Transmission Identification

I bought up a '94 1/2 ton pickup almost 2 years ago (22-RE). The previous owner had put a 5 speed tranny from a '82 celica. As best as I can find, the tranny is either a W55 or W58 (based on what I have researched what toyota used during that year in the celica). On the bottom of the intermediate plate are 8 numbers (possibly a letter in the mix as well, not sure). I know the first 3 numbers stand for the year and month of production, however, the last 5 digits are production codes. Anyone have any idea if they identify what type of tranny it it? The code is 202 (2=1982, 02=February) 17599 (can't really tell if that is the number 1 or the capital letter I). Any thoughts?

It is a 2wd. I am just trying to find out if anyone knows what those stamped numbers mean on the bottom of the tranny (intermediate plate). Is this a means of identifying the tranny or do they mean something else?

if it's a 2wd it is probably not the W56 then. Please in the future give as much info as possible so people can help you out as accurately as possible. Kind of important 2wd vs 4wd when talking about transmissions.

have you tried running your VIN number here to see what they tell you?

I can almost (99.9%) guarantee it's the W55.

Not trying to be a smart alect, but if you read the initial post, the tranny came from a 1982 Celica, don't know anymore about it than that. I am really interested in if anyone knows what the stamped numbers that are on the bottom of the intermediate plate. Again, not trying to be a smart a$$, I appreciate all and any info you all have provided.

Swimmer, I am inclined to agree with you, but that small percentage of doubt keeps me intrigued, as well as knowing what those dang numbers mean.

Anyone know if the shifter bushings are the same for the W55 and W58 tranny from '82?

Hi Blocks,

Did you ever find an answer to the transmission serial numbers???

I have the same problem, need some parts for a W55 put into my truck sometime in the past, so there is no way to match the tranny to the original VIN.

The Toyota parts people I've talked to say there is no way to determine what part numbers are correct for a given transmission unless you have a VIN (example, (10) different part numbers for 2nd gear for a W55). If this is true, then why would Toyota even bother to put a serial number on the transmissions, its of no use according to their parts people!!!!

Toyota, having produced 10's of millions of vehicles cannot tell you what parts are in a given transmission from the number STAMPED on the case???? It can't be that messed-up!! Somebody must know the cross index for these transmissions????

Toyota doesn't put the serial number on the transmission, the manufacturer(Aisin) does. However...there's also a Toyota part number for each different transmission that they install in their vehicles. But...to find the part number requires knowing the VIN(or atleast being able to narrow it down to a group of potential VINs by knowing some specifics regarding the vehicle it came from). And...even knowing the part number doesn't necessarily tell you what type of transmission it is, other than if it's manual or automatic(which is plainly obvious by visual inspection).

Answer to the question: The people that put the serial numbers on the transmissions, and the people that give those transmissions part numbers, are the people who know what the serial/part numbers mean.
