Tire selection

In conjunction with my thread about lifing my truck- I am trying to find a set of four tires for it after I throw on the 2/3" lift and black Cragar d-windows.

My truck is a daily driver, but i frequently go offroading. I'm trying to create a balance between functional and economical daily driver and capable off roader.

It is sitting on stock height right now with Milestone 31x10.50R15 tires which haven't failed me yet. They are however pretty beat. One has a nail in it and another is showing a little balding from when my camber was off.

with my lift I was hoping to go to 32x10.50R15s. I don't know how that increase in tire size will deal with my gearing, though I hear that 32" tires will fit without rubbing at stock height- before I even add my OME lift.

I am looking to get a relatively inexpensive set of tires, not wanting to go over $600 for a new set. I'd like to take the A/T route for tread. Does anyone have any recommendations? I am aware of the big name brands like BFG and Goodyear and Firestone, but what about brands like Kumho and such?

Any suggestions and links will be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

i got a set of 32x11.5r15 Cooper STT on my stock 91 sr5 and i love the stance and ride they give. I ended up cutting my lower bumper back like6inches just to be shure!

If i only had the Time and money to lift it!

Good luck getting a NEW set for less than $600. I just put 4 31x10.50's Mastercraft Coursers on my 92, it came to a little under $800.

Sometimes you can snag a set of decent used a/ts or m/ts on craigslist. Just search for the size you have in mind and see what comes up.

32" is sort of an oddball diameter tire and most manufacturers skip this size, but there are still some good ones available. For $600 you will never find a new set at this price from a vendor - CL only for that cheap. Look at BFG AT/KM2s, GY MTR/K, Falken Wildpeak, Maxxis Bighorn, Interco tires if you want a 32" tire. If going to 33x10.5, same thing with only a few companies making the pizza cutters.

i've had maybe a dozen sets of bfg's. hard to beat imo, but the last tire change i wanted something a little more aggressive than an AT.
the then new KM2's were sold out so i went with a set of kelly safari
TSR. they are supposed to be made by goodyear.
they have probably 10 to 15k miles on them and still look new.
they do have enough siping to work good in the rain and ice.
the only thing i do not like about them is the rocks from the driveway get stuck in the tread. you can look at them in my video , link in my sig below.
with stock gearing stay with 31's imo. done it and will not do it again.

I bought some 31×10.5 bfgs last july

Theyre great tires but expensive. Im looking to buy some 35s or 37s but cant justify getting rid of these Tire selection-afactlm.jpg if you live near ohio I can cut you a smokin deal. They still have the little rubber hairs sticking out of the tread that brand new tires have. $600

going to take a guess...American Racing Outlaw II in a 15x10 size with backspacing somewhere around 4.75"(stock) to 3.5". if you want wider tires in the future, like a 12.5", you'll need around 3.75" backspacing to have inner sidewall clear control arms.

since it's only a 31" tire, there shouldn't be any rubbing anywhere -- but technically speaking, BFG specs for the 10.5" ATs is to be put on a 7-9" wheel, so if there will be any rubbing you will see it on the outer face of the wheels since it's one of the downsides to the "wide, deep dish look" with not-so-wide tires if you like to hug curbs or drive off-pavement

And the lower the backspace number the more the wheel "sticks out," right? So in other words, you can sort-of make a narrower wheel look wider/give the truck a wider stance by going with a smaller backspace (and/or) negative offset?

correct - but you gotta remember that the further you stick out, the wider your turning radius will be as well as more leverage on stuff like wheel bearings/axles.

Ok. What is the offset of YOUR wheels? I see the truck in your avatar and it looks like what I am going for...do you have any other pics of it?

I ask because I found some wheels I like, but the offset is -19. Is that terrible?

look into mastercraft tires, they have several good ATs at good price points. the Kelly TSRs are a good tire. they are made by Goodyear and are kinda like the Goodyear Duratracs.

I don't know offset numbers but my backspace in inches is 3.75". Wheels are 15x8 look identical to american racing outlaw ii's. On these I can run 33x12.5" tires and not rub suspension. My Toyos have around 3/8" clearance to UCA and due to tire size/width I did have to trim and pound to make fit with minimal lift. This is the size you want if going with a 33 or even a 35. I don't see why a 31 wouldn't work as well. If you never plan to go this big then you might get away with deeper backspacing (but why not have the option?) because section width is less on smaller tires.

I have a couple decent wheel pics in a reply to this post: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f177...86/index3.html
