1984 long bed single cab

Hey yota tech been hanging around for a couple months now. Bought a 98 tacoma back in April and had some plans on building that for little wheeling daily driving. Well recently my girlfriend purchased a 84 pickup. So now the plans have changed to build the 84 and keep the taco mainly stock and reliable. This build will be pretty slow but the plans as of right now are to lift the truck with chevy springs and ruf. Geared and armor the truck. Defiantly gonna be a build on a budget seeing that we are both poor snowboard bums that live on the East side of the sierras.

I use to own samurais back in highschool and messed around on some rocks and in the woods with them. Had a good friend that helped me a lot with those so this will be my first real attempt at building something myself.

Anyways on to the truck. We picked up the 84 single cab long bed from a friend that was selling it here in town(mammoth lakes) for $800. Truck is pretty clean with just some minor rust on the hood. Truck does need a new trans. So we went on the hunt for a w56 to make an improvement over the original g52. Truck has $160k. After digging around CL with no luck tried a P n P in Reno and decided not to take the one we pulled from the truck in the yard due to return policy. After a couple weeks of looking the guy we bought the truck from his 87 4runner had some electrical problems so he is selling us his w56 and parting out the runner.

As soon as I figure out how to post picture I will.

Out with the old and in with the new tomorrow. Pulling the g52 and putting a w56 trans from a 87 4runner. Also doing some sanding to remove some minor surface rust.

New trans in the truck with every thing buttoned up. Just ordered a optima yellow top and some new spark plug wires. Once I get it running I will be doing changing all of the fluids in the truck.

Finally got around to covering up the larger hole that had to be cut into the tunnel after installing the w56. Don't have any pictures of the hole but basically I followed the original shape and extended the opening by 4".

So to make a cover I used an old road sign I had laying around. After cutting to fit the opening shape with some extra lip to put self tapping screwing into. I then cut holes for the shifters. After a couple time of fitting I screwed the plate into place.

I then cut apart the old rubber boot to fit. Since the shifter are further apart now the original one didn't fit. One from a top shift trans probably would but used what I had. Then screwed the rubber boots down(put the screws under the folds to keep out of sight. Think it all turned out pretty good.

Next my girlfriend will be sewing up a faux alligator leather boot to hide it all.

Today after work finished up the bed platform that the previous owner had started to make.

The two sides were already made. So I got some ply wood and some 2x4 and finished it up. Turned out pretty good. Made the whole thing so it can be removed quickly and easily.

The 2x4s are stuck in place by 2piece of ply wood on each side wedging it in.

Pics are not showing up. I can see them if I click on the links but nobody want to take the time to do that. Looks like u got some good things going on but figure out how to post pics and feedback should pick up a bit. Also 84-85 section doesn't have as much traffic as the other years for some reason.

Hope these show up. If not might need some help. I am posting everything off of my iPhone.

Well we are starting to get some snow so I took the truck out for a little spin. Drove up laurel lakes road here in town. It's nothing crazy but was able to take a couple side lines that were fun. Truck handled everything great. I did manage to rip off the plastic corner on the front bumper. Oh well plans for a new bumper soon hopefully. Also had momma bear and three cubs in the parking lot yesterday.

So haven't gotten a whole lot done recently. I did total my tacoma a couple weeks back when someone backed out their driveway without looking.

Anyway I did finally get around to replacing the original dead seat belts. Got some new one from the interwebs for about $180 for everything. Also went ahead and replaced all the hardware while I was at it since most of them were stripped.

Yea a bumper is on the list. Would've got one last night when I placed an order from marlin and got free shipping but they were out of stock. Also marlins site doesn't day that it works for a 84. I wanna get it running strong before I'm too concerned with cosmetics.

So not sure if I have figured out how to post the pictures.

Anyways little bit of an update I just ordered about $2g worth of parts. Most of it for a desmog and some performance parts. I will be following kawazx636 thread on how to desmog a 22r. Really well writen thread and very detailed.

I have ordered from LC Engineering a weber 32/36 manual choke paired with a dual plane intake manifold. The direct fit header and the complete desmog kit.

From marlin crawler I ordered their performance front brake upgrade. Knuckle rebuild kit. Full face diff guard. Axle truss.

I will soon be ordering the rear disc brake convention and probably a trans brake.

Bumpers/sliders and as is some kind of lift will come in the future. Oh yea and some gears and lockers. I'm sure there will be more added to the list as we go.
