BFG cracking question

Has anyone had problems with cracking on the BFG MT T/A 31X10.5X15.
A friend has them on his Taco. On all 4 tires they are cracked at the base of the larger side lugs.
Thank-you
Gonzo

if you abuse the tires, they will crack, or parking them too long... i have several cuts and chunks missing in mine due to abuse

The truck is driven daily. It gets light off-roading. Just seems odd that they would be cracked like they are.

THat is odd. They should not crack like you describe, unless run on the highway very underinflated or something like that. Are you sure you'e seeing cracks, or just mold lines? Are the cracks running around the tire, like the tread cap is coming off, or it is weather checking due to age and sun? Are they retreads by any chance? Pics would help.

No they are not recaps. About 2 years old. Not half worn yet. The cracks run along the front bottom edge of the larger tread lug that sticks out towards the sidewall past the others. I'll try to get pics. And they are not cuts. Odd that if it were cuts that it would be beside just those lugs.

Since you live in the northeast, the cold has an effect on tires if the truck sits for some time in the cold. Also sunlight deteriates tires as well.

Cool

That happened to the set of BFG's that were on my truck when I bought it. I took it to Discount Tire and they gave me a really good deal on a new set of BFG's. My new ones are almost 3 years old with 20,000 miles on them... no cracks yet!

Another thing - there was a recall on certain BFGs, seems like it was MTs made in the last few years. You might check that out. I would suggest taking them to a BFG dealer anyway - they 'may' help out. The guy doesn't even need a receipt - the date of manufacture is molded into the tire.

hmm..oohh reallly! I went wheeling a couple weeks ago and last night i noticed some slices in the sidewalls and some chunking starting on the side lugs. This disappoints me  but what do i expect when i wheel...MEH. Anyways my next tire will be the nitto terragrapplers or destination mts. I guess everyone was right(not that i was doubting them) that the MTR has a much stronger sidewall than the BFG. Im gonna look into that recall.

EDIT: just called them...only if you purchased your tire after april 2004. The only bfgs that are included are the BFG AT Ko and the Krawlers
