While working on the back half. I wanted to paint the fuel tank. Decided while I had it out may as well as check the float and see what rust was like in the tank. Glad I did.

The float was frozen solid. I put the rust dissolver on it and had it working in 2 minutes. I am really starting to like this brand over PB Blaster. Here it is frozen up with rust. Fuel filter is hard as a rock also.

Cleaned up.

Reference pictures for reassembly.

I had to clean the pickup line as well. I have cleaned tanks before. Found some ways on the web. I am going to use vinegar for a few days and then coat it with Red Coat. Did this on my 88 and worked out great.

Got the spare tire carrier soaking and getting it cleaned up to go back on. Seen someone at one time made a thread on preventive maintainace on the spare tire carrier.

Different links to cleaning a fuel tank.

http://www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Removi...rom_a_gas_tank

http://www.ehow.com/how_4540637_remo...-gas-tank.html

http://www.vjmog.com/ftopict-3687.html

These are just some I have found. I did the vinegar and it turned it to a powder and then I coated it with Red Kote. I will let it soak a few days in vinegar. To bad i cant get a good pic of before and after. It works really good.

GREAT pic of your lil guys, man! Awesome that they like it, rather than whining cuz they'd rather be on the Cell or texting Susie....OH, WAIT, that's coming soon! hahahaha. JK, ....i have girls, so of course, I've had different battles to wage, lol. But, I have to say, they DID offer and then help me quite a bit...and they both can do their own maintenance when it's needed.

REALLY good to see it coming this close, buddy! KILL IT! lol.

Thanks Chef..lol.. we wanted a girl, just didnt work out. One day we plan to adopt one. I hear girls are a whole different battle. Boys you get to spend time in the emergency room because of their daredevilness, but I hear girls get just as expensive in other ways. They all grow quicker then you think.

I got the tank soaking. Will let it soak for a few days and give it a good rinsing. Funny thing is, alot of this is quite similar to my 88 restore.

Got a call from the machine shop today. My head is done and just needed a little resurfacing. I will go pick it up tomorrow. Now just get all of my parts on order and with a little luck, maybe I could hear this thing in a couple of weeks. I have high hopes but not sure if the funds are there to be that quick.

I need to get the horseshoe water pipe and find what else I need to convert a Celica motor to a truck motor. I have the 4WD pan, and am guessing a flywheel wont interchange.

Did get the tire carrier cleaned up and now can turn it with my fingers.

I was all excited about how the day was going to turn out. I got my head back and gasket kit and was ready to go to work. Not going to happen. I dont have a FWD Oil pickup tube. I do have a pan, so guess that is good. I was hoping to get the motor together.

I thought all I really needed was a timing chain and I could have this thing in one piece motor wise. I will try and get to the bone yard tomorrow and see what they have. I have done 5 of these and could get it block and head in one piece if everything went right in a day or so.

I have a new oil pump and water pump in the shed. Urrgh!!! One part is holding up the show. Been really busy but have done alot of cleaning on the motor and other parts. Not the most exciting thing but has to be done. I am not going to tear down the bottom end as it seems to check out ok.

I spent about twice as much today as I have on the whole truck. I am keeping tabs of what this truck is going to cost to build. I really feel that since I am doing 90% of the work myself, it will be surprising. I am not out any cost money wise for this truck, but I have spent a ton on elbow grease which I have plenty of. Been helping a friend do his, so I am not out any for the truck itself. Just everythig else.lol..

I am really kicking my self in the butt for not buying a mechanical fuel pump when I bought the Celica. I bought it for the tranny for $200 and was wanting the motor for some future use. Someone had replaced the timing chain in it. The oil pan was sealed up great. It was the timing cover and valve cover gasket that was leaking so bad.

Figured I would see about what I plan on spending on this project. Just to give an idea. This should make it a fun, dependable daily driver. Dont think I will be too far off. Just have to wait and see. I am guessing less then $2000. It wont happen over nite as other priorities. I did this on my 88 and went over budget by a few hundered( still need seats and AC on it). I went back and added actual cost where I could.

Truck................................Free, trading out work.
Motor................................Bought along time ago. So not considering cost and wanted tranny.
Head work..........................$119
Paint............. ...................$250,Previous projects cost.
Bodywork material...............$100, still have some from previous projects.(25 so far)
Timing Chain.......................$60 normally around here.
Pickup tube........................$?
Clutch...............................$150
Tires................................$200 Craigslist?
Rims.................................Free for now. I have some stock ones in shed.
Complete Tune up...............$125
Tranny/Tcase....................$Free, I have them.
Seats...............................$Boneyard Buckets that are nice.
Right Fender......................$?.. Criagslist.
Shocks.............................$150
Brakes/Front end.................$??
Frame shop........................$300 or free. I have access to a frame.
Carpet..............................$120
Stereo..............................$200
Miscellaneous/dashpad/??.....$300
Fix Gas tank............................$75 (Vineagar 20 so far Red Kote-)
Rattle can paint ( 25 so far)
Flywheel resurfaced $15...............Done

I would still be at 2000 in mine if I wouldn't have had to buy a new head...so Im looking at about 35-4500 for my build.....

Hello dirtdobber...As my 88 sits now I have less then 3300 into right now. Which I have parts from other trucks that I have done and I did part out a rusted up runner. When we sent it off for scrap, literally there was nothing left on it. I just did the top end on it and have 28,000 miles on it but still would take it coast to coast if I could afford the gas.

We have an 01 Runner and it has been sitting alot, runs great and everything. The 88 is just fun to drive. Just wish it had cruise control which it will get in the future.

Motor and paint alone can get expensive, but with the motor I just do a top end rebuild and just know in the back of my mind that there maybe a time when I might have to do a whole rebuild. The quicker I can get it on the road the quicker I can enjoy it. I get mine in to rolling projects and start from there.

Hopefully I can show you how to get the cost down some on with this build. It wont be a show truck and have all of the high dollar lifts, bumpers, and doodads, but will be a nice looking stocker that I will trust to drive.

As with my 88, the way I look at it, it would of been really hard to get a dependable used truck for the 3260 I have in it now and I enjoyed that I did it my self. It was in BAD shape when I got it. I could sell it around here for the price I got into it now easy.

Got the fly wheel sent off to have it resurfaced and will pick it up tomorrow or Saturday. Got the block cleaned and ready to start putting back together.

The oil sending unit isnt wanting to come out so I am letting it soak in some PB Blaster. I did a SR5 guag swap one time and had one to break off inside the oil port. Dont want to do that again.

From what I am understanding, the Celica flywheel is the same for the truck as the car so lucked out on that. The motor mounts appear to be the same so may have lucked out on that too. I will verify part numbers just to make sure.

I am going to reassemble the block minus the oil pan and oil pick up tube. Just got to go and check all of my torque specs and do a refresher on what sealants I need and so on.

Checked on my fuel tank. It is starting to get some shiny spots in there. Another day or so and think it will be done. I will try and get some pics. Then I will get some coating for the tank and get it on the truck.

Feels like I am fianlly making some progress. But that is the way it goes for me, I make big steps and then little or no steps.

I forgot about having these rims on my parts truck. May clean them up or paint them.
