Hello, I've been a member on here for a while now, I'm 19 and I own 2 Toyota 4x4's, a 1990 4Runner and a 1982 Longbed Pickup. Since I've been doing so much work on it lately and being a novice at everything vehicle related, I decided a build thread would be in order!

Most of you won't find this very exciting, I'm doing this mostly for input and to keep track of what I've done. My funds are low but my aspirations are high for this truck, so expect mostly small cheap mods.

So here he is, $700 and a 2 hour ferry ride and it was all mine. Ran great, only issue was that it didn't reverse, but the gentleman was kind enough to give me a working tranny with it.

 

My first order of business was rust prevention. I cleaned, sanded, primed with rust reformer, and undercoated all of the frame I could get to. I also gave the front bumper a new Hammered Black Finish

Next I decided the hubs could use some maintenance, so I rebuilt them and painted them to match my truck.

 

While I was at it I decided to clean up and paint the shocks (can't afford new ones right now)




Also bought myself a sticker

 

Next was the interior, I wanted to make the interior as nice as possible, keeping it mostly original, but something I definitely wanted to do was bedline the floor.



I removed the seats, steamcleaned them, repainted the center console and the plastic by the doors, along with the gauge cluster above the shifter.



I bought some cheapo walmart bedliner and sprayed that in, put the interior back together and bought some tan floor mats.

 

So thats about where I'm at, new rims and some 36/13.5/15's is what I really want but gotta wait till some come up on craigslist. Gotta buy a new bed too, mines pretty rusted. After that Its gonna get a new paintjob, I can get a pro one done from my uncle whose an automotive painter, just gotta buy the paint.

In that last pic, I have an clinometer on the dash, does anyone know how to mate that thing to my dash? something that'll make it look clean and almost factory?

 

You definitely seem to have your heart into this one! Should be a great build!

 

So does anyone know of a good way to fix dash cracks? Was thinking about a plastic cover but they're almost $90

Anyone know of a cheaper solution?

 

i bought an extra dash pad at the junkyard and am going to do something like this:

Alright got a little bit of an update, bought some tires and rims yesterday from craigslist.
35/11.5/15 Mickey Thompson Baja Belted


Gonna paint the rims I got black and get them mounted next week

 

maybe fiberglass the whole top of the dash?

 

Yeah that's what I'm planning on doing, 1986. Some of the dash isn't just cracked, the upper part of the center indent thing has been cracked off and now its just cracked up foam So I think fiberglass would be best, thanks

Anyway, here's my chrome rims i got with the Mickey Thompson's


That's after I sanded most of the rust off. They're not the best looking rims but I'm broke! So they'll have to do for now

I've just primed them, gonna be using black engine enamel, I hate chrome!

 

Well I sprayed on a few layers of the engine enamel, looked great, then I sprayed on some Krylon clear coat.. big mistake.

When I opened the top the spout fell out and onto the ground.. then paint dripped out of the spout as I was spraying them.. big drops all over the rims, ruining the paint job. Now I gotta wait for them to finish drying, sand down the bad spots and repaint. Nights worth of work ruined.

I'll start again later today, I've got work at 5AM.

Will I need to sand off all the clear coat to repaint them with the enamel or can I leave the spots that have turned out good?

 

Alright so my initial plans for this truck are:
1. Weber carb
2. New Bed
3. Stinger bumper and winch
4. Half doors
5. Paint
6. Bed box
7. Sliders and rear bumper
8. 5:29's and a locked rear

 

Done yet? If you need help with the rear end let me know maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay be able to help you...

I got a buddy who has a welder and can weld a bit better than me who owes me money
So I'm thinking about chopping up the bed if I can find a decent one cheap.. speaking of beds was that you with the trailor on CL, Logan?

I'm almost done with the rims, ran outta paint But this weekend I'm gonna go over to a guys house on the south end of the island and hes gonna teach me how to use his tire mounting machine and balancer and get those 35's on.

 

Ran across MT-Toy's 1st gen on pirate.. it has convinced me I want the same paint scheme (minus the flatbed) on my truck after the new bed:


Can't tell if he used gloss or flat, in that pic it looks flat, but in another it looks gloss. I don't yet know which one I wanna do.
