Well, I think we found the problem. Seems like one of the "rebuilt" injectors we bought is stuck open, This was determined by jumping terminals, turning ignition switch ON (not starting car) and running fuel pump. You could hear one injector running (could not determine exactly which one. Got some more injectors coming. Will let you know how it turns out.

Excellent! I can’t wait to see your next fuel economy report!

Well, life and Covid has slowed things down but expect to get on track in a week or so. Chris sent in his old injectors that we did not use for the rebuild to be cleaned and rebuilt. Hopefully, when Chris gets back we will install the new injectors and get a fuel consumption report and video out to those interested.

great! I’m taking this work from home time to send my injectors out for rebuild locally and plan to post on it also.
Some background...when I was putting the engine together, I got to the point of installing the fuel log and upper manifold. Problem was I needed a set of injectors to continue and the old engine was still in the 4runner. I convinced Chris to spring for a set of rebuilt injectors. When I got them, they looked sad, but I installed them anyway. They were terribly pitted, but had new o-rings and seals. There was no "report" on flow rates. I should have stopped there. ALL of them leaked, especially number 4 and this caused the awful gas mileage. Reading the spark plugs told the story. They all passed the resistance test, but I did not leak test them. While the car started and ran great, soon the soot was coming out of the tailpipe and the fuel smell was awful. I hope we didn't hurt the nearly new catalytic converter.
We sent the injectors from the old engine to Mr. Injector in Idaho. Turnaround was quick, and we installed them yesterday. The injectors looked beautiful. They were expertly painted black and looked brand new. Accompanying them was a copy of a professional report, with before and after data, spray pattern info and percentage improvement. They not only looked new, they tested new. The engine runs great!. No more black soot coming out the tailpipe along with black condensation.
Hopefully, Chris and I will get out on a road trip in a few days and do a detailed gas mileage report which I have promised quite awhile ago, but I am certain we discovered the problem and corrected it.
Chris claims this engine never ran as smoothly or quietly. We balanced the rotating assembly and set the valve lash at a snug .007 Intake/.011 exhaust. This has been a very satisfying build and hope you all enjoyed this thread and thank you for your comments and following along.
Don't know if you saw it, but the "rebuilt" injectors we bought and installed were bad. All leaked. If you send your injectors in, make sure they provide a report with before and after results as well as a leak test result. The first set of injectors did not provide a test report. In addition to terrible fuel mileage, the smell of gas from throttle body with air tube removed was powerful. When we removed the upper intake, fuel was pooled in the lower intake. we sent the original set of injectors into Mr Injector in Idaho. They came back beautifully cleaned painted and tested. The report was complete and professional. Mr Injector will not rebuild an injector if it does not pass a leak test. The initial 60 mile highway trip after the injector replacement resulted in 22.5 mpg. Yeah! I will take a picture of the report and post it soon.
When we changed out injectors, we decided to replace the IAC which I had rebuilt. We did this because we were not getting high idle after a cold start. The new IAC fixed this and cold start idle is 1200 rpm and as engine warms slows to normal hot idle. Prior to install, we examined both IACs. I had misadjusted the old IAC by quite a bit. Correct adjustment and the old IAC should fix it but leaving the new one in. I will post a good picture of where the adjusting nut should be set soon.
in spite of the little problems we have been facing, it has been fun correcting each little issue. Engine runs awesome. Next is adjustment of the dashpot, since this is a manual transmission. This is important to pass California emissions. Without a correct adjustment, engine will fail sniff test on throttle down due to rich mixture on throttle plate closing resulting in high hydrocarbons.

i had mine done recently by a Massachusetts guy and the results were great. Have not tried a gas mileage run yet. But around town, it appears to be using less fuel.
