I'm only concerned for my frame, I know the bumper can hold that much, just unsure of the old frame. But I suppose I'll just cross that bridge when I come to it.

Your frame will easily handle any load you throw at it. I am currently gathering pieces for a GM 3800 v6 swap, but I don't believe the adapter I am using would work on your W series, but I could be wrong. something to look into unless you are toyota only kind of guy. Do you have any kind of hills you have to pull over? That is the biggest factor right there on engine choice in my mind. Nice right up and good looking rig!

I'm not 100% sure if I wasn't clear or if it's what you meant, but it's the back end I'm more worried about with the frame. I assume it can handle the 4000 Toyota says it'll tow, but with a gvwr of 5100, can it not tow 5100 lbs? I just don't want to run into any issues with it.

The front frame with any engine I'm not worried about, I've seen a couple mud boggers around here with built 350's and they're all good with no real bracing on the frame.

Hills. Ehh.... Not tons around here in middle Georgia, but it's tow power I'm interested in mostly anyway. And of course some get up and go! But, and this is a big but, I want to keep my w56 which I know is going to become an issue once I get up above 230 hp or so. I know that's not a lot, but day to day it turns into a lot more than the 110 a brand new 22r-e puts out at the crank.

And I don't really want a GM engine. I'm not necessarily a purist, but if I can be, I will be. And the only non Toyota engine I would use is probably a Ford like I mentioned. I have access to a fuel injected 302 that is free if I ask for it I'm sure and only has 80k on it. But with that I'd be nervous pushing the gas unless I'm in 4th gear. Plus the gearing would give me somewhere around -3mpg. So, simply put, the engine part is well up in the air as of now. But it'll all come together eventually I'm sure. Thanks for reading and the reply! I haven't yet but I'll be sure to follow your build if it's posted on here!

Oh yeah, if no swap happens, I'll just turbo this pig. Saw some cool stuff on the turbo trucks site, don't remember the exact website, maybe 22rtetrucks or something. 340 lbft of torque is incredible!

Ya sorry the way I understood it I thought you were concerned about rust or cracks. I still don't see any issue with the frame back there. I would install a custom hitch that ties in closer to the frame and not rely on the bumper though, not sure what you have right now...

If budget is of concern, lots of guys love their turbo 4 cylinder. It really is the best way to go if you can find a used turbo, and the 22RE is bulletproof, and that W56 might surprise you at how it holds up.

My build will be in my current build thread when the time comes. I love the 3800, but I have had my fair share of issues with it, but so have I with the 3.0. Either way it is an engine and if taken proper care of will last a long time. Good luck in your engine decision! I look forward to seeing where your build goes.

Today's small update. I got to adjust some suspension and then drive my friends rsx. Sweet little car, fast too. Especially for a little 2.0l 4 cylinder.

And here's a view of my truck I've never seen. Ruling down the road. Looks good to me. I love the smitty on the back.

Enough of that, I went home and slapped these back on! FINALLY.

Yay! My aisins are back! My aisins are back! I thanked the other hubs for their service and to my extra parts bin they go!

Now the color of the truck is set off beautifully with the red on the dial. I just noticed how bland the silver middle of the other hubs really was.

So that's it for today. And the next little while. I'll try to get something done but the next thing this truck needs is just new tires. So we'll see when that happens. I'm insanely appreciative of my parents for buying the tires, but dang, the highway terrains are just so boring. I'd like something with a more aggressive look to set off the truck and better ability off-road of course. But we'll just have to see on that one. Maybe my dad will have a stroke and put km2's on it.

Just joking there guys.

Good news, black beauty is now retired from daily driving.

We're gonna let this little car handle it now. Money will be flowing into black beauty once I get a few payments made on this Celica and fix its few issues. So just bear with me a few months guys!

I like the idea of adding fogs or maybe trail lights to Black Beauty, but it'll have to be after I handle my bumper stuff. And currently I've got a medium sized credit card bill to pay down so I'll be handling that and a few payments on the Celica before anything more happens to the 4runner. Except maybe carpets. I'm planning to pull most of the interior that is in the way of that, mostly just the seats and center console, getting the carpet up, and replacing it with new marine grade stuff and maybe soundproofing.

I know the feeling on debt. I am in the same boat, but I have found some cheap mods to keep me busy and "hopefully" improve the truck until funds pop back up. Keep up the good work! You are on the right track. What is this marine grade stuff you are talking about?

Sorry, haven't been on here much lately. The marine grade stuff is really just the carpet people put on boats decks, but not the super abrasive stuff. They make some that look outstanding in cars and trucks. I'll definitely do pictures when I go buy some.

January sucked for me this year. Bottom of my radiator froze and I didn't notice until the truck had well overheated. Bye bye headgasket. But hey, I'm still okay. Got the car, right?

Wrong. Got into 2nd instead of 4th on the highway. Goodbye 2zz.

But, I'm staying positive. I'm going to get my truck running since it's cheaper to repair and I'll have to eat the car. Still owe money on it so I'm stuck with it. I'm also going to try and find another early 80's mini truck to have. No plan for the car yet but I'm working on it. I'm hoping to get another complete wrecked car with low miles and swap its guts into this one. I've got very helpful family and was even was given a car to sell. It's a wrecked mercury but it has a low mileage 5.0. I may have mentioned it before when talking about engine swap options.

We meet again

I should quit going SOOOOO long between posts. Well, let's talk a little guys.

Not really. You all know I talk through pictures. Here we go:

The issue:

The truck somewhere besides my driveway:

It took a while but it was worth it. The truck runs very well now. I'll give you guys even more pictures later. Also, I had to pull the engine to do this job. It turned out much stranger than anticipated. But pulling the engine allowed me to do a better job. And the truck now is using it's original head casting and camshaft.

Upon installation, the engine leaked oil and coolant like a sieve. It currently only leaks oil like a sieve though. My crank pulley bolt is frozen in so good the old starter trick won't break it loose. I'll probably weld a nut to the end of it it and get crazy with that thing. Because guess what?

I DUN IT AGAIN. The oil pump is the source of my oil leak....

But when I get some time and the mood hits me I'll get on it. And I'll probably put some proper Toyota red coolant in. The truck deserves it.

Anyway, thanks to anyone and everyone who reads. Hilarious that 3 posts ago basically I got a car, and now the truck is back to being my daily driver.
