Buying SunTop

Not selling, yet. Seems like there might be enough interest in better top designs here that we may be able to get Specialty Top (owns Kayline designs) to build something better than they are.

Seems like the only complaint about the STC top is the large amounts of drilling that are required to mount it. Roger Brown makes a kit that will allow you to bolt it up using the stock holes.

The problem with the STC is that you have to drill the tailgate which is the most likely place to rust (at least on the mag-chlor covered Colorado roads). I'd rather use the factory rear glass.

I've only seen one Suntop, I owned it last year and sold it to a member here. He will chime in I'm sure if he wants to comment.

Obviously there are more out there, just who knows where they are and what kind of condition are they in.

Someone with the right know how could make these. The frame was relatively simple, just looked like parts from a bimini boat top to me. The real money will be in the material and labor for the canvas top.

Sun top is the "Holy Grail" of soft tops, as far as I'm concerned. I sincerly hope you can convince STC to use that design. I would buy one, if I hadn't bought Gohawks.

yea, I'm interested in one but my one concern is the mounting. I have never seen one really up close so I'm not sure how extensive it is to install. I really don't want to drill into my baby like that. But I guess hit me up with a price and I'll get back to you. thanks

Lt. Dan, I PM'd you about the design.

As far as I can see it is as you said. I won't buy a Kayline design, unless I can put 4Crawlers adapters on and add more adapters to the rear and the front. Then it's largely not worth it.

Thx

I talked to the guy who owned SunTop Products, Inc. (Spent some $ tracking him down.) He said he made at least 400 of them. Sold quite a few to Japan. Said he saw one going down a road in England as well. Unfortunately, he got rid of all of his stuff a few years ago. He was going to check with his brother who co-designed it and call me back.

All that to say that there should be more of them out there. Even if one isn't in very good condition, a pattern could probably be made from the fabric.

Wow, can't believe you were able to track the guy down! Let us know what develops on this.

It is a good design, as Dan and i can attest to, I just worry about what a manufacturer will have to price it at to make money.
