I'm slightly envious... The end is in sight for me, but it would still be nice to be driving it right now. In case you didn't notice, I think you forgot to paint your hood.... ;o)

As for your oil problem, is it burning oil or leaking oil? I may be wrong, but I thought that you rebuilt that engine? If I were you, I would take some feeler gauges on your trip and re-lash the valves once you get there. The ride out should be enough to settle everything down in the valve train. And if you did rebuild the engine or did head work I would also do an oil change as soon as you get there too.

Good luck on your trip and have fun! Meanwhile I'll be stuck at home doing bodywork....

Don't worry Dave when you are done it will seem like the time spent on it went by fast, you just have to keep having fun doing it! As for my oil consumption, I rebuilt the head and everything around the block but I didn't touch the block, the oil control rings were already worn so I knew it would blow smoke, especially with the added compression of the 20r head and the fact that it's been milled 0.015 too, my compression test (not really acurate since we forgot to hold the throttle open and the engine blows less smoke now than when we did the test) is 157-145-140-147. But at least it starts well, pulls strong and sounds mean!

Yes I'm so exited when I got out of my first ride my legs were shaking and I was a bit emotional hahaha. 1h30 till departure, see you guys later!!

Thanks guys! She did it without a hickup, except for normal adjustments. 600 mile total with 4 days of trail riding and oh man what a tank, I beat the hell out of her to test it, and with the welded diffs it just kept on climbing. I have a leak at the header where 2 pipes meet (po repair didn't last), I also have a vibration from 20-25 mph that I need to take care of. I even loaded her with 5 36'' iroks on rims with double beadlocks for a friend through the mountain roads and the trails no problem haha. I know the carb is underjetted but I averaged 23 mpg highway at 55 with all the camping gear and 31'' trail tires, pretty impressive so far with a weber 38

On the way there stopping for poutine.

Camp/trail site

Buggies on the right, trucks on the left, even a unimog was there! 14 trucks total on saturday.

Now for the sad part, I did some damage. I cracked both rear tail light lenses, bent my front bumper and damaged my passenger fender, and cracked a side vent. Nothing major though I'm pretty sure I can fix it so it doesn't show much, and I wanted to change the front bumper anyway.

I would love to see more pictures of your adventure, that looks like such a fun trip!
Congratulations on a amazing extensive build, by the way. You'd had some rough beginnings, but your effort really paid off!

Thanks robotmose, I'm really proud and can't stop looking at it, unfortunately there are no more pics of the trip I have acess to but yeah it's the event of the year for me, we are on a friend's uncle woodyard which is on a mountain of rocks, there are trails everywhere that are all ours and each year we make new trails, we ride day and night for 4 days, eat when were hungry, sleep when tired and trail when we want, we are going back in august there is a mile long stream down the mountain that looks really sweet to climb but the unimog is gonna have to make a path to it . It is so remotely located that it is also a big happening for the area and people love hearing us laying on the rev limiter ripping up rocks at 2 am (no joke, they really like it). So far I have many issues to take care of like:

-massive oil consumption, 3 quarts per 1000mi, many of which is blown through the valvecover vents because of blow by.
-header leak at a 2-1 merge
-slight vibration from 20-30 mph
-Soft brake pedal
-fab mudflaps before I get pulled over

Appart from that it runs like a champ really, I'm pretty surprised how much it sticks to the road and how stable it is without anti-roll bars, it really feels like a sport truck. For the block I will either tough it out till winter and rebuild my block as a winter project, or find a used block and swap it in in the mean time, I just don't have a garage anymore (current project, building a shed so I can turn garage into car only workshop). The header leak is an easy fix and will be done shortly, the vibration was initially caused by a missing clip on one of the u-joints, after fixing that it still vibrated a little but goes away for a couple of miles when I grease so I'll just replace the (new) joints again some time soon, so far I can live with it. stay tuned for updates but it might take a bit longer than what you guys are used to haha

Nice pic. Sounds like a good trip! Lets see some pics of the damaged bumper and fender.

Sure here they are:

Thats the vent I broke when I slid and landed on a tree, I was sure I bent the whole b pillar, my heart sunk! When I saw that I only broke the vent I was so relieved.

Yesterday I cleaned up the interior, still missing a couple of pieces but I'm in the process of moving garage so it's gonna wait.

header leak is fixed, driveline vibration fixed itself after a little offroad adventure ?, but now I'm running 20w50 oil with lucas additive to try and reduce blowby and oil consumption, and it works but when I start it I get timing chain chatter for 1 second or 2 (I replaced the guides but only cleaned the tensioner). I can also hear bottom end bearing chatter or pre-ignition when accelerating at lower rpm or leaving off the line with a heavier foot. I think I will try running premium and/or retard timing to 6 deg.

I agree. 22rs don't take kindly to heavy oils. Believe me, I've made that mistake!

Yeah, it is, but I'd figured it'd take it since the block is so worn, I don't usually run this kind of heavy oil but I want to minimize oil consumption while I look for another block.

So yesterday I went to get some soil for my garden with my truck, I was real happy to be hauling something and I decided to take the long way home, about 3 mins from home, something catches my eye on someones lawn on the left, it was a first gen on a trailer, with an original bed!! I stepped on the brakes, made a u turn and pulled in front of the guys house, he came out and said ''I'd knew you'd turn around '', so we spoke for a while, it's an 81 with a 350 motor he swaped in many years ago, bed is quite rusted but maybe repairable depending on someones standards, frame has been repaired but it's not as bad as mine was and cab looks cleeaann, with a sunroof too, doors and fenders looked pretty good. It hasn't ran for 6 years and he now wants to sell it, he wants 2000$ for it, with spare hood, wheels and a roll bar...a bit expensive but I'm keeping in touch with him and I'll see if it's still for sale in the fall....might make an exellent parts truck
