83pickup-man's 83 flatbed build
I took my bed off today. I have some exhaust work to do and decided it would be much easier taking the bed off than trying to work from my back. After I got it off I kinda like the look. Anyone got any pics of their flatbeds? Any recommendations of what to make it out of. I am thinking a wooden flatbed instead of metal but I'm not set on anything. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Here Are some pics:
Started the day repainting my grill and re-doing the factory colors on the Toyota Logo.
Saw this a couple days ago. First time I have seen another First Gen in my area. Had to snag a picture.

Here is the Logo and Grille:

Here's a pic of mine. Newer body style than urs tho. I'm a fan of flatbeds although I woulda bobbed my bed in a heartbeat if it had been worth saving.
. Built it all out of 2" square tubing and deck plate.

Well I got the main base of it down after work today. I'm still gonna put 2 more boards across for support. My other question is should I do 7 or 8 pieces from front to back for the actual top or just use a sheet of wood.
Here are todays pics:

I countersunk the bolts so it would be flush.

With the wood spacers added it sits even with the other board and hardly clears my tank

Here is my crazy diagram of what the base will look like. It will have 6ft x 6" boards going front to back with 4" spacing between each board.. On top will either be boards left to right or a sheet of wood. Also looking at a sheet of metal or diamond plated steel.
You may not understand the diagram but it is very easily understandable to me.

I got some more done on the flatbed today. Got another support board down and the top layer of supports. I put down five 2"x6"x6' boards with four inches of spacing between each board. Still haven't decided what to put on top of it. Either steel or a sheet of treated wood.

Good job on the build so far, but to me it's a shame that someone with a nice bed removes it to make a flat bed, around here all of the original beds have rusted to the ground 20 years ago! I can't find any!!

My bed isn't really all that great. I really just painted over rust. Also I am making the flatbed removable. I have drilled holes above the main mount bolts so at any point I can take the 4 bolts out and take the whole bed off at once. Just in case I ever want to put the bed back on.

This wont be permanent. It is to see if I could live with having a flatbed all the time. If I decide to stick with a flatbed I will end up either buying one or getting one made from diamond plated steel. If I do that it will be some time next February or March so this will only be for about 8 or so months. And I didn't spend any money on this. It was all wood we had laying around between my house and my grandparents house. If I don't like it I can always put my bed back on.
