Just messin with ya, Chris.... MOSTLY, as I said.... But honestly just anxious to watch this thing come together, ya know?

Hey mark the lack of pics is my fault lol, by the time we got done I just wanted to close the shop up and call it a day.
I thought chris might do a better job of explaining more about what we acomplished but I guess I will. First thing though I want give terry a big thank you for all the extra parts he has sent my way with out his help none of the projects Im involved in we be as far along as they are. Ok so the buckets seats are from a 4runner that terry parted out I got them to put in my 86 but have found a matching set of front and rears for it so I told chris if he wanted these we would put them in his truck. After removing the bench seat and vacuming up what seemed like 40 pounds of acorns we started with the drivers seat I was amazed it bolted right in, the pasenger side is were the fun started terry told one of the mounting feet was gone but he gave me aspare set of tracks thank god becouse the 4 runner tracks were no where close but with some grinding and welding and cutting and more welding and some cursing on my part we got them both in. I also had a spare counsol again from terry so we started trying to fit that but didnt get it done. The seats are blue the counsol grey and his interior is brown so he will have to figure out how he wants to match it all up dut it looks good better than the bench and more comfy to.
The bigger news is chris finaly got a full time job so after he pays me and his mom back all the the $$$$ he owes us this project should realy take off lol.
One more thing after we changed the oil and probably before the engine is leaking oil from the rear main area Im afraid so that little problem will have to be addressed asap, Im guessing the best way to do is to just pull the engine, but if you guys know a better way let me know, Im also thinking new clutch unless the one thats in there looks realy good. Things will be getting done soon as he realy needs his own dependable transportation now. Thanks for stoping by and I will try and get some pics up asap.

You sure the Clutch is good? IMHO that is CRUCIAL "get it done while in there" maintenance...... AND, might as well do the input shaft seal while there, as well(very common cause for early bearing failure, from what a Trans Tech told me... He said, when I told him about this post and how old the rig was, etc....."When I have an old one like this, especially with a leaking rear main, I can bet the Trans and t-case seals are about to go too... So, with a leak there, in the input shaft seal/gasket, which is RIGHT AGAINST those trans bearings at the front...the leaking area can pull in air and harden things a bit... it doesn't pour out, just usually leaks to whereit's got ENOUGH gear oil, but not LOTS, just enough to not grenade the trans. The rear shaft to T-case seal is also a common one to leak. If you pull the check-fill on the t-case and it POURS out, way more than it should.... that seal in back is the culprit! This is when I just pull toy trans's and t-cases and give em new seals on the ends/pinions at least, rear output shaft seal, front input shaft seal and gasket.... then do the clutch and pilot and throwout kit while in there... Which is when you can EASILY get to the Rear mains... Tell him to do a Marlin kit on the shifter bushings, too, while the trans is down or maybe even after(which I find easier while it's in)".......

Just thought I'd share FWIW, ya know? He does these for 30 years... All he does. Just too far to help me out, ya know? hahahaha.

GREAT WORK, guys... And Chris, ... PICS AND VIDEO, MAN! hahaha, Just razzin ya Great job, seriously.

Hey mark, yep on everything lol. The clutch was seased when he first got it just rusted up I would guess none the less now it chatters awful bad when it engages not to mention if that main has been leaking long Im sure the disk is soaked so a new clutch is on the list, Im not sure he can afford the same kit I got for my runner but I think even a parts store one is better than whats in there now. As far as the seals Im with ya might as well change em for the most part they"re cheap and cheap insurance so thats on the list as well. The fun stuff will come but the necesitys are first.

Hello Jason.. Yours being a carb motor is easier to pull then a EFI, I would suggest just pulling the whole motor to get to that leak. If that was just it then maybe not. I just dont care to have to work on the back of a motor. When it is out, you can make sure you get it well and fix any other leak as well. Doing the rear seal is a pleaure out of the truck, not so much when it is in there.

Hello Chris.. Talking to your dad, I know you guys have alot more work in then what is mentioned. Dont take this the wrong way, but even getting all of the acorns and the welding involved to get the seats in, was a lot of work. Take pictures so when someday you get your truck done you can look back and see what all you did accomplish. I wouldnt even keep the pics for me or your dad but for yourself.

Wish I would of know of Yotatech when I started on these trucks. It is a good way to keep a record of what all was done. Not just in the end results of the truck but the even how you have progressed in skills. If you could seen me when I first started on these trucks, I didnt know my rear from a hole in the ground.

Several of my trucks were JUNK and I got compliments on them when done. They looked like a well taken care of used truck that I bought, which was far from the truth. You will enjoy looking back at where you started, and when it is done, it is hard to believe it was ever in the shape that it was in.

Cleaning and repairing isnt near as exciting as all of the high dollar add ons, but has to be done and you will be glad you did. It will get there, just keep at it when you can. Looking better each time. Great job.

well we were able to get the truck legal the other day Im not letting him drive it much untill the leak is took care of but we have both drove it to town a couple times the little truck runs great except for a dead spot just off idle that makes it a little hard to get moveing as well as shift but it moves down the road great. need to replace the shifter bushing and still need to fix the brakes but it will get there.
one thing I noticed was the 4x4 light flicking in the dash anybody got any ideas on that one? also the steering seems a little stiff so I will have to check into that. changed a headlight in it and discovered either more hack job work or that in 84 toyota used sheet rock screws to hold the grill in ugh. thanks for checking in guys I still havent remembered to take any pics of the seat/consoul install by I will get them asap.

4WD flickering, .... my guess is the wiring/connector/in that realm on the 'connector that goes around the trans from the harness in the engine bay'... mine looks like this.....

They ^^^ can back out, the pins can.... Mine did that on my TTTS on the Thermostat housing.

Far as the steering... Eeek.... My first guess would be the pump(IF IT'S EVEN POWER STEERING???? ) , but often, when sitting long time, especially in eastern weather it seems.... The G-Box can start to turn on ya... Heck, they can turn on ya anyway, lol. I would know, right? lol. Make sure you use Dextron3 ATF(IF IT'S POWER STEERING... not sure if not if it takes that) ......... And flush that out, anyhow, ya know? Can't hurt. Also check your linkage for binding. I know the SFA rigs are different, more push-pull... but check it anyway, right? haha.

PS> That pic might be my reverse lights plug... But it's one of those, ya know? I can't remember which one was white/if both were, but the 4WD one, IIRC, is larger.

LOL on the sheetrock screws. PO used the wrong material, its bailing wire unless that was a change Toyota did between 84 and 88. Thats what mine had.

thanks for the reply mark, Im thinking on the steering that the knuckles probably need gone thru I will have to do some research on what that involves hoping it wont be to bad we shall see. the rear main and clutch will have to come first tho so I have time.

terry what is the deal are all vehicles that are almost 30 years old this cobbled together or just our toyotas? I meen I do my share of jerry rigging but good lord.

I just dont get it either. Alot of the rigging I see would take as much time to do it right as the disaster they cause. I kid you not, I went thru a whole roll of shrink wrap on the 85. Ideally I would like to replace the harness that they butchered up, but finding one is going to be a pain in the rear. I do the splice, solder, and shrink wrap, which is as about as good as you can get without replacing. Just dont get it.

I think Mark is right on your 4WD light. I get the reverse light and tcase wire confused as well. Just for good measure, I would suggest where and when possible to seperate and hit the contacts with an electric grease or something. Currently I am using WD-40 to help with better connectivity and keep the plugs a little more easier to work with. The pins I have been working with lately have a lot of corrosion on them. I have started doing that when ever I get into something electrical as standard procedure for myself.

I see you are going to be working on the knuckles. Mine has leaks as well and this will be a new experience for me. I have found a few videos and need to find where I put them. I will look for more and add them to Chris's thread.

I am going to post on my thread about the freebies and cheapies later, but if Chris is chomping at the bit, there are plenty of things that will need done for cheap, (a wire brush on a drill) and freebie using things he may have on hand already like changing the 1984 brake fluid that is most likely still in it.

On your rear main seal, if I recall right, pulling a 22r is alot easier then a 22re. Other then bell housing bolts, just the fuel lines, throttle linkage, radiator hoses and coil is all there is to one. I am sure I missed something but cant be much. I just dont care to work on that part of the motor in the truck.

LOL...I thought that was funny. I am a little worried about it though, but will jump in with both feet. I think I will a day for one of his minutes and still not sure if that will be enough. We will see soon enough though.

Well since chris has a long weekend off from work and I should havea few days at home the plan is to pull the engine clean it up a bit and replace the leaking rear main as well as the clutch pressure plate and fly wheel. I'm hoping to have it done in a day so he can drive it over the weekend some and maybe start driving it to work. We will just have to see how it goes. Oh and by the way HAPPY BIRTHDAY SON.

well we didnt get started as early as I had wanted but we were able to get the engine out. I need to express my amazment at the hack work that some people do, this truck has had a clutch put in it not many miles ago it still in pretty good shape how ever the job they did installing it makes me wonder, where do I start well I guess first would be the bell houseing bolts or rather the lack there of because there were only 2 yes 2 bolts in the houseing, lets see next would be the half inch standard bolt in the starter instead of the stud and nut that should have been there, but the big find was that the rear main is not leaking after all. the oil pan has been caved in at some point and for some reason they globed all over that area, I guess that explains the welding done on the the drain plug. the pan was replaced with a new gasket with not a speck of sealant on it so it was leaking as well oh and the missing pan bolts pobably didnt help.
any way I guess I will rob the pan off the engine for the 83 I got from terry, put the new rear main in since the engine is out any way, try and round up some bell houeing bolts and try and get it back together.
ok time for some pics.

almost ready to come out

on its way out

removeing the clutch etc

and this one comes with a question if you look close at the right side of the pic you can see stuff packed in the cavaties in the back of the block. the stuff is clutch material some peices are an inch or so long. Im wondering how it got in there as the area is covered by the engine plate and the fly wheel. anybody seen anything like this?

I will try and clean the pan up tomorow and get some pics of the damage and anything else I think is pic worthy. thanks for checking in guys.

Happy late birthday Chris. Enjoyed talking to you. Hope this weekend treats you guys well. Just like Billy Clinton, I feel your pain, on the butchered up job on the oil pan. Any more, nothing surprises me on these trucks. No idea on how that got behind the flex plate.

Will check in later to see how things are going. Wishing you guys the best of luck.

well new oil pan installed and engine back in and running [thanks for the help on the phone terry]. wound up with an exaust leak as one of the manifold bolts is stripped so I guess I will get to learn how to do a heli coil but other wise everything seems good. I tried to take some pics of the bad spot in the oil pan but they just wont turn out, Im almost positive the damage came from the pumkin contacting the pan or sombody doing a crappy job trying to clerance the pan to fit because Im also sure that pan is either a 2wd pan or car pan but definitly not the pan for this truck.
I also decided while they were easier to get to I would remove the EGR plumbing [this is where the exaust leak came from] for block off plates I just cut the tubeing off used a few bolt heads as plugs a welded them in place.

if you look close you can see the PO just cut the pipes and then crimped the ends shut

the plates welded up and ready to go back on

the truck still has a long way to go but its gonna be a solid little truck when done and chris is learning a lot becouse Im letting him do most of the work, ok maybe thats just becouse Im lazy but it sounds good.

chris has been wanting to take the truck out and just play a little bit so this morning we went down the road to run a few power line trails. other then a little dead spot in the carb the truck did good for its first time in the dirt. we didnt get carried a way just drove around the woods a little but it gave chris an idea of what to exspect.

just a couple pics

flexing it out a little

thanks for checking in guys.
