Skiing or snowboarding

Some friends of mine and I are going up to Mount Washington.

I've never been snowboarding or downhill skiing before but tired cross country skiing when I was a kid.

Should I take downhill skiing lessons or snowboarding lessons? They are the same price.

snowboard.

well it depends on what your friends are doing too. i started off skiing, but now i only snowboard. i was just at mt high yesteday here in so cal and like 95% of the people were snowboarding, but i know it's not like that everywhere. both are challenging in their own ways to learn, but fun once you get the hang of it. also, see what the mtn you're going to caters to more - skiers or boarders.

If you've never done either, skiing would probably be easier to get started with.

I personally am a two planker but lots of my buddies are knuckle draggers. I think I have an easier time landing jumps cleanly but they can spin in the air easier which looks cooler, when they land right. On the flat areas I can skate like a speed skater on ice while they have to hike. I spend a lot of time waiting for them to do and undo their bindings for the lift rides but I don't care.

Whatever way you choose to slide, its all good.

Whatever you decide, make sure you take a lesson. It's way better than falling on your ass all day while you try to teach yourself.

I do both. I have been skiing for 20+years but only snowboarding for three. Just do what appeals to you. Both are fun in different ways.

Snowboarding is the way to go, As you can prob tell by my name i like it :p. Its a lot more fun and besides, you wanna look cool dont you ? ... To be in with the skiers you have to wear an all-in-one ski suit and thats Defintly NOT cool :p ..

From what I've heard...
You can ski for 10+ years and never really master it, but you can board for 1-2 years and get real good.

I think it goes both ways though. Skiing is a lot less painfull to learn, but I would say that you'll be boarding with the "big dogs" in less time.

(I'm a boarder myself...just need the snow so I can get my season started )

Just try one... personally I skied for about 5 years, and then made the switch to snowboarding and have been at it for 3 years now. Just try whatever one you want to... and take some lessons... its much better than trying to pick it up on your own and falling on ur bum all day long. ouch! Anyways, goodluck and whatever you choose, have some fun. Peace.

I am a die-hard skiier. Never tried Snowboarding, but I don't like having both of my feet mounted to the same board. Its all up to preference.

Anyone ski/boarded at Mt Batchlor? I am going to my in-laws at Bend OR this weekend and going skiing there. I wonder if it is as good as Utah...

I was an avid skier for 10 yrs....but after a lot of ankle injuries playing b-ball.....I chose to try snowboarding, b/c being strapped to the board...my ankles remained in a constant position.

If this is your first time snowboarding....have your a$$ prepared to be chilled most of the time. If you plan on going up to the hills a couple of times this year....I'd recommend snowboarding...especially if anyone in your group is just learning too...after the 2nd or 3rd time you really start to feel confident and you'll be able to get around pretty good.

Good Luck and hope your butt stays warm and unbruised.....

Well we went up to the mountain yesterday and we all chose snowboarding.

I spent more time on my butt than on the board and today every inch of my body is bruised.

It was a fun day but my friend Chris and I have decided that snowboarding is not for big heavy guys like us. too much weight in the upper body so the slightest turn of the head would turn the snowboard.

Next time we'll try skiing.

Nordic (x-country) skiing. Hurts a lot less when you fall down!

The only skiing I could ever manage was cross-country. I got anywher near a hill, I fall down. Annoyed my parents no end, because a family, all close friends to my family, owned a cabin in Squaw Valley, in the Olympic village. We'd go up several times a winter so my folks could go downhill skiing. I'd just go to the skating rink, and do what in my mind was speed skating until I was exhausted, then sit in front of a fire drinking hot cocoa until dinner. Then walk home, only about a mile, unless I'd found a lovely snowbunny.

My folks also owned a couple of cabins in Donner Pass, just a few miles from Truckee. We'd go up there a few times a winter, and bring the family we knew with us. I could cross country all over the place up there. Lot's of Skiddoo time, too.

My winter sport stories, anywho...
