Quadracing04's 85 X-cab pickup build thread --Project River Runner

Well here is where it all starts, i was looking for something to build up and take out around all the old school trails along the river that no body has been on in years and just enjoy the day, find new fishing and camping spots and just get away from the city. So the search began and i found this, it an 85 with a bran new rebuilt motor. The guy said he could not keep it running unless it was hooked to another vehical (jump start). So 500 bucks, a test light, a charged battery and 4 hours later i have a running truck. All it was was a bad ground on the alternator, go that fixed and it started up first turn of the key and i took it out for a cruz, and it hasnt died since.

so here is my build thead, got suspension on the way, a new set of 35" BFG KM1's and a wish list a mile long. tomorrow i plan on going through everything and see what other surprises might be hiding and as the parts come in my new TOY will be getting dressed to impressed.

Hope y'all enjoy.

Thank everyone,

Well i had to work some overtime so i didnt get off in time to do much, only thing i got accompliched was installing a direct power relay system to the head light to get rid of that crappy low power yellow look. But tomorrow is another day and my new toy will be getting some much needed TLC, all new fluids, spark plugs, airfilter......all the goodies of a good tune up.

The guys around here have built some amazing rigs, I probably spent more time reading up on all of yalls rigs more then working on mine. But you guys have given me a lot of build ideas that are gonna make this project into exactly what I want.

Mad props to all you rig builders, you have some amazing creations.

Been stuck on the same problem for the last 2 days, the altenator will only charge 12.5 volts. i put a brand new one in and it is still putting out the same. any ideas on what it could be?

check for a short in the wiring. also run the truck with the wire that go's from the altenator to the battery off and check the voltage out of the altenator only.

Try running the engine then disconnect the battery, if the engine stops then the alternator is not putting out.

If it still runs, then check the voltage should be about 13.5 to 15 volts

Ordering gears and locker(s) today, rear one for sure, but which one I pick will determine if I get both front and read. What do y'all think about the Spartan locker????

Both of your 3rds are 8". IFS front diffs (starting in '86) are where you get into the 7.5" ring gear.

Thanks, I wanted to double check before I finished ordering my gears, I thought it was an 8" , just had that second thought and wanted to make sure.

It was a actually more then just one thing i think, first the power wire from the altentator to the fuse box was old and basically falling apart. and then the ground from the altenator was not in the best of shape either, I found all this out then i pulled the + of the batter and the truck just died. so i replaced both of those and actually had all the fuses in the shop to just go ahead and change all the them out just in case one didnt have a good contact. once all that was done it worked 100% better. but it still is not enough to power anything more then what the truck has stock, so i went ahead and ordered the bracket to install a GM 1 wire. so i can now put on a 130 amp for free (perk of knowing people in the right place).

Think I am just going to stick with my 22RE and just do the stacked tranfercases 2.28 and 4.70. When i bought the truck it came with 2 spare transmisions and a spare transfer case to i am just going to do a good build up with one of the spare trannys and the tranfer case, got to get the 4.70 gears for one of them tho.
