What tread pattern? AT? MT?
What rim size? 15"? 16"? 17" Bigger?

For on/road off/road use it is hard to beat an MTR IMO.
For strick offroad I have SS Iroks.

Typically I buy big offroad tires online cause local places can't compete price wise, but smaller stuff like 33s I buy local so I can get good service on a daily use tire if need be.

look into the maxxis bighorns! i know 4 people, including me who have them and no complaints.

i researched them before i purchased them and heard nothing but good things. i odn't know the prices of them now but i got mine back in summer and prices were a little cheaper then i believe. but i got my bought, mounted, etc. for a less than 6. less than 150 a tire was too good to pass up.

bighorns, 255/85/16, 150 a tire (plus tax)

I love em, not loud at all, great wet traction (street), offroad a lot better than a/t's. Still get 18-20 mpg with my fatass.

You have a 98 runner, I bet you have the big brake package, and that means no 15" rims, unless you change out rotors and calipers.

So the more backspacing the better then??? I found the cragar soft 8's in 16x8 It would be ok to run these with the big break package the other fella mentioned earlier correct??? Also if anyone could help me out on the exact bolt pattern of a 98 yota 4 runner???

my take on back spacing is: more/deeper back spacing will mean the tire will be closer to the inside/frame - too much could potentially cause the inside edge of tires to rub on suspension components. less back spacing will make them closer to the outside/fender - too much could cause the outside of the tire to rub on the fenders if you don't have enough lift to clear them.

what's wrong with the rims you already have on the rig? if you stick with them you could go with a 10.5" wide tire and potentially have no issues with BS. you'd also get better gas mileage on road due to less friction.

BFG KM2's are what i plan on getting for my truck. aggressive enough for the trails and tread pattern is tight enough to keep road noise down. i think a 33 runs around $160.

The tires on the rig right now are just really ugly to me I guess I could paint them I just wanted to know if the 16 soft 8's would work with my year of truck...

I've got lt285/75r16 terra grapplers and I love em so far for onroad; They've got 3000 miles on em at present, time for a rotation.
They make a little noise on the highway, but not overwhelmingly loud at all.
On pavement results:
So far I have not had the abs kick in once since I mounted them, and no indication of loss of traction.
I've gone through an inch of water at 40+ mph, and came into a stop sign somewhat hot in a half inch of hail with still no abs activation.
I'm dieing to see what they'll do in the mud, but need new rims first as the stock rims cause some rubbing at full drop, and I don't want to take any chances on damaging my new tires. I got em for $588.00 shipped for 4.
Now on the rims, make sure you're sitting down. Control you're breathing and enjoy the ride.
Here's my latest dilema on wheels:

I'm hav'n a ball. Though For some reason this song I heard on the doctor demento show years ago keeps coming to mind. It's called "They're coming to take me away", "ha ha"
