Ok, I've searched and researched my brains out for the last half a year or so while planning my lift on what wheels will work.
I've got a 974runner sr5 4wd w/abs. I just put a 2" suspension lift on and Nitto terragrapplers in 285/75r16 on the stock rims for now. I get very little rubbing on the upper a arms when just running on road. I havent taken if off road as with the front wheels at full drop, I get rubbing on the a arms when turning one direction and rubbing on the frame turning the other. Also there's less than 1/8" clearance between the upper balljoint and the tire sidewall.

Here's my dilema, I see alot of 3rd gen runners with the procomp series 97 wheels, 16x8 with 4.25" bs. I like the look and wanted those, but have read of issues with hitting the brake calipurs.
So I settled on the series 87 16x8 with 4.00" bs.
So this morning I call 4wheel parts to make sure they'll fit and see if they have them at the local store. The sales rep tells me no steel wheels will fit without spacers.
Now it seems like alot of people out there are running steelies without spacers. What am I missing here.
When he told me this, I feel like all the research I've done was just shot down in flames. I think I've read in some threads that they automatically tell you this for some reason, but for all steel wheels?
Someone please help me.

 

Just got off the phone with procomp. Found the the series 97 with 4" BS should work fine. He also said they had a series 87 made for toyotas with 3.75" BS.
Called 4wheel parts directly to the local store and found that I could get the 97's and they should work. Series 87s discontinued?
Do any of these people actually talk to each other?!?!?
Finding the right wheels for this beast seems to be just as much of a challenge as finding the right lift.

 

Well this is driving me to drink, lol.
So far I've talked with 3 different dealers including 4wheel parts and gotten 3 different stories as to what's available and what's not, what will work and what wont; and I'm only inquiring on the series 97 and series 87.

Got a different rep this time, and this time he said the series 97 wont work at all. The only wheel that will fit is the series 87 with 3.75" bs.
So apparently the reps at procomp don't even talk to each other.
Pardon me while I run outside and scream at the top of my lungs!

 

I had Pro Comp 97 Rockcrawler rims from 4WP on my 00 2nd gen (given they were 15s now) and did not need wheel spacers. Seem to remember that 4.25" BS was too much and that 4" BS was better.

I deal with the 4WP store in Charlotte, NC. Talk to KYLE if he is still there. He is a Toyota guy and knows his stuff. Calling a 1-800 hotline is usually you are talking to someone looking something up in a book, like many of the "monkeys" behind the counter in part stores. Yes, there are excellent ones, but they are the exception I've found.

If I were you, MEASURE the BS on the wheel on there now and get something very close to that.

Also please watch the f bomb inferrences, those are a and against the rules.

dont waist your time with spacers they throw off your wheel balance and they are a waist of money

 

Sorry, but that is an incorrect blanket statement. Perhaps that has been your experience, but I have run wheel spacers on numerous on/off road Toyotas with no balancing or alignment problems...if installed correctly.

I wanted to go with wheels rather than spacers because I felt spacers added another point at which things could go wrong.

If you get the right spacers, hub centric, they should work fine from everything I've read. I weighed the cost vs. benefit of spacers and wheels and decided on wheels; but that's just me.

I had the parts manager where I work get a hold of the procomp guy they use to put wheels on the new trucks in the lot. (Why I did'nt think of this in the first place I don't know)
Found that I can get the series 98's in 16x8, 4" backspacing and they should fit. We did'nt hear back from him until yesterday, so monday I'll be ordering them up. Should take about a week to get. He said he had to drill out the lug pattern?
Well, I'll post pics when they show up if they fit.

 

My 1/4" spacers are fine and they're cheap chinese spacers that don't fit right.

 

Well, here I am, just over a month later and still no wheels.
The procomp guy my parts manager ordered the wheels from won't give us an answer as to why they aren't here yet; He originally said 3 to 4 days.
I never got a reply from procomp asking them to sort out the different opinions I got from their reps.
So much for customer service.
I just pulled the trigger on a set of these from wheelers offroad and called my parts manager and told him to cancel on the procomps.

 

You could check summitracing.com for the wheels you are looking for. they might have them.

 

Yeah, I checked summit and could not find anything with 4inch backspacing in either procomp or crager. I could custom order some cragers with that backspacing, but would run more than 100/wheel.
I got the wheels above for 78/each, black lug nuts for 1.25 each and black center caps at 4.99 each.

 

Hum. You could check a different supplier that you were originally going for.

Or you could swing by your local tire shop and see what they can do for you..

I already ordered these wheels, so just waiting on them to ship now.

 

I know this is a bit late but I wanted to correct this statement. I am looking at Crager wheels and found them on Summit with 4" BS. Actually, you can search/filter on specific fitments options (i.e. bolt pattern + backspacing + rim size etc.).
