86bedlesstoy's 1986 4Runner Build-Up Thread
Just purchased this 1986 4runner SR5 22re fuel injected for $300 from a co-worker. Has some minimal rust. All ready looking at the Fiberglass rear panels, 
Replacing timing chain with Dual Row from LC Engineering. First serious engine work before. Not a newbie though. After being told I was going to pay a sum of $1,200 -- $2,000 I decided to order the kit and do it myself. Here is what you get. Pictures coming

Have everything removed other than timing cover and crank pulley. Set the TDC when I take the valve cover gasket.
WHY IS EVERYBODY SCARIED FOR THE BUMP THE STARTER IDEA. DID MINE WITH ALL THE BELTS AND ALL THAT STUFF ON. 5TH GEAR AND 4LO WITH CLUTCH CANCEL "ON". AFTER ABOUT 4 TRIES IT CAME RIGHT OFF!

Might help the engine was "rebuild" only 50k ago! And it needs a timing chain! Looks like not everybody rebuilds the engine the way they should! Pictures coming!

Thanks Twisted. I was about to get it done at my house. Oil pan removal and all. Installed Dual Row timing chain ($400) from LC. Now I have a leak at the top of my head. Oil mostly. Think it is the cover or my head gasket? Been trying to find out! HELP. Should I just take the head off and do a head gasket as well?!

Replacing a head gasket isnt too bad of a job. The way it sounds you arent to confident in the previous rebuild. Oil leaking from the front? Could be the "D" seal on front, Valve cover gasket, or they didnt put any sealant on inbetween the timing chain cover and head. I would be tempted to rebuild the top end unless you feel everything else is ok.

Lord....how I hate people that do things half a$$. Anyways man, I know that I began doing a timing chain job on my truck about a month and a half ago and after I got everything pulled off but the timing cover, I realized the head would need to be pulled in order to do the job right. I did read/hear somewhere that you can just drop the pan to do get the timing cover off, but I have an authentic Toyota service manual and when you look up how to replace the timing chain, first step is : PULL THE HEAD. Im all about doing things right the first time (mostly cuz I dont want to do the job again....) Ill keep an eye out for this post man. Good luck and ask any/all questions man.

I did everything right other than the RTV on the head at the chain cover. Think that is where the leak is. Feel stupid I missed that step in my replacement!

Lucky I'm only in about $800 in parts and vehicle purchase! Thanks to a co-worker with a new JK JEEP.. "I laughed under my breath.." Anyways. Has a slight stumble while driving.

Have a chance for some BFG KM2 Mud Terrain 30x9.50 at $104.99 a piece! Ha. I think a miss print on the 4 wheel parts website. I'm sticking with it and ordering them because of the great deal. Along with my head gasket kit from NAPA. Not going to remove the intake manifold. At least try not to! Think of a header install as well! Any thoughts on the head gasket install. Looks like about 5 wires to unplug and some vacuum hoses. Header was well of course!

Price was to go to be true. Told me they wouldn't honor the ad on there website because of a tech mess up. BS! Big oil puddle under the vehicle when I went to leak work today. Head Gasket in back seat!

Removed mud flaps and front valance. Well front valance removed it's self when I got stuck in this bug mud hole. Additional help thanks to an angle grinder! Working on my brothers 96' Tacoma installing a 3" spacer and block lift kit. Replacing ALL ball joints as well while I'm in there.

LC Engineer has had their last order from me.. I ordered my new head bolts on last thursday. Shipped out 7/13 and won't be arriving till 7/18. UGH! Anyways here is a picture of my runner stuck on a local trail in Summit County.

Glad to see you in a Yota again! You can take the head off with the intake still attached. Thats how I always take mine off. Its way easier and you dont have to buy another gasket.
