Damn! I have not looked at this thread for a while but the progress looks great! You should be able to do some good wheeling this year!

Thanks man! I hope to drive it A LOT this summer, especially camping, roadtrips, and pointless driving where driving is the point! I also want to take it to a the local track see how she goes against those automatic tercels lol.

Progress:
Last wet sanding before final coat, notice the ghetto sanding block and 180 grit sponge setup.
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-s3dz8ik.jpg

Fender getting last coat of primer
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-idvqevy.jpg
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-xq3aeyw.jpg

Preparing door before applying rockerguard, I used this product mainly to hide imperfections in the door, maybe I'm repeating myself but the doors are aweful!

Random pic

I also did the lower cab, for the same reasons and also for protection.
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-j76izsu.jpg
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-t4ykqbg.jpg
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-0vfk7sn.jpg

I did three coats with 4 big cans
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-hp1wgmn.jpg

Primed the whole cab, once dry I did a final wetsanding with 400 grit
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-0pludv4.jpg
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-lwphasd.jpg
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-johecqy.jpg

Then, yesterday, the moment that I've been waiting for the longest time ever, PAINT!
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-l4nkdqr.jpg

So as you know I want to do an off-white kind of eggshell beige, so said to myself, I'll mix white and a bit of brown and see how it goes, well turns out if you put more than 10% brown the paint turns to primer grey, wtf? Luckily I have about 6 more coats to do (already did 2), so I can take the time to get it better.

1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-aezpfyt.jpg

almost there, still too grey
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-3bcd9my.jpg

still too grey
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-bmwldoe.jpg

THAT'S the colour I want, just a touch of brown with a lot of white.
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-tyrxvue.jpg
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-lpzdt4c.jpg

So sunday I will be wet sanding with 400 grit to remove orange peel, then another two coats, it should look smoother by then, also I need to buy a sanding block! Stay tuned, should be finished less than 1 week from now!

Thanks Corey, Brandon and Nervo, I really want the truck to be ready mid june, so I can make last minutes adjustments before the big roadtrip/trail ride on june 28th and have it reliable so I can drive 3 hours to the trail camp, ride for 5 days and then come back on its own power...a bit ambitious but what could go wrong :p

Yesterday I wetsanded everything and put a 3rd coat, it already looks much better and slicker, with the fenders bolted on it's a great sight! Pics soon

Thanks Dave, I'm sure yours will look good too and better since, well it's a trekker, and a much better base to start on!

Half sanded with 400 with a real sanding block (something I should have bought before) and half with the 3rd coat, much whiter and smoother

I don't have much space for good pics but you get the idea, tomorrow I will be wetsanding with 600 grit, and applying a 3rd coat, can't wait.

Better base...lol. Have you seen the pics in my thread? See the floors in the video driving?

I was kinda hoping the Trekker would do the "Christine" thing and start fixing itself. Maybe I need to go get some wiper blades to make that process start.

Nope. It takes tons of hard work and thats where you guys are light years ahead of me. Realistically....Im at least 6 months from taking it apart. Minimum.

So threads like these keep me hopeful that the trekker shall live someday. Gives me plenty of time to find parts though...I had taught me patience...which I used to lack.

Carry on Toyota soldier.

Well I still beleive you have a better base lol, my original floors were non-existant and the replacement floors put in '97 were also rotten lol! Ok let's just say yours is less worse I think gathering all parts before starting is better, and that is what I will do with my next project, which will probably be a 84-85 celica supra with a monster of an N/A engine, in 2-3 years

Yeah, especially a flat paint, the touchup only looks cleaner than the rest lol.

I'm going on a trail ride saturday with a friend of mine, I'll bring pics for you guys. I think it's a rockcrawl trail about 45mins from my house, we got invited by jeep guys, we'll be riding in a samurai with 5.29 locked toyota axles, 6.5 tcase, yj springs and 36 irok, trailer queen, we'll see how that goes

Oh that sounds pretty fun. I want to go with mightymouses crew sometime when I get healed up.

Long as I'm not bashin mine up.

I want a 84-85 Supra too. Badly. When I was like 16 there was this really goodlooking gal who had a really cool supra all raced out with a cage. She was like 20-21. Maybe I was 17. All I know is she was firing on me hard for months...but all I was interested in was her car. What a dummy. I shoulda hit that.

Sounds like it looked sweet, I would also like to have it completely stripped with a cage, anyways, gotta finish the truck first!

I'll start with the wheeling trip, really great saturday, we had a samurai with yota axles welded, 5.29, 6.5 t-case, 1.6 8v, yj springs, 36 iroks, there was fully built a blazer with a yj body, and two jk rubicon (full lock) on 35''.

The samurai winching the heep that was stock on top of a rock
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-a6waytm.jpg
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-y25xrtt.jpg
Took about an hour to free him up, he later had a major ps pump leak and lost his serpentine belt, bad day for him.
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-elztd5u.jpg
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-6hn78rd.jpg
The samurai was dancing on the rocks like a fat bouncy balerina, and it was unstopable, it's crazy how good his setup works.

Back to mine

Sanded again, 600

After following a thread on a vw bus forum about peoples experience with tremclad, people mentioned to dilute the paint like the consistency of milk, about 40-45% mineral spirits. I did it that way and I layed it down thicker and it layed down smooth, had many runs but once you roll on the paint you wait 2-3 minutes and go over with the roller with very low pressure, thats the trick

1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-mt6l38m.jpg
1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-j0xlqgu.jpg

Then 48 hours later, I sanded it all down again with 1000, did 2 more coats, the FINAL coats, I haven't gone back yet I can't wait to see what it looks like a bit drier and out in the sun. I'll have to wait another month or two until final sanding and polishing, which should make it smoother while still having the utility rugged look (to me).

Final coat

1981 toyota pickup DLX Project-yxbg8a8.jpg

Still have some little details to take care of, but it's pretty much finished for now until final wet sand and polish in a couple of months once the paint will be fully dry.
I am super happy of what I have accomplished with the cab, which by the way will be installed on the frame for good wednesday evening!

Thanks man I sure will, and you need to find a way to post pics so we can see your progress! I'll be on holidays next week and I plan to spend the week at the garage, about 8 hours a day maybe more. I wonder how long it's gonna take me to assemble it back, but I have a feeling I'll be really tight for my dead line of june 28th. Still have lots to do and to buy.

My weber 38/38 dges has been shipped today, bought it here, quite cheap and a real weber with the white choke plate, seems to be hard to find these days.
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/200905572627?...84.m1497.l2649

I also found a set of side markers for 15 bucks, waiting for them to ship it
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/251337366604?...84.m1497.l2649

tomorrow we will be installing the cab on the frame for the final assembly, can't wait it's gonna be a good moment.

webers were made in italy until 1992, then they were made in spain, or so I read.

Maybe it was expensive because it was new old stock from the time they were made in italy, or some chinese copy wrote that to make you believe it's an italian original because weber is italian and they are not allowed to write made in spain, and the price makes you think it's original vs paying 180$... I don't know, as long as it works well.
