1985 xtra cab pickup!

new to the forum! just picked up my first yota!
1985 xtra cab with a 22re
158,000 miles
ac still blows cold!
warn hubs, fj60 front brake setup
burns oil, and has a coolant leak that i will be fixing here soon, other than that its fairly clean, except for the pass side rear fender but i have some buddies pretty good with body work, hopefully ill get it straight and painted!
plans for it are:
take these bumpers off and make tube bumpers, and sliders
tube doors
lift with 33s
maybe a rear locker
white paint
window tint
led bars

heres pics of how it sits now.

Welcome to YotaTech, Nice looking truck! That's pretty low mileage, looks like its in really good shape, I love the x-cabs, gotta get me one someday! Sounds like you have some good plans for it, you might want to eventually find yourself a set of stock Aisin locking hubs, they'll perform alot better than the Warns. I like the looks of the front bumper, it looks really beefy, does it have a winch mount?

Look forward to seeing your build!

I like the look of your truck. Just ship your old bumpers to me in Florida, I'll take care of them.

sorry all no real updates as money has become real tight, i pulled the motor a couple months ago ready to rebuild it with all oem toyota internals, cam, and some other little upgrades but the motor is currenty sitting in pieces in my garage still lol. my buddy pulled his 22r out of his truck thinking he blew it up but i went through it and he had cracked the head and the timing chain guides broke as well as a couple pieces on the inside of the timing cover. im taking his block and swapping all my parts over to it since the pistons and cylinder walls look great still. gonna do a quick hone and throw everything together, i just got done lapping the valves and putting new stem seals in my head. new water pump timing chain and guides, oil pump as well. my block had some pretty good scores in it so im just gonna save tht away for when i have some money to maybe build a sweet high compression motor. oh and the reason i tore the motor down was because it was using about 2 qts of oil about every week. and getting so bad it was fouling the plugs. when i took the old valve stem seals out they practically fell apart im guessing they were a big part of using so much oil! anyway she should be running soon and ready for some other fun mods...new list of things to do are...
ifs crossover steering swap
new wheels with 33s
some sort of lift for the front (ideas welcome) was thinking maybe wagoneers
63s for the rear

What year is the block of his 22r? If it is too early heads/pistons may be incompatible. The cut off is around 83/84'ish

Yeah I checked the books at work and I'm good. His book is an 87. Thanks though!
Hopefully I'll have the motor in the truck tonight. I need a radiator so I won't be able to Fire It up until I get one. I will post some pics tonight.

so pissed at myself tonight, while installing the timing cover i used too long of a bolt on the top bolt of the oil pump and after installing the accessories and stuff right as i was installing the distributor i noticed that the timing chain didnt look right, pointed my flashlight down the cover and sure enough that bolt pushed the timing chain slightly off the bottom gear enough to let the tensioner be in the way and now im stuck with pulling the front cover again!! ugh
is there a way to do this without removing the oil pan and head?? i sealed the oil pan with fipg

ok now that ive pulled the oil pan, pulled the timing cover, re set the timing chain, i can not get the chain to sit right on the marks. its like the damn thing keeps skipping a tooth or something i have no idea what im doing wrong and im definitely frustrated for the night, gonna have one of the mdt's at work come over tomorrow and help me figure it out and hopefully get the whole motor back together..goal is to have the truck running by monday. we will see how that goes lol here are some pics of how i had the timing chain on, looks correct doesnt it?

so its timed, everything is together and its sitting in the truck
need to get a hose that goes from the intake manifold to the heater pipe, and figure out what i want to do with the egr.
can i just put this in and cap off the vacuum line?

Another EGR trick is to trim a piece of aluminum can to act a a blocking plate then mount it back on, looks functional.

So got everything in and hooked up. It wouldn't start. Sprayed brake parts cleaner in the throttle body and then it ran for like 30 secs but the idle wouldn't come up. Fuel is getting to the filter, and it looks as if the fuel filter was replaced recently since it's all shiny and new lol. Im sure fuel is getting to the rail. Any way I could have maybe mixed up the fuel injector clips? How would I know? And I have not quite yet messed with ignition timing. Any input appreciated thanks!

Like muddpigg suggested. I have tried other ways of removing or trying to stop the EGR from functioning and usually just causes problems. A blocking plate has never caused me any issues.

There really is no way of getting the injectors mixed up as the length is fairly close to where they need to be. Seems to me even if you did get two of them backwards one would not reach the other. If there is a screw up to be done, I have probably done it.

Have you done the fuel pump jumper to see if fuel is flowing thru the fuel rail? All vacuum lines need to be correct and timing set for it to fire up. A screw up I did not long ago was putting fuel into the intake to see if it would fire up and it did until it ran out of fuel. After that it would not even trying running. Once I installed the computer it fired right up, Doh!!!
