4banginRunner's 1979 Pickup Build-Up Thread

Got the rear end under it, 87 IFS rear, packed with 4.38 gears, new brake lines (hard and soft), painted the drums. U-bolt flip, 87 4Runner springs with AAL's, and poly bushings. Nothing fancy.
Went to the junkyard and picked up some 3rd gen 2WD pickup rear bump stops, (remember 2wd's are sprung under, therefor the bump stops are bolted to the FRAME, not held in by the u-bolts, so they can be welded to the flip plate) With a little grinding, they should save me the $20+ for ordering bump stops. Also snagged a EFI fuel pump out of a 1st gen 4Runner, don't know if it'll work yet, just figured I'd start gathering FP's to see whats going to work in my stock 79 tank.
Yesterday involved some alone time with the 79, gutted the cab, and the engine bay, body panels unbolted, along with the cab. If I didnt mention it before, I'm pulling the cab to swap drive lines, makes things alot easier. Just gotta wait on some help now to yank the cab off...probably next weekend
Worked on the motor a bit today, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and fuel filter. Also took the EGR stuff off and relocated a few things up top to clean up the valve cover.
Pics..
I don't think I've posted a pic of the new heart and soul yet..here it is.

EGR crap

Crappy quick plates I cut out with an angle grinder... critique all you want...they are doing what I want them to do, block the holes.

* Question *
Do I really need the power steering idle-up vacuum lines?
does the PS put that much of a load at idle to hurt anything?
I removed the AC so I don't need that idle-up garbage, just wondering, trying to remove as much clutter and "useless-to-me" crap I don't need.

Big things a happenin

I love my neighbors for putting up with my backyard tomfoolery!

20R/4spd garbage outttt

22RE whattt

I ended up cutting the sway bar and the torque arm bracket off the frame, if those were factory welds......omg they need tissues

Boom goes the dynamite

A long day coming

Now on to the unhappy part of the day
X-member
I knew it wouldn't go in the factory location...and I have heard u-bolts over the frame up and down the forums, butttttt
How?

5-6" back like "normal"

Do I need a specific x-member? I'm using a 86-89 4cyl/5spd 4Runner x-member right now, and u-bolts are defiantly not going to work over the frame. Is it custom x-member time?

Ugh, just read this on pirate
We'll see how this turns out tomorrow, If not, I'll snag the BudBuilt X-member off my 4Runner and see if that works better.

2nd gen crossmember won't mount
the 79-83 crossmembers are wider. I ran into this on my $31 Ebay BudBuilt crossmember that was listed as a '79-83 and it is what prompted my whole dual case quest:

budbuilt skidplate:
Front inside holes: 31" Ctr to ctr 34.5" Ctr to ctr
Front outside holes: 36" Ctr to ctr 39" Ctr to ctr
the stock crossmember:
Rear inside holes: 33" ctr to ctr 37" ctr to ctr
rear outside holes 38" ctr to ctr 42" ctr to ctr
sucked it up and ordered the correct crossmember from BudBuilt.com. Got to hand it to Bud and his Crew. Had the thing with in 5 days. I think that is great service on something that weighs over 40 lbs. I have a guy that will buy the other crossmember so that will help me recoup quite a bit of my cost.
Comparison of my original/first incorrect budbuilt/ new one:

Stock Crossmember VS. BudBuilt...nice when all the holes match up..imagine that:
you might be able to use some plate to modify it...it might be on sky's off road website that shows a plate adapter with 6 bolts on one side..couldn't find the example I was thinking of..

the stock crossmember:
Rear inside holes: 33" ctr to ctr 37" ctr to ctr

So I just got an email reply from Bud at Budbuilt:
The skidplate I got is for an 84-94, the passenger side mount is inside the frame
Thanks to the ebay seller for listing it wrong...oh well. He said he would give a good deal on just the crossmember. I can use the skidplate...
Hat's off to Bud for the quick reply....

To bad I read this now instead of before I pulled the BudBuilt off my 4Runner... (somewhat of a good thing b/c my Marlin low-pro plug was loose and leaking a poo load of gear lube EVERYWHERE)
But in the end, after juggling 3 different x-members, I got my stock one to work. Mounted backwards, used the rearward holes in the frame, and now using u-bolts over the frame for the now rearward holes in the x-member with a peice of 1/4" plate. I'll post pics of that tomorrow...
Anywho, go the p/s lines hooked up, fuel line to the motor hooked up, ran my soft brake lines and plopped the cab back on. Its a beautiful sight seeing a 22RE in a 1st gen

Tomorrows supposed to rain so I guess i'll get all the wiring and under-hood stuff (coil, p/s reservoir, coolant overflow, etc.) together and ready to go when the monsoon subsides
She's gettin close boys and girls

Ran and plugged in most of the 87 harness today, lots of cutting and swapping plugs for the cluster and column plug, still have to wire up the wipers and ignition. Along with making a new rear harness.
I still haven't finished my x-member u-bolt plates...went wheelin in the AM then came home and ran wires.
Pulled the bed though. Did this so i can finish up the rear shocks, bumpstops, exhaust, and fuel pump.
Looks is a sad state..but its gettin there faster than I planned.

Speaking of fuel pumps!
Pulled the pump out of the 79 tank to swap on my 87 4Runner EFI pump
Its rigged and I hope it works...if not, i'll be on the hunt for an actual EFI tank.
Pics of the swap.
79 stuff as pulled

4Runner EFI pump on the left.

Hose clamps are my friend

All buttoned up, even wired it for the 4Runner harness!

Picked up a complete rear harness and some fuses/relays at the junkyard yesterday.
Got ambitious and decided to see what if anything works so far...so i hooked up a battery and the grounds and the only thing that did anything......was the headlight relay buzzing
something, somewhere is not hooked up right, nor grounded.
Ugh, I'll be working on some other things before I get at the wiring anymore....POed at that now

Got in "one of those moods" after the 87 harness did nothing but make the headlight relay excited.... and ripped the entire 87 harness out of the truck.

Went up to the attic to my own personal Yota junkyard to look for another ignition plug on my spare column.......and what stares me in the face? The complete harness from my 82 parts truck I had a while back.

To make a long story short
I'll now be doing a "22R" to 22RE swap per say.
So far EVERYTHING is so much eaiser...SR5 cluster w/tach plugs in, the column plug (wipers, head lights, turn, haz) plugs in, the ignition...you guessed it, plugs in. These 3 plugs were IMO, the downfall to todays failed "see what happens" attempt.
The Pirate4x4 22R->22RE swap thread has proved every valuable. Printed 3 copies to go along with the 3 copies of the 87 and 79 wiring diagrams
To bad it'll be raining all day tomorrow, or I'd throw the SOB in

Got the 82 harness in, hooked the battery to it, and I have cab functions! Headlights, heater, I would presume turn signals (relay clicked...lights are not on the truck right now.)
Just gotta swap out some plugs now for the alternator.
I spent a few hours yesterday choppin apart the 87 harness taking out the "cab" of it leaving just the essentials to the motor. Still have a bit to go on that.
Searching around YT last night I found a post with an awesome wiring diagram that I'll be using when the 87 and 82 harness's get married.
My main concern was wiring the AFM..I think I should be alright now

Wired up alot today...
And she fired up!
.....But dies right away...Haynes manual says "Loose or damaged wire harness at the distributor, coil or alternator." or Vacuum leaks...which is unlikely, most hoses are replaced / checked and are good. EGR is blocked off and vac. ports capped.
So I'll be working on getting those wires figured out.
Fuel pump only runs if its constant hot to the battery...I'll probably run a switch for it just so I don't have deal with more schematics..

So i'm really hoping that the return line is what's keeping the truck from staying running...if not, might have to change the blinker fluid

#139
on the exhaust note, I got me a y-pipe off a suburban the other day, so I'm defiantly running duals on this truck.
*** This needs to be said before someone says something **
Say what you want, I know its a 4cyl, and I don't care. It'll be 4-1 header 2.5" exhaust into a Turbo muffler. Out to dual 2.25" tailpipes out the corners of the bed.

Well...something always bites me in the a$$ when I think I can get away with something..
Ran my brand new $10 1/4" return line...got the truck to run for about 5 seconds from yesterday's 2-3 seconds. The fuel pump is working, I have fuel to the motor and returning to the tank. But a new dilemma arose...I used the stock carb fuel line (3/16"?) and I looked at my 4Runner and its 5/16" main fuel.
Pirate4x4 and their search function lead me to this info
5/16" for Main fuel line
1/4" Is ok for return and vents
It sounds like the truck isn't getting "enough" fuel. It does "run" for the 2-5 seconds but its acting EXACTLY like firing up a carb motor with a dixie cup of fuel in the carb.
So I'm thinking, I know I have fuel getting to the motor since it does fire up, but could the small 3/16" hard line(Frame line) be choking it to not get a constant amount of fuel needed for EFI (hence my 4Runner's 22RE to have 5/16" line)?
No biggie to swap in a 5/16" line for me, just hoping that this gets the motor to stay running...
