tire pressure help

just bought a set of goodyear MTR's 31x10.5 and the tire guy put them at 30psi so they wouldnt cup. Is this the proper pressure?

now it makes me think maybe i was running my yoko's 32x11.5 at too high of a pressure (40psi) ??

what should i have the yokos and the mtrs at for driving around town and highway.

I have always ran my 31x10.5x15 tires at 32 to 35 PSI.
40 PSI seems way to high.

There is a way you can put some chalk on a tire and then drive to view the chalk mark on the ground to determine the correct pressure.
(See Drg's correct chalk method below)

I have never done that, I have really good luck running my tires at the above pressure.

I also run all 4 at the same pressure.

i always put them between 32 and 35. Even my PC MTs say to inflate to 35 cold. If you check when theyre hot, its possible they could be at 40. The chalk method is like this:

draw a line of chalk straight across the tread surface of your tire. Drive forward a few feet. If chalk is missing in the middle, you are overinflated because only the middle has come into contact with the ground. If it is missing on the sides, you are underinflated because only the sides are making contact, the middle is bulging inwards. If it is uniform across, you have perfect pressure.

yep use the chalk technique, and keep an eye on the tread wear. If theyre over underinflated you'll be able to see it. Underinflated the sides will wear faster, and overinflated the center will wear faster. (just fyi im currently running my BFG AT's at 37, but i will probably lower it because the ride is pretty rough with them that high.) Oh, the psi number on the side of the tire is maximum pressure, and you shouldnt be running the tires that high, although most quickie lube type places like to inflate the tires up to that number, even after checking the door sticker.

this gets me thinking my 96 tacoma calls for pressures at 26 and 28psi front/back. i thought this was really low. they are brand new tires and i dont wasnt to wear them faster than they should

I run my 33x12.5's at 30. You run a low pressure to preserve tire life, and a high pressure to get better gas mileage.

I have run BFG ATs at 35-40, and the tires wore out in 20-30k, i run them at 30 they last 40k+

I was wondering that myself, I ran the Big-O AT at 50psi because that was max, I like them that way, they would get kinda squrrely and plow when low, Didnt care much for that.
The BFG MT's I have now are at 35psi and seem to run nice that way, The Max is 65psi
