My new fall/winter project - suzuki z400
I picked up this 2003 Suzuki z400 the other day and i couldn't pass it up for the price. its got a 440 big bore kit, hot cams cams in it, yoshimira exhaust (just saw one for $579 on sale) jetted carb, nerf bars, dg front bumper, and a aftermarket axle (blue steel? brand maybe)
but the bad it froze over winter and was run hot and the head is cracked. the rear caliper is seized and is missing bolts here and there.
so i pulled it apart tonight and i'm going to see if i can get the head just sent off and welded up if not i've seen heads for $200-600 and complete motors for $400-1200
but i only payed $100 for the atv and no its not stolen. i know the guy, he needed money and i got the title with it. but i can quadruple my money even if i just part it out
well here's some crappy cell pics

thats what i've heard i can't wait to get it all back together.
but i have the motor all pulled apart now the head is definitely toast with a total of 2 GIANT cracks and the jug is pretty scared up in one section but i think im going to just hone the cyl and if its not way out of tolerance just go with it and hope it doesn't burn alot of oil but if it does it is a $100 four wheeler haha
but when this motor does let go im thinking stroker, big bore, and a race head or maybe just a newer model FI motor swap.

The head is the same as the dirt bike motors around that same age. You could use a DR-Z or DR-Ze head. Do you know which big bore kit it has in it? If it's a sleeve style (Wiseco) you can hone it but if it's a plated style (Cylinder Works) you shouldn't try it.
I did a big bore stroker build on my wife's Z400 a couple years ago. It flat out rips. We go to the dunes around Colorado, Utah, and Idaho a lot, and it needed more gitty up for the big stuff. It's a 470 now with Stage 4 Webb Cams, 12:1 JE piston, FCR 39mm carb from a YFZ450, and a Dynatec ignition.
There are tons of forums out there for these quads, but I like Suzuki Central.
Good luck with it.
